Sounds like Savion Smith could publicly commit soon. No date, but it sounds like it could be coming soon, per Rodney Orr.

One of the Michigan State mods CB'd Harold Joiner to LSU. Joiner is supposed to be taking an OV to Michigan State this weekend FWIW.

Miami safety coach Ephraim Banda, cornerback coach Mike Rumph and director of player personnel Matt Doherty got a little creative on Thursday night.

With Top100 safety Josh Jobe back in South Florida for a funeral the three staff members took advantage of a new NCAA recruiting rule which allows for them to meet with a prospective student athlete off campus as long as it's within a mile of the school.

Per the NCAA handbook:

13.7.4 Off-Campus Contact Within One Mile of Campus Boundaries. Off-campus contact between an institutional staff member and a prospective student-athlete (and those accompanying the prospective student-athlete) and off-campus contact between an enrolled student-athlete and a prospective student-athlete (and those accompanying the prospective student-athlete) may occur during an unofficial visit within one mile of campus boundaries.

Banda, Rumph and Doherty all ate dinner with Jobe at a restaurant in Coral Gables. They were joined at the table by Top247 defensive back commit Gilbert Frierson and three-star cornerback commit D.J. Ivey.

While Jobe continues to play up both Michigan and Alabama on social media, InsideTheU continues to hear that he tells the Hurricanes all the right things behind the scenes. The same can be said about Frierson, who continues to have his name linked to Georgia as a potential flip destination.

Jobe (6-1, 180) is spending his senior season up at Cheshire Academy in Connecticut. He will then play at the U.S. Army All-American Game in January before enrolling early at the school of his choice.

It was hard to wipe the smile off the face of sophomore defensive lineman Jacorrian Wrenn.

Forget about the sack and Jackson-Olin's suffocating defense that shut down John Carroll, because all he wanted to talk about was the first touchdown of his high school career.

Wrenn scored on a 3-yard run with 5:01 to go, providing an exclamation point as Jackson-Olin (3-1, 1-1) pulled away for a 42-7 victory over John Carroll (2-2, 1-2) in Class 6A, Region 5 action tonight.

“I really don’t know how to describe it,” Wreen said. “I know I won’t forget it with it being my first high school touchdown. Sacks are great and all, but a touchdown. That’s just a great feeling. I didn’t know I was going to get the chance. We’ve practiced it, then Coach called my number. It was awesome.”

The Mustangs overcame the loss of quarterback Brandon Ward, who had to be taken off the field on a stretcher on the next-to-last play of the first half with the Mustangs leading 14-7.

“I think he’ll be fine,” Jackson-Olin coach Tim Vakakes said. “He was alert, talking and moving around. His head was hurting so we just needed to exercise every possible precaution.”

Bralen Johnson, the starter the past two seasons but moved to wide receiver and defensive back, took over at quarterback second half and led the Mustangs to 28 points.

Alvin Toney was a thorn in the Cavs’ sides all night. He caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from Ward to give J-O a 14-7 lead midway through the second quarter. He finished with three catches for 69 yards, two rushes for 34 yards and had a 64-yard punt return for a touchdown called back on a penalty as well as a 40-yard return to the John Carroll 3 called back as well.

Jackson-Olin ran the ball 46 times and attempted only seven passes, including one in the second half.

Star of the game: Johnson did a good job stepping in for Ward. He engineered four scoring drives in the second half, scoring on a 6-yard run.

Play of the Game: With the score tied at 7-all, the Mustangs had held the ball for almost six minutes, but faced a fourth-and-three at the John Carroll 29. Ward found Toney for the 29-yard touchdown and it was all Mustangs after that.

Key sequence: The J-O defense set the tone, and dominated in the third quarter by holding the Cavs without a first down and to minus-4 yards on three series while increasing its lead from 14-7 to 28-7.

Stat sheet: Big defensive tackle Coynis Miller added to his offensive totals with a 6-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and finished with five yards on three carries. … J-Garrious Hunter led the Mustangs with 90 yards on only seven carries, including a 47-yard touchdown in the first quarter and a 35-yard touchdown run called back on a penalty. … Deandre Carlton was next for the Mustangs with 55 yards on 16 carries, including a 28-yard touchdown run. … Ward finished 5-of-6 passing in the first half for 83 yards. … Johnson chipped in 52 yards on 10 carries, all in the second half. … John Carroll managed only 223 total yards, and 107 of those came on three plays.

