The pursuit of playoff spots continues to gain importance for high school football teams across the country as temperatures drop and remaining regular-season games dwindle. More than ever, premier playmakers are counted on to deliver key performances.

Several college recruits rose to the occasion this weekend, further solidifying their status as coveted stars and program leaders. Prolific passers, dominant rushers and field-stretching receivers once again steal the spotlight in Bleacher Report's rundown of noteworthy efforts.

Here's our latest look at future collegiate contributors who handled high school opponents with authority.

4-star WR Henry Ruggs

Class: 2017

High School: Lee (Montgomery, Alabama)

Size: 6'0", 173 lbs

Scout.com Ranking: No. 33 receiver

Recruitment Status: Offers include Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State and Georgia

Crimson Tide and Tigers coaches would love to land in-state sensation Henry Ruggs on national signing day because of his ability to alter games in a variety of ways. He did just that Friday night, racking up 260 total yards and two scores in a loss to Central High School, according to Cary L. Clark of Scout.com.

Ruggs collected seven receptions for 163 yards, extending his impact in the rushing attack. He operated as a Wildcat quarterback, carrying the ball seven times for 97 yards.

Each of his touchdowns demonstrated Ruggs' threat to score from anywhere on the field. He turned a short pass into a 59-yard touchdown while also delivering a 75-yard run off a quarterback draw.

Bold would kinda surprise me. I can't imagine predicting that to happen given they don't even "know" who their HC is going to be yet.

Moses is an EE so they probably need someone in place by January 5th to sway him.

This weekend is shaping up to be a big one for visitors to Alabama and Auburn.

No. 1 Alabama hosts No. 6 Texas A&M. No. 21 Auburn hosts No. 17 Arkansas.

It's worth diving into the importance of the visitors later in the week in case plans change, but here are some official ones.

Alabama is planning on hosting five-star running back Cam Akers of Clinton, Miss., five-star offensive tackle Foster Sarell of Graham, Wash., five-star linebacker Baron Browning of Kennedale, Texas, three-star tight end Major Tennison of Bullard, Texas and four-star safety Jaylen Kelly-Powell of Detroit, Mich., per 247Sports. Sarell (No. 2), Akers (No. 7) and Browning (No. 9) are top 10 prospects nationally.

Of those, Tennison figures to be the best commitment possibility this weekend.

Alabama linebacker commit VanDarius Cowan and defensive back commit Jhavonte Dean are also scheduled to officially visit.

Tennison down to three as official visit approaches

Alabama already has a tight end commitment in the Class of 2017 in 3-star prospect Kedrick James, but it would like to add another. Major Tennison, a 3-star prospect from Bullard, Texas, is at the top of the list.

Tennison told SEC Country on Tuesday night that he’s down to three schools: Alabama, Georgia and Michigan. He will be on campus this weekend for his first official visit, and he said a commitment could possibly come if everything goes well.

“If I get there, and the trip goes very well and I’m blown away and it’s the place for me, then it’s the place for me,” Tennison said. “There would be no reason for me to continue this little process.”

The good news for Alabama in regards to his other top two schools is that he doesn’t have any official visits set to those places. His answer to why he doesn’t have any plans to visit Michigan or Georgia bodes well for Alabama’s chances at landing his commitment.

“If Alabama is the place for me, I really don’t think there’s a need to take an official visit and put doubt in my mind when I’ve already been up there, talked to their coaches and experienced their specific towns,” Tennison said. “Like I said, if I feel like Alabama is the place for me, then there’s no reason to see anywhere else when those schools are going to put out all of the stops to impress me.”

The last time Tennison was in Tuscaloosa was back in July, and he was on commitment watch back then. He didn’t want to rush into a decision at the time because he had just de-committed from Texas a few days prior to visiting Alabama.

Since that July visit, Tennison has gone silent with his recruitment. He told SEC Country that he can’t remember the last time he granted an interview because he has just wanted to focus on the schools he’s considering and didn’t want to “put his business out in the open.”

That doesn’t mean Tennison hasn’t been keeping a close eye on his schools of interest. Out of his top three colleges, Tennison said Alabama is “for sure” recruiting him the hardest. Ever since his visit to Tuscaloosa, he has pictured himself wearing a Crimson Tide jersey.

“I think any kid would dream of playing for them and going to school there,” Tennison said. “They have a freaking awesome coaching staff.”
