Posted this on the recruiting board but will post here as well since some don't venture over there. After talking with some folks and digging on it, this comes down to Les making an in home visit in October. October is not a contact period, therefore Less made an in home visit during a non contact period. Major violation and things could've been much worse penalty wise. Still a bulk shite rule but the rule is the rule and we broke it. Now they need to fix or abolish the rule or we need to no longer allow FAAs to be signed.

5-star QB Jawon Pass has Alabama in top 2, glad Auburn 'didn't make me work and sell peanuts'

Jawon Pass is one of the top quarterbacks in the country.

Right now, the five-star recruit has Alabama and North Carolina in his top two, and at the moment is underwhelmed with Auburn. The Tigers are making him a high priority, though.

Pass took a visit to Auburn on Tuesday. The Columbus, Ga., quarterback used to sell popcorn during Auburn home games, according to 247Sports.

"The basketball game was exciting," Pass said of Auburn. "I'm just glad they didn't make me work and sell peanuts."

Pass has more than 20 verbal offers, but said Auburn "was late" in its offer.

Pass was a high school teammate at Carver with Alabama signee Mekhi Brown. His older brother, Khane Pass, signed with Louisville.

4-star Mississippi defensive end Jeffery Simmons sees early playing time opportunity at Alabama

Print Drew Champlin | dchamplin@al.com By Drew Champlin | dchamplin@al.com

Jeffery Simmons got a Valentine's Day present from the Alabama coaching staff when defensive line coach Bo Davis called with an offer.

The next Saturday, Simmons took a trip to Alabama, where he personally met with Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban. Saban also reassured the 6-foot-4, 261-pound defensive end from Noxubee County High School in Macon, Miss., with an offer.

"I had a great time (on the visit)," Simmons said. "It was just an honor to sit down and talk to Coach Saban and spend some with Coach Bo. I enjoyed everything, the facilities, and just had a great time."

Alabama is hunting defensive linemen in the 2016 class and presented its case to Simmons for early playing time. The Crimson Tide are heavy with seniors and junior draft prospects across this upcoming season's defensive line.

"When I was talking to Coach Saban and Coach Bo, they were going to be losing four to five defensive linemen next year," Simmons said. "If I do come to 'Bama, I would be a big fill-in because they would need me to come off the edge and set the edge."

Simmons is a four-star recruit in the 247Sports composite, and ranked as the No. 76 overall prospect in the 247Sports individual rankings.

Simmons said he has offers from Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Southern Miss, Memphis, Arkansas State, Jackson State and Alcorn State. He said his coach has talked to Clemson and Auburn, and he's getting mail from Tennessee and Florida State.

"I felt pretty good, but many people kind of shut down when they get a big-time offer," Simmons said. "To me, it just made me want to go harder and work harder in the weight room."

Simmons has a 3.9 GPA and had 107 tackles, 14.5 for loss, last season along with eight forced fumbles. He also had six receiving touchdowns for the Mississippi Class 4A state champions.

Simmons said he was still open and didn't have any favorites right now. He plans on going to Southern Miss' junior day this weekend if the snow clears up. He said he plans to make another trip to Alabama during spring practice.

As for a commitment timetable, Simmons said he felt no rush, but has set a goal to commit on TV at a high school all-star game if the opportunity presents itself.

Alabama freshman quarterback Blake Barnett reminds ex-Tide linebacker of former SEC star

Nico Johnson said Blake Barnett kept looking taller and taller the closer he got.

Johnson was on Alabama's practice field watching some older players work out during a visit to campus in January when he saw Barnett, the Tide's five-star freshman quarterback, off to the side throwing passes to one of Alabama's young wide receivers.

Johnson didn't recognize Barnett until someone told him who he was.

The former Alabama and current Cincinnati Bengals linebacker then watched Barnett throw before approaching the young quarterback to talk later on.

While Johnson did not see Barnett run, the 6-foot-5, 200-pound quarterback's size, long arms and arm reminded Johnson of former Arkansas star quarterback Ryan Mallett.

"He's so tall," Johnson said of Barnett, who enrolled at Alabama in January. "That's what reminded me a lot of Ryan because he's so tall. When I walked up on him, it was like, dang, he kept getting taller and taller. He also has really long arms. And besides him throwing, that's what reminded me of Ryan Mallett, and he has an arm. He has an arm."

Johnson said he was also impressed with Barnett during a brief conversation.

"I love to tell the young guys when I go back [about watching film] because I wish players could have told me, until Rolando McClain came and grabbed me, that watching film would help a lot more than anything," Johnson said. "I wish players would have told me that when I first got there. ... So I asked him [whether] he was watching a lot of film, and he said, yeah, he was meeting with coach Kiffin every day.

"And I was like, man, that's going to be big for you. If you keep doing that, you're going to be OK. He seems like a great kid. ... I can't wait to see him perform."

The Corona, California native will be part of a group competing to replace last year's starting quarterback, Blake Sims.

"I wouldn't rule [Barnett starting] out at all," Saban said earlier this month. "If he's the best player, why would we not play him? That's like saying a guy is from California so we should not play him because he's from California. We wouldn't have recruited him. If the guy's the best player, we're going to play him.

