Harold Joiner‘s looming official visit

Harold Joiner is a bit of a football unicorn. He stands 6-foot-3, weighs 221 pounds, runs about a 4.3-second 40-yard dash … and plays running back.

Michigan State has sought out big running backs under coach Mark Dantonio. Its trio of Gerald Holmes, Madre London and LJ Scott all stand 6-1. Holmes and Scott both weigh around 230 pounds. But few players have the ability to be as imposing at the position as Joiner, the No. 5 running back in the 2018 class per the 247Sports composite.

But can Michigan State land the 4-star Mountain Brook (Birmingham, Ala.) senior? That remains to be seen. The chances don’t look particularly good after he took visits to Alabama and Clemson — both of which played in the last two national championship games — in the last two weeks.

But now the Spartans will have their shot. Some questions have arisen as to whether Joiner would take his official visit to Michigan State this weekend as he reportedly had planned over the summer. His coach said that still seems to be the plan.

“As far as I know, he is,” Mountain Brook coach Chris Yeager told Land of 10. “It’s my understanding that he is.”

It will be a massive opportunity for the Spartans to sway Joiner. Over the summer, he called Michigan State his top school, citing the wide-open depth chart. Should Scott leave for the NFL after this season, it would leave London as the only veteran running back, with current freshmen Weston Bridges and Connor Heyward behind him.

“I started to look at the depth charts,” Joiner told Land of 10’s Jeremy Birmingham at The Opening Finals, “and I looked at the linemen and stuff, and they have huge linemen, and they don’t have a lot of running backs right now.”

Joiner later said with a laugh that his only problem is the weather. On his visit, he’ll see a forecast high of 89 degrees Saturday in East Lansing when Michigan State takes on Notre Dame.

Michigan State certainly will keep pushing. On Wednesday during the bye week, running backs coach Dave Warner traveled to Mountain Brook to see Joiner, according to Yeager. The effort seemed to resonate with Joiner.

“Harold’s a relational guy,” Yeager said. “I think it’s one of the reasons he decided to come to Mountain Brook [as a sophomore]. The day he showed up, he just fit in.”

The Spartans will be hoping he finds that fit on his visit this weekend. A massive group of visitors will descend upon East Lansing on Saturday, but Joiner will be getting plenty of attention.

I think this author was a little generous with Joiner's 40 time.

Ohio recruiting rankings, Vol. 2: Listing the best prospects from the Buckeye State

quote:

No. 8 • 4-star WR Joseph Scates (6-3, 175), Dayton Dunbar — uncommitted

Joseph “JoJo” Scates may be the most physically talented wide receiver in the Midwest in the Class of 2018, but like Thomas, his teammate at Dunbar, Scates’ off-the-field issues impact his recruitment more than his abilities. A former Michigan State verbal, Scates has every tool in the toolbox to be a major college receiver.

That, of course, is if he can stay out of his own way. Alabama remains near the top of his list, but West Virginia holds the majority of his 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions. When he pulls it all together, Scates has the natural instincts to be a big-time player at the next level. He runs, he jumps, he catches nearly everything and he does it all with a smooth, almost easy knack for it. He’s this high in our rankings because his ceiling in the right system — one that develops him on and off the field — is very, very high.

Previous ranking: No. 6

Why he moved: Like Tavion Thomas, Scates physical talents remain unquestioned. He’s just simply not facing anyone that challenges him and it’s hard to know exactly how that translates to the next level. Combine those questions with academic concerns and other off-field issues, and you see major college teams slowing down in their recruiting of Scates.

Man I wish this kid didn't have his off the field issues. He's a monster on the field.

QB Tanner McKee

Destination: BYU

Reason: The four-star quarterback recently attended the BYU-Utah game and there’s absolutely no counting out the Cougars since McKee is LDS and will take a two-year mission after high school before enrolling in college. That will provide McKee and the school of his choice a lot of flexibility because it won’t limit those colleges from recruiting quarterbacks during the next two recruiting cycles. Throughout his recruitment, McKee has talked highly of BYU and that offense could clearly use all the help it could get. If the Cougars do land McKee, they’re getting one of the top quarterbacks in this class and stealing him from some high-profile programs. UCLA, Alabama, Washington, Stanford and Texas are some other schools that will receive visits coming up so there’s a lot of competition for McKee – and a long way to go in his recruitment.