By the numbers: 2, John Carroll opened the season 2-0 for the first time since 2011; 5, the Mustangs threw five interceptions in last week’s 28-6 loss to Homewood; 20, the Cavs snapped a 20-game losing streak (including 2 forfeits) by knocking off Hayden 27-12 in the opener; 10, Jackson-Olin was ranked No. 10 in the Week 2 poll, its first ranking in 22 years since a No. 10 ranking in the final poll of the 1997 season/

Coachspeak: “We played so ugly in the first half. We’re still really undisciplined. We’re making silly mistakes – penalties, turnovers. We can’t keep making those kinds of mistakes. I thought our defense was outstanding. We put them in some tough spots in the first half with short fields, then they really dominated in the second half,” – Vakakes

He said it …: “We made a lot of mistakes out there, but we were able to win the game. I thought I played okay, but we’re a team. I’m not going to say I was disappointed on the punt returns because everything we do is as a team. We just have to work on some things and get better.” – Toney

Next week: John Carroll travels to Moody, while while Jackson-Olin plays host to Calera.

LSU has laid the foundation for a top-10 recruiting class in 2018. Over the next few months, the coaching staff will attempt to add a couple of pieces that would put this collection of talent into “elite” territory.

The Tigers’ 2018 recruiting class, which is up to 19 commitments, has room for upward of nine additions.

Each Friday, SEC Country will review the week that was in LSU recruiting. That includes an overview of the current commitments, the top remaining targets on the board and what could be in store next for the Tigers.

Top uncommitted targets

- Terrace Marshall Jr., 5-star WR (Bossier City, La.): A new-look top 5 hasn’t hurt LSU’s chances with the nation’s top wide receiver. LSU, Texas A&M and Texas kept their spots, while Alabama and Florida State joined the fray. Marshall made a second unofficial visit to LSU in as many months before the dead period in July and again brought his entire family. Marshall is high on his relationship with the LSU coaching staff but said it will come down to how the Tigers’ offense looks. LSU is sure to get one of his five official visits. A decision will come on Dec. 22.

- Patrick Surtain Jr., 5-star CB (Plantation, Fla.): The nation’s No. 1 cornerback released a final 6 of LSU, Florida State, Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and Florida. Surtain’s most recent visit to LSU with his parents came in July. They toured the campus and got an up-close look at the academic offerings. Surtain also spent quality time with LSU players, most notably Donte Jackson and Kevin Toliver II. Surtain has named LSU as his leading school, but a commitment won’t come until later in the fall or closer to National Signing Day in February. He is the top defensive target on LSU’s board.

- Anthony Cook, 5-star CB (Houston): LSU holds commitments from only two defensive backs in the 2018 class and is pushing hard for Surtain to be the final piece. But that has not stopped defensive backs coach Corey Raymond from dialing up the pressure on Cook. Cook was high on LSU after making a visit for the Tigers’ spring game, and he has been in touch with LSU every day since. Cook included LSU in his final 3 along with Ohio State and Texas. Cook will make an official visit to Baton Rouge on Oct. 14 before an Oct. 30 commitment date.

- Justin Rogers, 4-star QB (Bossier City, La.): Louisiana’s No. 1 quarterback committed to TCU on May 31, but that has not deterred LSU coaches from continuing the press for Rogers. While Rogers is entrenched with the Horned Frogs, he is keeping an open mind toward the Tigers and their new-look offense. Rogers is an early enrollee, so if LSU gets back in the race, it would need to impress the dual-threat prospect quickly. LSU is unlikely to take a quarterback in its 2018 class that isn’t named Justin Rogers.

- Harold Joiner, 4-star RB (Birmingham, Ala.): After jumping out to an early lead and then being excluded from Joiner’s top 6, LSU again finds itself in a strong position to land his commitment. The 4-star tailback cooled on the Tigers after they procured commitments from three running backs at the end of June, but Tommie Robinson has worked hard to repair the relationship and put LSU in a strong position to add Joiner this fall. Joiner will officially visit LSU on Oct. 14 and UCLA the following week. Alabama has made a stronger push for the in-state tailback after missing on Asa Martin. Nonetheless, LSU remains the favorite.

- Luke Ford, 4-star TE (Carterville, Ill.): Ford made a visit to Baton Rouge on the final day of the team’s elite high school camp in June. While Ford has named Alabama as his leading school, he indicated LSU was bunched into that second group he is considering. Ford left his LSU visit impressed with the atmosphere and the coaching staff. LSU is likely behind schools such as Alabama and Georgia in the race for Ford.

- Ja’Marr Chase, 4-star WR (New Orleans): Chase made a surprising decision to commit to Florida after attending Friday Night Lights in July, but LSU has refused to turn down its efforts for the in-state wide receiver. Chase made his way to Baton Rouge for the home opener against Chattanooga. There is confidence on the LSU side that it can get Chase in this class, though the 4-star prospect seems to be leaning toward his out-of-state options.

