Top Ohio State recruiting targets: 9 names to know

9. Micah Parsons • Defensive end • Harrisburg, Pa. • Harrisburg

A former Penn State commit, Parsons has been pro-Ohio State for a long time, thanks to his relationship with defensive line coach Larry Johnson Sr. Though Parsons would prefer to play in a 3-4 defense, the Buckeyes remain one of his top choices. The 5-star prospect and No. 5 overall recruit in the Class of 2018 is expected to decide near National Signing Day on Feb. 7. He made an official visit to Ohio State on Sept. 9.

8. Tommy Togiai • Defensive tackle • Pocatello, Idaho • Highland

Togiai may be the Buckeyes’ top remaining defensive tackle prospect after a three-day visit to Columbus in June. He’s coming off his official visit to Ohio State, and Ohio State has put itself in a good position to land the nation’s ninth-ranked DT. He will make trips to USC and Washington, at least.

7. Rasheed Walker • Tackle • Waldorf, Md. • North Point

With the pickup of Pope last week, a new name makes its way into our top 10 and it’s Rasheed Walker. The country’s 11th-ranked tackle has remained a target for Ohio State the last few months, though 100 percent of his 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions have him headed to Penn State. Despite the odds, it’s never wise to count out Johnson when he’s recruiting in Maryland.

6. Anthony Cook • Defensive back • Houston • Lamar

Cook potentially could be swapped out with Tyson Campbell. But I’m going with the Houston 5-star defensive back because he’s been into the Buckeyes for so long. Ohio State will have a to-the-wire fight with the Texas Longhorns and LSU Tigers to land the No. 2-ranked cornerback in the class, but an official visit last Saturday could be the thing to put it ahead for good.

5. Jayson Oweh • Defensive end • Blairstown, N.J. • Blair Academy

For a player who no one had heard of in January, it’s remarkable to consider the spot Oweh is in now. The 6-foot-6, 240-pound defensive end has skyrocketed up the Ohio State recruiting board and is one of the highest-priority players remaining. Penn State and Notre Dame are involved, but a Jan. 4 decision is likely to come down to the Buckeyes and Nittany Lions. Oweh was one of a handful of players who made an official visit to Ohio State on Sept. 9.

4. Nicholas Petit-Frere • Tackle • Tampa, Fla. • Berkeley Prep

Ohio State will hope to add at least two more tackles, and Petit-Frere is one of the names they have high on their recruiting board. It’s always tough to land Florida’s best talents, but an inviting depth chart in Columbus could help the Buckeyes here. The Tampa product is ranked as the No. 1 offensive tackle in the country. Petit-Frere moves up the list this week as the need for two more offensive tackles in the Class of 2018 is apparent.

3. Tyreke Smith • Defensive end • Cleveland Heights, Ohio • Cleveland Heights

Another Ohio prospect who has the Buckeyes in a battle. A former basketball player from California, Smith has shot up nationally. He’s proved himself time after time this spring and summer at recruiting combines against the best of the best. This is a must-get for the Buckeyes and, once again, they’re fighting Penn State, Notre Dame and others for his commitment. Smith will make his commitment at the Under Armour All-America Game on Jan. 4.

2. Kamryn Babb • Wide receiver • St. Louis • Christian Brothers College

Like Austin Mack in 2016 and Trevon Grimes in 2017, Babb has been the top wideout on Ohio State’s board for much of the 2018 recruiting cycle. There’s no reason for that to change anytime soon. Babb is a smooth route runner who catches everything thrown his way. The Buckeyes are in a good position to land him, but until he makes his announcement, expect LSU, Michigan, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and others to keep trying to sway the country’s No. 6 wide receiver.

Unfortunately, Babb tore his ACL in his right knee and is expected to miss his senior season.

1. Jackson Carman • Tackle • Fairfield, Ohio • Fairfield

A must-get for Ohio State from nearby Fairfield, Carman has had Buckeyes fans sweating since announcing that Clemson was his top school following a spring visit to South Carolina. The Buckeyes have worked overtime on Carman to keep him home, but Southern California also has made its way into the conversation. A decision is expected around December, and Carman is going to keep everyone guessing until then. This one is getting interesting as Carman has been a vocal dissenter about the Buckeyes’ offensive struggles, and some wonder if he’s leaning elsewhere.

