Former Alabama defensive lineman Ozell Powell, a regular starter during the mid-1990s, was shot and killed Wednesday in his native Greenville, according to a Greenville Advocate report.

Powell, 40, was found with bullet wounds in his chest and abdomen and was pronounced dead at the L.V. Stabler Memorial Hospital, according to the report.

Eric Simmons, 22, was arrested early Thursday and charged with murder, according to the report. The investigation remains ongoing, as Greenville Police Department Lt. Justin Lovvorn told the Advocate other people of interest were being sought.

Powell, an all-state player at Greenville High, started 25 games at Alabama from 1993-96. He finished his career with 67 tackles and four sacks. He intercepted a pass and ran it back 22 yards in the Crimson Tide's 1996 SEC Championship loss to Florida.