- Michael Thompson, 4-star DL (St. Louis): Thompson included LSU in his final 5 schools after making a visit to campus for junior day in the spring. Thompson and his mother received the red-carpet treatment from coach Ed Orgeron, which made a strong impression on the blue-chip defensive tackle. Thompson is beginning to make more visits with fall now here, and an official visit to LSU should be in the cards this season. Missouri is considered the favorite to land the in-state prospect, but LSU may be the top option if he chooses to head out of state.

- Devonta Jason, 4-star WR (New Orleans): Jason has been committed to Kansas since February, but a final decision won’t come until December before he graduates and enrolls early at the university of his choosing. The elite in-state receiver recently visited LSU and enjoyed a sit-down meeting with Orgeron and wide receivers coach Mickey Joseph. LSU has been working hard behind the scenes to get Jason back on campus and will likely host him for a number of games this fall. If the Tigers’ offense impresses, they stand in a strong position.

- Lawrence Keys III, 4-star WR (New Orleans): Keys has named LSU as his leading school and could be close to making a decision. He made an unofficial visit to Baton Rouge in the week leading up to the August dead period and received a better blueprint how he would fit into the LSU offense. Next up for Keys is getting onto campus along with his mother, who is playing an integral role in helping her son make an informed decision. Don’t be surprised if Keys pops to LSU after making an official visit in the fall.

- Badara Traore, 4-star OL (JUCO): The No. 1 junior college offensive tackle remains a priority for offensive line coach Jeff Grimes and the Tigers’ coaching staff as they look to fortify the offensive line once K.J. Malone graduates after the 2017 season. Traore has made one official visit — to Auburn — but a stop in Baton Rouge is expected. Grimes has forged a good relationship with Traore, who could be in line for immediate playing time if he chooses LSU. He is early in the recruiting process, so things are open at this point.

- Glenn Beal, 3-star TE (New Orleans): Beal nearly popped to LSU on several occasions dating back to last summer when he picked up his offer. As his recruitment has taken off, he has relied on patience while going through the process. Beal camped at LSU twice in June, then made stops at Alabama, Mississippi State and Arkansas in July. UCLA and Ole Miss are his other top teams, but the Tigers have remained his leading school. Beal plans to wait to make a decision until National Signing Day.

- Andres Fox, 3-star EDGE (Mobile, Ala.): LSU cracked Fox’s top 4 schools in July before he conceded that Auburn and Alabama were a notch above the Tigers. Fox made visits to Auburn and Alabama in July and also squeezed in stops to Stanford and LSU. But he opted to delay announcing his commitment, which originally was scheduled for before his senior season. Fox has a private leader and it could very well be LSU. Fox could commit early in the fall or elect to let things play out. He is one of the final front-seven pieces that LSU is looking to add.

Jacob Copeland and Emil Ekiyor returning to Alabama

Jacob Copeland committed to Florida back in August, but the elite wide receiver will now skip out on visiting Gainesville for the second time this season in favor of visiting Tuscaloosa.

Copeland, a 4-star prospect from Escambia High School (Pensacola, Fla.), visited Alabama for the Crimson Tide’s game against Colorado State last weekend. He chose to visit Tuscaloosa for that game instead of visiting Gainesville for Florida’s rivalry game against Tennessee. He announced on Twitter that he’ll return to Alabama for the team’s game against Ole Miss next weekend instead of visiting Florida for its game against Vanderbilt.

That’s now consecutive visits for one of Alabama’s top slot targets if he follows through with his intentions to return to Tuscaloosa. He spoke with SEC Country earlier this week about his surprise trip to Alabama.

“Always gotta leave your options open,” Copeland said. “You never know what could happen at any given moment.”

What does that exactly mean? Well, he has some concerns with how Florida’s offense has looked so far in its first two games. He mentioned how the Gators have struggled to score and described the quarterback play as being “wishy-washy.”

“All I can do is wait out the season and go from there,” Copeland said. “I committed to UF because they were there first and stayed with me. But, at the same time, I got to do what’s best for me at the end of the day. I haven’t lost interest in ‘Bama. That’s why I made my way down [there].”

The Crimson Tide finished second for Copeland when he committed. If Florida continues to struggle on offense, this recruitment could be one to watch closely over the next several months. As of now, I still think he’ll stick with Florida.

Another important visitor set to return to Tuscaloosa is 4-star offensive guard Emil Ekiyor. Ekiyor, whose trip to Tuscaloosa next weekend will be an official visit, is one of Alabama’s top offensive line targets and remains in daily contact with the Crimson Tide staff.