4-star RB Harold Joiner, Mountain Brook (Birmingham, Ala.)

Harold Joiner previously listed Michigan State as his favorite, but that had more to do with the dearth of running backs on its depth chart than his relationship with the program. Should he get to campus for his official visit over the weekend — amid conflicting messages about his plans — that could change. However, he has SEC powers such as LSU, Auburn and Alabama pushing for him as well.

5 top uncommitted Michigan recruiting targets

TE Mustapha Muhammad, 4 stars, Missouri City (Texas)

The Wolverines did not sign a tight end in 2017 and also lost Devin Asiasi to UCLA as a transfer. Luke Schoonmaker, a 3-star tight end, was an important get last week for Jim Harbaugh and staff. But Muhammad would be an even bigger commit, as he’s rated No. 5 nationally at his position by 247 Sports. A little after 1 a.m. ET on August 10, Muhammad included Michigan on a new top-5 list to celebrate his birthday. The Wolverines would like to get another tight end commit.

DT Tyler Friday, 4 stars, Ramsey (N.J.)

Michigan might be competing against in-state Rutgers for the 4-star defensive lineman. Rated as his state’s No. 2 recruit for 2018, Friday is still projected to land with the Wolverines and would be a huge pick up for DL coach Greg Mattison. But as Land of 10’s Kevin Goheen writes, a Michigan-Rutgers battle is definitely happening.

TE Luke Ford, 4 stars, Carterville (Ill.)

The former Arkansas commit has an impressive collection of offers, including Alabama, Texas and Georgia. But Steve Wiltfong of 247 Sports reports that Luke’s father considers the Wolverines as among the leaders for his son. Ford is ranked as the nation’s No. 2 tight end for 2018 and his No. 59 overall for all positions. Alabama is seen as the favorite.

OT Daniel Faalele, 3 stars, Bradenton (Fla.)

The IMG talent projected to start at left tackle has yet to play in a regulation football game. But the Australian has the size that intrigues college coaches. 247 Sports lists Faalele at 6-foot-8 and 400 pounds. Tennessee is viewed as the favorite.

DT Michael Thompson, 4 stars, St. Louis

Missouri is the clear favorite here, but Thompson was at the Wolverines’ BBQ at the Big House a couple weeks ago. Thompson is nearly 300 pounds and is Missouri’s No. 2 recruit for 2018. Last month, Thompson included Michigan with Missouri, Ohio State, Alabama and LSU in his top-5 list. Expect this to be a Missouri-Michigan battle.

My concern is he continues his bad off the field decisions that led to his departure from LSU.

I'm sure there's a caveat in his offer pertaining to weed.

I know Bama has one of the more lax policies in the SEC. Essentially don't get 3 strikes

A look at where some of the nation’s more high-profile recruits will be taking in games over the weekend.

No program is doing it bigger than Georgia this weekend as the No. 11 Bulldogs host No. 17 Mississippi State.

A pair of official visitors are currently slated in Top247 running back James Cook and five-star defensive end KJ Henry.

All the buzz says Cook will ultimately land in Athens while Kirby Smart and company aim to make a move for Henry who is also strongly considering Clemson and Alabama among others.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see the nation’s No. 1 recruit in five-star quarterback Justin Fields return for a second-straight week. Touted offensive guard Trey Hill says he plans to be there. Dawgs247 insider Rusty Mansell has more on the big weekend at UGA.

Georgia has the nation’s No. 14 recruiting class per 247Sports and many of those commits will be back in Athens as well.

While Florida State is a longshot to flip five-star offensive tackle from Brey Walker, the Seminoles will have a chance to sign their other two marquee visitors in Top247 linebacker Dax Hollifield and in-state defensive tackle Dennis Briggs. Hollifield has had the Seminoles among his favorites the entire process and Briggs has FSU running even with Miami at the top of his list.

“I look forward to seeing the Noles play,” Briggs told 247Sports. “It'll be my first time watching them play and watching a live game in Doak. Also looking forward to being with other top recruits and commits.”

Briggs added he’ll return in two weeks when Florida State hosts Miami.