4-star Louisiana ATH Slade Bolden locked in with Alabama

quote:

The Latest: Versatile West Monroe, La. athlete Slade Bolden surprised some when he committed to Alabama over TCU and LSU over the summer but now that he's a couple of months into his commitment, he has nothing but good things to say about his decision. Rivals.com recently caught up with Bolden to talk about his season so far, get his thoughts on the Tide's new offensive coordinator as well as his plans for visits going forward.

In His Words: "It's been a relief since I committed. I finally found the right place for me and I'm just glad it's over with. I didn't rush anything. I wanted to make sure it was right and I'm excited. I know there's going to be a target on my back being an Alabama commit but it doesn't matter."

On why he knew Alabama was right for him: "I just know I would really click in their offense. I really like the coaches, the whole coaching staff. Obviously I enjoyed the facilities and the atmosphere and the whole vibe over there. Everybody there expects your best and I like to go out and compete at the highest level. I felt like the offensive coordinator was happy when I committed and I felt like we had a good bond and I feel like he wants a guy that can play a little slot and be like the guys he's had in the past at New England."

On his fit in the Tide offense: Coach Saban told me clearly that I'm still coming down as an athlete, if I need to play running back, outside, or even play defense you can. But I feel like Coach Daboll wants to see me in that slot position ... We sat down and watched film on what he's planning on doing with me and I feel like it's a great thing for me as a slot guy."

On playing defensive back for his high school team:
"I just kind of watch the quarterbacks eyes and react. Playing quarterback myself I can really take a lot away from what they do. If they take three steps I know they're going deep and if they take one it's going to be quick."

On potentially taking other visits: "I haven't had many schools talk to me. TCU every now and then. I'm not looking at other schools. I might go to a Louisiana Tech game or something just to go watch some college football but I'm not going to try to go chasing after other schools. Once I'm committed I'm committed."

On his official visit plan: "I haven't booked anything yet but I plan on taking it the weekend they play LSU."

Rivals Reaction:
Bolden is taking an old fashioned approach to the recruiting process saying that he considers his commitment much like a marriage and he has no plans of stepping out on Alabama. His versatile skillset is why Alabama liked him so much and he's doing a nice job of showcasing it so far this season.

Arizona was the first school to receive an official visit from star defensive end Andres Fox
out of Mobile (Ala.) Mobile Christian.

The 6-foot-4, 241 pound senior was at Arizona the weekend of September 2nd and he saw the Wildcats beat Northern Arizona 62-24.

Arizona has been recruiting Fox since his 10th grade year. When the Wildcats got involved with Troy Young
(2017 Arizona signee), they saw Fox for the first time. That is when the connection between Fox and Arizona began.

They used Young as much as they could while Fox was on campus and they hope that relationship helps them in the end.

"It was cool to spend time with Troy and he told me what it is like out there," said Fox. "We talked a good bit, I got to see him play and we went out to dinner.

"I did not get too much time with him because of the game and all that, but him being there was great. It helped me be comfortable and him being there does help them. It would make it easier for me to go out there knowing that I have a friend already there."

As soon as the visit started, the Wildcats made Fox smile. When he got to his rook after checking in, he saw a cake with his name on it and that stood out to him.

Things seemed to go well after that too.

"They had it all set up for me from the beginning. I got the campus tour, I saw everything, I met with a lot of the coaches and it was a good time.

"What stood out to me the most was how it was different from the south. The scenery was great and I really liked it out there. I saw the dessert, all the cactuses and things like that.

"It was just different from what I am used to and I liked it."

It is not hard for anyone to recognize the size of Fox. That can be seen by anyone and the Wildcat coaches want players with his body on their team.

"All of the coaches were telling me that they want bigger bodies and that they like my size a lot," said Fox. "I watched some film of the Northern Arizona game and we went over some things.

"The main coaches I talk to from Arizona are coach [Marcel] Yates (defensive coordinator/linebackers) and coach [Calvin] Magee (offensive coordinator/running backs) and they are good guys . We spent some time together and they are cool.

"The think I am a defensive end if I keep growing, but they said I could play STUD in their scheme too, if I stayed at linebacker. They just want to get bigger."

Not only does Arizona want guys with the size of Fox, but they want to put more names on their roster from the same part of the country he lives in.

"They want to bring guys from the south to Arizona. They talk about getting more guys from Alabama and from the south in the future. They like the size and speed from down here I guess."

Arizona is up against Alabama, Auburn, LSU and Stanford, so it will not be easy for the Wildcats to win out, but they made a strong impression on the No. 10-ranked prospect in Alabama.