I thought there was a good chance Ekiyor would flip from Michigan to Alabama over the summer, but that talk died down after two canceled trips. So, how close are the two schools now?

“Most of the time I’m sticking [with] Michigan, but sometimes I have second thoughts and think Alabama looks good,” Ekiyor told 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong.

What’s interesting about Wiltfong’s report is it seems like Alabama is now recruiting Ekiyor at center. Over the summer, the Crimson Tide were focused on recruiting him as a guard.

“They have a void at center right now and need someone to come in next year and compete for the spot,” Ekiyor said. “Center is one of their biggest needs on their team and I can come in and compete for it.”

Alabama has two offensive line commits in Jarrett Bell and Tommy Brown. Bell is expected to compete at center or guard at Alabama. The Crimson Tide also signed 3-star prospect Hunter Brannon in the 2017 class as a center.

SEC Country will have a full look at all of the expected visitors for the Sept. 30 SEC matchup between Alabama and Ole Miss late next week.

Rodney Garner checks out high school game

Auburn coaches won’t hit the road Friday night as they head to Columbia, Mo., but one went to a Thursday night game.

Defensive line coach Rodney Garner was back in the Birmingham area for the second week in a row. This time, he went to see someone within his own position group. Garner checked out Jackson-Olin High School, the former home of Auburn defensive end TD Moultry, as well as big-time 2018 target Coynis Miller who plays defensive tackle.

At 6-foot-2 and 300 pounds, Miller plays on the on the offensive side of the ball, as well. He carried the ball 3 times for only 5 yards, but he scored a 6-yard touchdown in the third quarter to add to his season total. Miller finished last season with 12 touchdowns.

Nobody on Auburn’s staff will be on the recruiting trail Friday night.

So far this season, Tigers’ coaches have checked out the following players, to my knowledge: Miller, Shedrick Jackson, George Pickens, Trey Hill, Michael Harris, Dylan Wonnum, JJ Peterson, Harold Joiner and Channing Tindall.

Somebody please tell me Karl Dunbar was there as well

Alabama, Ohio State, South Carolina are Top 3 for elite '19 DE Izuchukwu

quote:

The Latest: After moving to the United States from Nigeria, Class of 2019 four-star defensive end Ani Izuchukwu spent the first two years of his high school career learning the game of football. And while he's still picking up the nuances of the game, his raw physical ability has already made him a top target of several of college football's top programs. After a busy summer of camps and visits Izuchukwu is ready to focus on three programs, Alabama, Ohio State and South Carolina, as he heads into an important stretch of visits and perhaps gets ready to announce a commitment. Rivals.com caught up with Izuchukwu to break down his favorites.

In His Words: "I had a good time during the summer going on visits and getting a chance to meet a lot of the coaches and work with them on the field. Now I want to see what it's like for a game day and start to think about making my decision."

Ohio State: "I have the best relationship with their coaches. I talk to them the most and they make sure I get to know all the coaches there. My friend Max Wray is going there and they are good at helping players get drafted high. They have good academics and great facilities. When I was there for their camp in the summer they really showed me that they have a plan for me to keep developing and they think I can be a big-time player in their defense. I'm going to visit their Oct. 28 when they play Penn State."

Alabama: "I love Coach Tosh, he's a great guy and a great coach who has helped make a lot of players better. They are good at preparing guys for the NFL and life after football. They have compared me to some other guys they have had in the past who have made it to the NFL and that would be a dream come true for me to make it to that level. I have been there many times for visits but I want to get back again so I'm going for the Arkansas game on Oct. 14. They have great fan support and tradition and I can't wait to see it again."

South Carolina: "I liked the coaches this summer when I went to camp there, I got to work with them on the field and really get a feel for what they would be like to play for and that was a good experiences. I spent a lot of time with the coaches and I really like them. Coach Muschamp is obviously a great defensive coach and their team has a lot of good defensive linemen that they have helped developed. Their defensive coaches have done a good job of getting guys to the NFL and that is my goal. I'm going to visit there Oct. 7 when they play Arkansas."

On a decision: "These are the three schools I'm focused on right now so I want to take these visits and see how it goes. I could see myself deciding by the end of the year."

Rivals Reaction: Izuchukwu has a unique story and he is just scratching the surface in terms of his potential as a football player. It will take the right program and coaches to help him blossom, so it's not a surprise to see him taking a closer look at his favorites. Depending on how these visits go could say a lot about where he ends up making his commitment.

