We'll be replacing Q, Mack, Savion, Thompson, Buggs and maybe Jennings. I'm concerned our struggles in the secondary may only get worse and Q was our entire defensive line this year.

Something about the replacing process of players and coaches feels different this year. Please someone make me feel better.

At least our schedule will give them some time to adjust.

we did not get enough quality depth in the form of PT in our front 7 on D. Of course injuries did not help

Our back end D can not get worse - sorry, but I disagree. Diggs, Surtain, Carter, McKinney, Mayden...we good to go.

And then add a freshman ready to play...we will be better!

ILB will be about the same - unless Kaho steps in and picks up where he left off from special teams play!!

Our OLB play will be better assumiong everyone who is back is healthy!!!

I didn't even thing about Diggs coming back. Truth be known Savion got picked on a few times this year, and Mack Wilson should've had a better year. We really have to have some folks step up and give us some form of pass rush.

Need Moses to step up and guys to stay healthy and we should be good. We lost more leadership last year along with Pruitt.

I’m scared that our weak schedule isn’t preparing us enough. We played nobody all year until LSU and Miss St. We beat them, but the offense didn’t play great in those games. Then Georgia rolls around and Jalen has to save us. Then we all know what happened with Clemson. It was like anytime we faced a good defense, Tua panicked a little bc he hadn’t seen anything like it, and the offense as a whole really struggled. We had 29 points against LSU, 24 against Miss St, followed that up with 10 points at the half against The Citadel, then 21 points before Jalen came in against Georgia. Cap that off with 16 points against Clemson.

Our schedule this year is even worse the first half of the year. Just scared it won’t prepare us again

Agreed. I also wonder if the rat poison didn’t play a huge part. All season long all you heard was how great Bama was, how this was the best team ever, etc.

I'm not overly concerned about the secondary because we will bring back Surtain, Diggs, Carter and McKinney.

The inside linebackers worry me some, but hopefully someone will step up and be the next great one. As far as the OLBs, hopefully Lewis and Allen will be healthy and won't get hurt again. If that is the case, I think we will be fine there, even if Jennings leaves.

Defensive line is probably the most concerning, just because of the lack of experience. Hopefully some young guys will step up.

Great thing will be Bama should open at #2 and dont see a way from them to overtake CU all year. (Since #1 has never won CFB... that is not a bad thing)

I am hopeful that the coaches (whomever they may happen to be in '19) will try to rotate the starters and work on depth and experience for the back-ups. Seems like when Dunbar came he refused to work the backups (and the DL was gassed in the CU loss) and this year there didn't seem to be that much rotation either??? If the schedule allows, I am sure hopeful that the LB's and DLine get some much needed relief and built depth for down the road not to mention next year...
All the talk about Bo Davis, he seemed to always have 6-8 DLine guys who were mostly interchangeable.

I think Alfano, Dale, plus Barmore are going to be household names next season. Especially Alfano.

Secondary will be fine. It would have been nice to bring back Thompson, but he’s replaceable. It’s not like we lost Minkah or Barron.

It will be interesting to see how the inside backer position plays out.

I know this thread is about defense, but has anyone thought about the OL? It should be exceptional next year. Especially if we somehow get Stoutland back.

A friend of mine and I were talking Offense earlier, should be unstoppable. Rotating Harris and Sanders, Tua and obviously our NFL Caliber receiving core. My only real concern is TE and center.

I will probably get flamed for this but we all know it's always been Saban's defense no matter who the coaches are.
The thing that worries me is the fact that he hasn't made any updates or changes to his system this whole time. We've seen him try to evolve and adjust offensively over time but not defensively.
It seems that teams that have above average coaches and quarterbacks have lit us up the past few years. Our only answer for it has been to try to outscore them. I may be way off but is it time to make some changes to the defensive philosophy. Especially with our experience and depth issues at linebacker, I think we may need to use a system that doesn't require the middle linebacker to call the sets and make plays with the DL holding up their man.

Saban’s defenses are definitely a product of personnel rather than scheme.

We need some alphas who can get people in the correct alignments.

if we cannot get into correct alignment - lets make it simple and just man up - 99% of teams we face we would win on pure better athletes.

I love all of our guys and I hate to criticize them ever but Savion was not a starter. He was forced into a role because of Diggs injury. He was a liability against the good teams. We will be much better at corner next year with Diggs back and Surtain and Jobe with a year of college experience.
Mack is great but as many have mentioned he was playing out of position. He's more of a Will than a Mike. We knew that MLB would be a problem this year because of lack of depth. That was obvious when Kaho got on campus 4 weeks before the first game and was immediately in the 2 deep.
DL is our only place in concerned but we've been concerned there every single year and every single year somebody breaks out.
Hopefully we will be able to keep a good rotation at OLB/DE this year. Lack of pass rush late in games killed us against the better offenses we faced all year.