"Overall, the visit was pretty fun," said Fox. "The visit really met my expectations. I had fun watching the game, seeing them play and I like their scheme. They play fast and it was a lot of fun to watch.

"They set the bar high and I had a good time. They want to start a legacy there with players from the south coming their way. That was their message to me."

Fox plans to take all five official visits before he makes his decision.

If you don't know the name Dazalin Worsham
already — learn it.

The 6-foot-1, 160 pound sophomore wide receiver out of Trussville (Ala.) Hewitt-Trussville is smooth. He is on track to not only be one of the top prospects in his state, but one of the best in the South for 2020.

His recruitment has really taken off. Between the end of freshman year and the start of his sophomore year, a dozen schools offered him.

It all happened a little faster than he expected.

"I am up to 13 offers and it feels great," said Worsham. "Once it got started, it went quick and the offers came in one after another. It is what I was waiting on. I did not know it would happen this quick, but it has been exciting."

Jackson State got it all started. Ole Miss was the first Power 5 offer on June 5th. The offers rolled in from that point. Duke, Maryland, NC State, Oregon and South Carolina offers came in.

Then Worsham closed out the summer with offers from Auburn, Florida and Georgia in a two day span. He camped at all three in just over 24 hours, and he showed enough to earn the offers.

Each SEC school impressed him with something.

"I started with Florida and it was my first time there," said Worsham. "I liked everything that I saw there. The atmosphere was great and I got great feedback from the coaches.

"Coach [Jim] McElwain and coach [Kerry] Dixon (wide receivers) talked with me while I was there and they really liked me. Me and coach Dixon have developed a good relationship now and I really like him.

"The visit was great for me. I got to meet the coaches, see what it was like down there and I really liked it a lot."

From Gainesville (Fla.), the man with the hair headed north to Athens (Ga.). He would leave his first visit to Georgia with an offer from the Bulldogs.

"I worked a lot with coach [James] Coley (wide receivers) and he is great. He has a lot of energy, he is fun to work with and I liked him a lot.

"Other than coach Coley, Georgia's facilities really stood out to me. The facilities there are top notch and it is a school I like."

Worsham headed back to his home state after spending a few hours at Georgia. It was his first time on the Auburn campus next and when his visit there ended, he was all smiles.

"I always grew up thinking about the Alabama-Auburn rivalry, so to get the offer was pretty big for me," said Worsham. "I like their offense, the campus is nice, Auburn being a home-state school made it pretty big.

"My coach [Josh Floyd] having a strong relationship with coach [Gus] Malzahn made it even more special too. They have known each other for a long time from their days in Arkansas, so it is cool to have the Auburn offer."

The 2020 wideout is still "pretty open", but a handful of schools do stand out early. Worsham listed Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Georgia and LSU as those schools.

He has already visited Alabama and Auburn for games this season. He will be at Clemson this weekend.

More offers will come his way and his name will spread nationally. It will only push him to be that much better.

"It motivates me really," said Worsham. "I always work, but I will work even harder to be on top. All those guys in front of me will keep me working. I want to be No. 1."

Interesting quote from Emil Ekiyor regarding our sales pitch to him:

quote:

“They have a void at center right now and need someone to come in next year and compete for the spot,” Ekiyor said. “Center is one of their biggest needs on their team and I can come in and compete for it.”

Hunter Brannon was recruited to play Center and Jarrett Bell says he is being recruited to play Center as well.

Still a void with the two deep gone after 2017. Bozeman and Hassenauer both being seniors.

I do see Brannon strictly as a center. Bell looks like he could play all three interior spots.

It's almost 7pm so I'm going off topic with a dog update
The puppy is just over 7 months and 107lbs eats 1 can of food and 7 1/2 cups of dry food a day
The shocker is the blue heeler is 68lbs. The vet said he could lose 5, but he's just a big heeler. I'm going broke over here

Speaking of off topic, do any of you Prattville baws know any contractors that are trustworthy and not looking to fleece people?

We are wanting to do a few renovations in our new house down there.

I know one although he's not in Prattville. He works all over the area. He's a damn good builder and as honest as you'll find. He's not cheapest but his work is great. He did a $160 grand remodel on my home 6 or 7 years ago.

We aren't looking for total renovations thank God, but we would like to do a few small projects.

We're thinking about knocking out a wall to make the house more open, but we don't know if the wall in question is load bearing. It doesn't appear to be at first glance, but you never know.

I'd also like to add a closet to the bonus room to qualify it as a bedroom.