With the year’s first signing day roughly three months away and traditional Signing Day awaiting everyone in early Feb., Rivals.com takes the temperature of some of the most important recruiting battles unfolding in Florida. Below, we have a look at where four of the state’s most highly regarded prospects may land when it comes time for them to sign letters of intent.

CB Patrick Surtain

The situation: Surtain has long named LSU as his leader but says the gap isn’t quite as wide as it once was. The fact that the Tigers are off to a decent start in 2018 will likely help solidify that position. That said, holding off an in-state power like Florida State and a couple of national contenders in Alabama and Clemson won’t be a simple task.

The Frontrunner: LSU

This is old news. The Tigers have been the team to beat for some time and that hasn’t changed. And while LSU fans would feel better if Surtain was already in the fold instead of shopping around, Ed Orgeron and company have to like where they stand. Letting Surtain get away down the stretch would be a bad look at this point.

The Other Option: Florida State

Florida State has a lot to sell when it comes to landing Surtain and some people in Tallahassee are quietly confident about the situation despite Surtain naming LSU the leader. Then, most coaching staffs are confident right up until they’re not.

But Don’t Count Out: Clemson and Alabama

LSU and Florida State are the most likely landing spots for Surtain, but it’s unwise to totally dismiss a pair of recruiting powerhouses with recent national titles. Both programs have been involved for months and each is likely to receive a late-season visit.

The NCAA makes all of these stupid arse rules and they have no way to police them. It's so damn crazy.

Not sure how Savion will pan out, but a tall, athletic guy is exactly the type of bodies Bama will need.

Worst case, he ends up like Tony Brown. Hell of an athlete, but can only contribute in certain roles.

My concern is he continues his bad off the field decisions that led to his departure from LSU.

The LSU coaching staff has been visible across the state in recent weeks. It has been a recruiting staple ever since Ed Orgeron took over the Tigers’ head coach.

With LSU set to host Syracuse for a Saturday night game, yet again several assistant coaches will be out on the road hitting the recruiting trail.

Steve Ensminger and Mickey Joseph will return to Northern Louisiana to see a bevy of Shreveport, La.,-area prospects in the Parkway vs. Evangel tilt. LSU holds commitments from a trio of Evangel players, including 4-star defensive lineman Davin Cotton, 3-star linebacker Micah Baskerville and 3-star defensive back Ar’Darius Washington. Cotton is out for the remainder of his senior season with an undisclosed leg injury, so this will provide Ensminger an opportunity to check on the state’s top-ranked defensive lineman. All three are firm in their commitments to LSU.

Of course, Parkway is host to LSU’s top offensive targets in the 2018 recruiting class: 5-star wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. and 4-star quarterback Justin Rogers. Both Marshall and Rogers are going to be on the sidelines for this rivalry game. Marshall broke his fibula and dislocated his ankle two weeks ago and Rogers recently underwent surgery to repair a torn ACL on Sept. 11. Joseph will do his part to check in on Marshall, the state’s top-ranked prospect. Ensminger can do the same on Rogers, a TCU commit who remains atop of LSU’s list at quarterback for this class.

Both are early enrollees and will sign their letters of intent in December.

Dennis Johnson will stay close to Baton Rouge and visit 3-star defensive line commit Nelson Jenkins for Plaquemine’s home game against West St. John. Jenkins was one of the Tigers’ earlier commitments in the Class of 2018 and flipped from Kansas to LSU in the days leading up to “Boys From The Boot.” Despite sitting out the spring with an injury, Jenkins has added offers from the likes of Alabama and Florida, while Texas and TCU are continuing to monitor him. Nonetheless, he has remained solid to LSU.

Corey Raymond will take in Scotlandville’s game against Central of Baton Rouge and check on LSU’s highest-rated commit Kelvin Joseph for his homecoming game. The Army All-American defensive back has reaffirmed his commitment to LSU in recent months after teammate and best friend JaVonte Smart committed to the Tigers’ basketball team. Last week, Joseph received a visit from Alabama area recruiter Burton Burns as his team faced Southern Lab. Joseph is still going to take all of his official visits, but interestingly enough, he will attend Alabama and Florida road games when they play LSU. The 4-star defensive back will also make his way to Florida State and Kansas, as well as LSU.

Jeff Grimes will return to the Lone Star State as he checks in on prized Class of 2019 offensive line commit Kenyon Green. The 5-star offensive tackle is the No. 2 prospect in his recruiting class and is one of the most sought-after linemen overall. He committed to LSU early on and has since seen his recruitment take off. However, Green remains solid in his pledge although he is checking out rival programs such as Alabama, Texas and Texas A&M. The 5-star prospect is expected to make his way back to Baton Rouge for the Auburn game.
