Our 2018 recruiting is starting out so slowly in contrast to 2017. Early on last year we knew we would have a goat class and it turned out to be true. This year with our recruiter losses and the slow start, average in-state talent, may just be the opposite. Interesting to see how it shapes up.

Nation’s No. 1 player says it means the world for Alabama to offer and 5-star prospect commits elsewhere
quote:

Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Roll Tide-ings, a rundown of everything happening in Alabama Crimson Tide recruiting, with Chris Kirschner. Today, we discuss the latest with the nation’s No. 1 player, Kayvon Thibodeaux, and another new offer out for Alabama.

Thibodeaux reacts to Alabama offer

Alabama has now entered the race for the nation’s No. 1 overall recruit in the Class of 2019.

Kayvon Thibodeaux, a 5-star defensive end from Dorsey High School (Los Angeles), got word from his head coach that the Crimson Tide want him to play football for them in two years. Naturally, he was excited to receive the news.

“It means the world, honestly,” Thibodeaux told SEC Country. “They are the best school in college football. They are a great school with a great program, but I have equal interest in all of the schools that have offered me.”

Thibodeaux hasn’t visited Tuscaloosa yet, but he hopes to make it to campus this spring or summer. As always when it comes to recruiting, prospects can’t be considered serious targets until they visit any program at least once. It’s extremely rare to have a prospect — let alone an elite one — commit somewhere where they haven’t been to before.

The 6-foot-5, 235-pound prospect said leaving home for college is not an issue, even if the stereotype, for the most part, when it comes to California kids is that they stay on the West Coast. Only two of the top 15 players in the 2017 class from California crossed the Mississippi River to play college football. One of those players was 5-star Alabama freshman running back Najee Harris — the other was 4-star DE D.J. Johnson, who signed with Miami.

Offer extended to 4-star safety from Texas

Alabama still is in the early stages of figuring out who it ultimately wants in the Class of 2018, which is why we have seen numerous offers go out to top prospects over the past few weeks.

DeMarvion Overshown, a 4-star safety from Arp (Texas) High School, was offered a scholarship from defensive line coach Karl Dunbar on Thursday.

“I was super excited because one of the greatest schools in the country just offered me,” Overshown told SEC Country shortly after Alabama offered.

He hasn’t visited Tuscaloosa yet, but he’s already interested in the Crimson Tide.

“My interest is pretty high because of their success and I have just heard that it’s a good school. I’m going to do my best to get up there.”

Overshown is rated as the nation’s No. 14 safety in the Class of 2018 and the No. 16 prospect in the state of Texas.

5-star prospect commits to Miami

Lorenzo Lingard
, the nation’s No. 2 running back in the Class of 2018, committed to Miami on Thursday.

Lingard had visited Tuscaloosa back in the summer and said Alabama was one of the main schools he was considering.

“There were three eye-catchers at Alabama,” Lingard said at the time. “The coaching staff is just full of great people. That’s something I am looking for in a college. I like their personalities a lot. They have great energy and knowledge. The second thing was when I went to camp, I really liked the intensity they had going on. That’s my type of style. That’s how I practice and how I play. Then, finally, coach (Burton) Burns, the running backs coach, we got along really well. I think it would be great to be coached by a guy like that.”

The need for a running back in this recruiting cycle isn’t as important this year because the Crimson Tide convinced 5-star prospect Najee Harris to stick with his commitment and Alabama signed 4-star prospect Brian Robinson in the Class of 2017, too. Dameon Pierce, a 4-star running back, is committed to Alabama in the Class of 2018.

Alabama is interested in Lingard, and I doubt it will stop recruiting him now that he’s committed to the Hurricanes. The Tide are also interested in 5-star prospect Zamir White, who has visited Tuscaloosa multiple times.

No idea how this kid isn't from Louisiana. Thought for sure when I read that name it was a lock for Bama. You just can't beat Bama in their own territory

BJ Emmons had another surgery on his foot.

I hope this isn't turning into a chronic issue.

We got a CB for Josh Jobe, the corner who is committed to Miami. He jumped up to #31 overall on 247 the other day.

I hope that's all. I wonder if they will keep him in a black jersey during the spring, just as a precaution?

Mac Jones interview. He will wear number 10. Macsiah
quote:

Jones: I just like managing the game. I never like to do too much. I just get the job done. I do what my coaches tell me, and if I do that, I’ll be fine and I won’t have to make any crazy plays. Really just a role player and a pretty good leader. Roll Tide.