247Sports’s No. 4 ranked all-purpose back and No. 1 ranked recruit in the nation’s capital in Top247 recruit Mychale Salahuddin has been committed to USC since June but he’s always had North Carolina among his top schools and he’ll be in Chapel Hill over the weekend.

“The overall game atmosphere, business school and overall coaches and team atmosphere,” Salahuddin said of what he looks forward to seeing in Chapel Hill.

Salahuddin added the Tar Heels still have a chance.

“Still 100 percent committed, still weighing my options though.”

Maryland is in the thick of it for Waldorf (Md.) North Point Top247 offensive tackle Rasheed Walker. In the end I think Ohio State could prove tough to beat but the Terrapins are doing everything right in this recruitment to keep the DMV standout home for school. Virginia Tech and Penn State are among the other contenders.

Baylor’s season hasn’t gone according to plan so far but on the recruiting trail Matt Rhule and company have put together one of the Big 12’s top recruiting classes. On Saturday the Bears will see two of their remaining top targets in Top247 quarterback Gerry Bohanon and Top247 receiver Tommy Bush. The 247Sports Crystal Ball favors Baylor for Bohanon and at one point it was heavy in their favor for Bush as well.

“Just seeing if they are growing as a team and how the offense is clicking,” Bush said of what he’s looking forward to seeing. “Already know about the coaches but have not seen them coach in a real game so I will finally get to see that.”

--

Undefeated Kentucky will look to snap a 30-game losing streak to Florida in front of many of their commits and top targets.

Purdue will also have many of their coveted recruits and commits in town including Top247 receiver and Texas commit Rondale Moore.

From TigerPaw:

quote:

KN dropped a pretty big insider today. Here's summary

- Gonna have to wait longer on 4* Buck Richard Jibunor. He won't be on campus next weekend (will be at Tennessee instead) but KN says AU still seems to be in best spot with TEN/UF next

- KN says it's possible AU backs off Fields at some point if they feel like they aren't making up any ground. Coaching staff is really excited with what Gatewood has done and might be comfortable to just take him. Fields is trending UGA (WTF)

- Chip Lindsey will attent Gatewood's game on the last week of October when AU has a bye. He will be facing a talented secondary that includes a 2019 UF commit in Trent Whittemore.

- 3* TE Tyneil Hopper is planning on visiting for AU/MSST next week. AU is still evaluating him

- KN says keep an eye on 3* La'Dedric Jackson. If AU misses on Tindall, Peterson and/or Walker AU might push for the MIZZ commit. Supposedly he's had a strong senior season

- AU continues to work on Saivon Smith (former LSU DB) and staff is working to get him to visit. A source of his says high chance AU gets him on campus soon. Also AU continues to talk with 4* Christian Tutt

- Former AU TE Landon Rice is probably going to sign with a Power 5 school next season

- KN believes the top 5 for 4* OT Badara Traore are Auburn, LSU, Oklahoma, Ole Miss and TExas. Ohio State could get in on it as well. AU plans to see one of Traore games but he plays on Saturdays so if they do it will be on Oct 28 when AU is off. Traore will probably not visit again before making a commitment

- Clemson has offered 4* WR Matthew Hill as a safety. AU feels good about him sticking for now

- 3* S Jamien Sherwood visited UF last week but AU still feels good about him sticking. He's planning on signing early

- Garner was 4* DT Coynis Miller's game last night and Miller had a really good game that included rushing for a TD. Still an AU/UF battle

- 3* RB Shaun Shivers plans on attending a few AU games specifically Ole miss or UGA along with Bama

- AU is apparently trending up with 3* TE Michael Parker. The concern is if Bama ever gives him a committable offer he will jump all over it. Because of that AU might only take him if he agrees to sign in December to avoid any late offers from Bama. Should be interesting to watch

Coaches on the road tonight:

- Tosh will be in the Carolinas to see Skyler DeLong and Zamir White.

- Ansley will be in Georgia watching Kyler McMichael.

- Burton Burns is staying in-state and attending Asa Martin's game.

That last one is a little interesting.

This is interesting too. Why send him there if you think that ship has sailed? His time would be more wisely spent elsewhere unless, of course, they think they've got a legit reason to stay on this kid. I bet they do.
