I disagree, the FG for the win was a smart decision with no time left. I've honestly never witnessed a short field goal run all the way back until that day so the odds were in our favor. Miss it, head to overtime, make it, party like it's 1985.

It was one of the worst decisions every made by anyone who qualifies as one of the greatest coaches ever.

Sure, at first it seems like a good idea. But as soon as you see Auburn putting a return team out there, unless you have a kick coverage team on the field, be able to audible to Bateman and tell him to just spike the ball or lay on the ground with it.

His excuse after the game also was lame. His argument was that he told them to be sure and cover the kick in case they returned it? When in their entire college careers were Kouandijo, Shepherd, et al. ever called upon to cover a kick and make a tackle...especially a game saving tackle? Why did those guys never, ever, play on punt coverage? Here's why. Watch guys like John Hannah, Jim Krapf, and Jeff Beard try to cover a punt against a REAL athlete. Thankfully, the NCAA soon changed the substitution rule and started allowing mass substitutions on any play (in 1971 teams could only substitute two players on any play...one of whom would be the punter on 4th down.)

And besides, it's not like it never happened before. Heck, it even happened in the SEC earlier in the same season.

I wonder if the "make their asses quit " mentality that Saban preaches all the time, has a negative effect on kickers.

So Saban reads the Bama Board:

quote:

"We definitely need to improve on special teams," Saban said. "But look, we have two capable specialists and I'm just going to tell everybody, y'all need to get a positive attitude about our punter and our kicker, aight? Because all of your negative thoughts and all your, I hate to say it, I'm not going to say it. You know what I want to say. It starts with a B, the second word, with an S, about what you say about these guys really affects them in a negative way. It really affects them in a serious way."

I'm pretty sure, that at some point in their HS football career, these guys played on special teams. So it's not like they didn't understand what was being asked of them by Coach Saban.

Eta- yes I know you said "college careers"..but not much difference, if any, between the 2 from a fundamental standpoint.

There's a better chance of rainbows coming out of my arse than for me to have a positive attitude about our kicker.

We should just sign a kicker every year until we prove we have a decent one. Maybe if there were four to five options at any given time, just one will survive Bobby Williams' coaching.

That's just part of the whole lame BS excuse. There's a helluva lot of difference between Cyrus Kouandijo "understanding" what's being asked of him and actually being able to execute. No doubt Kouandijo was capable of "understanding" how to run a post route. So why didn't we ever throw him the ball? Bottom line...you want to make sure a kick isn't returned, you have coverage guys in the game. Or else you don't kick it.

You guys are ridiculous.

He knows he needs to improve etc. And I'm all aboard the fire Bobby Williams train.

But I have to wonder if you guys remember all the Leigh Tiffin years. Because I can remember a certain game where I flat out ready to kill the kid.

Bitching about a guy that's doing his best is stupid. He hasn't exactly been in the best situation with the bad back either.

I agree...the momentum was with Auburn and with the way Foster was kicking, I didn't like our chances in overtime...hindsight's always 100% but, at the time, me and my son were yellin' for Saban to kick it...

my question is, has it become mental? much like a good jump shooter that cant hit a free throw. i'm thinking its that or hes just afraid to cut loose for fear of reinjuring his back. regardless of why, the outcome is the same. i wonder if janakowski from the raiders were allowed to kick for bama, would he lose it also? seriously? its getting that bad.

Good question...wish I knew the answer. I'm wondering if it may be due to technique. If it was mental, I would think he'd be shanking his kicks badly or line driving 'em...on his 2 misses Saturday, seems like he hit 'em solid as they were plenty long and plenty high, just not quite accurate. I don't know a thing 'bout kicking, but I wonder if maybe a change to how he sets up or how he approaches the ball might help his accuracy...

He's still verbally committed...but he agreed to not enroll until January so he'd have all 4 years of eligibility. UGA has since offered him but he says that, for now, he's still solid to Bama...

Right. I'm not sure why everyone doesn't know this by now.

Dude has a Pars Defect. It's a permanent back injury caused by repetitive motion. It's not like the kid straight sucks, it just feels like someone is stabbing him in the back every time he kicks.

It seems like Saban should have recruited another kicker last year, but I hesitate to ever think that any of us ever have better ideas about what needs to happen than Saban does.

Bobbeh don't coach Kickers and Punters, there's not someone who does either.

They see their personal coaches in the offseason and that's generally it...

I feel for him, but if it's making him unable to produce then we need a different kicker.