"Just like Julio Jones was the best player when he was a wide receiver as a freshman and we played him. Amari Cooper was. Trent Richardson was. If a guy's ready to play and he's the best player, that means he's done something to deserve the right to play."

College Football's 10 Burning Offseason Recruiting Questions
By Tyler Donohue , National Recruiting Analyst Feb 26, 2015

Will Alabama Finally Surrender Its National Recruiting Crown?

Alabama may be a couple years removed from its most recent national title, but Nick Saban hasn't slowed down one bit on the recruiting trail.

His Crimson Tide have now secured five consecutive top-rated classes in composite rankings. The streak extends all the way back to when this current crop of prospects was in sixth grade.

Could this be the cycle that finally sees someone surpass Saban on signing day?

USC charged hard in 2015 and should be in the mix again now that severe scholarship sanctions are no longer a hindrance. Ohio State and Florida State are contenders to capitalize on recent success and have already established outstanding core components in their respective classes.

SEC rivals Ole Miss and LSU are also off to strong starts, boasting top-five recruiting hauls.

We anticipate another star-studded class in Tuscaloosa but Alabama is operating at an uncharacteristic pace to this point. The team holds just four commitments, though that group features 5-star cornerback Shyheim Carter and top-rated "athlete" Demetris Robertson.

Saban's ability to fight off other programs atop the recruiting spectrum will ultimately depend on his ability to again reel off a series of top-tier pledges that push the team beyond reach. That battle starts in Alabama, where 5-star defenders Lyndell Wilson, Marlon Davidson and Ben Davis, a Tide Legacy, remain uncommitted.

Toppling the Tide will be no easy task.

I gotta confess, this Womack thing is like Christmas in February:

quote:

Maybe some will finally realize how much scum fills the SEC HQ. This office exists for one purpose. They have proven time and again they will ggo to any length to cheat. Their impartial treatment of the 14 universities should not be permitted.

It's time to fire EVERYONE and relocate the HQ out of the Gump State. If that's not possible, it's time to contact other conference schools and form a new conference.

Screw the SEC!!!

quote:

This is the kind of BS that I believe Nick Saban himself is capable of promoting. He is a paranoid little midget and he knows that he must have 4x talent to have any chance to win championships. He also knows that LSU is his biggest threat in recruiting and he would do anything to maintain an advantage. Us getting some highly ranked Alabama kids on campus last weekend is a start. If we can start winning the 1-1 battles for OOS kids, I believe it will be the beginning of the end for Saban. When people start to get the fact that no coach before him has EVER had such an advantage with 7 or 8 #1 recruiting classes, it will diminish his achievements as a coach.

His fricking "process" starts and ends with him having a distinct advantage on the field. Les Miles has been playing checkers while Saban is playing chess. If nothing else, we have significant inside knowledge with Steele and a new coach (O) which can hang with Saban. If everyone doesn't see the next move by Saban, you haven't been paying attention. What could Saban do to hurt LSU?

Saban will eventually go after Orgeron and we will find out how much O really wants to be in Louisiana. I hope he's here to stay. TAF and our AD will ultimately decide how that scenario plays out.

quote:

All this simply means is that Shorty is scared of LSU's recent staff/recruiting improvements and he knows he must do everything to politically attack our program....as for the white trash that we were dealing with, just add them to the garbage bin that Shorty lives in....lol....jmho

quote:

Sooooo......how come Bama gets out of this Scott free? And frick that Womack kid also! He knew what he was doing and did it anyway. Hell I'm sure BAMA paid him anyway.

Barnett reminds me of a less hyper AJ McCarron with a little more height, better arm stength, and 10x better speed. He has the confidence and moxy AJ had, but seems a tad less douchey. Big thing AJ has on him is football smarts and accuracy. Both of those will come and I expect him to be twice as good in accuracy and smarts by A-Day and then twice more than that by Fall Camp. EE is huge for him.

I know it won't happen, but I wouldn't be opposed to Barnett winning the job this year or next. Maybe Kiffin can read the defenses for Blake until he gets used to doing it for himself. His cockiness may come across as douchey, but you have to be confident as a qb. It would be great to have some more continuity at the position.

His body isn't ready for the SEC. He's the best QB recruit we've had in a long, long time, I just don't want to see him get pummeled and break in half like Brody did.

It'd be sweet if Cornwell or Barnett won the job, for the sake of consistency for the next few years.

it's not like we've been recruiting scrubs. Since Morris, Bateman and Cornwell were both highly ranked. I'd love it if he were good enough to take over early. But the new guy on campus is always the most popular. So I'm not gonna hold my breath and expect the next Elway.

dont see it happening (cornwell more likely than barnett imho). it will be coker for a year, then a cornwell, bateman, barnett battle. then there will be an exodus of qbs regardless of who wins. Alec(x) Morris will likely transfer or just graduate and stop playing if he doesnt win the job this year (which seems likey). if bateman doesnt win that battle to replace coker he will transfer to div ii to play immediately. If bateman does win, i could see cornwell transferring, as he would only have 1 year to play if bateman started 2. Barnett would not transfer if bateman won (especially if cornwell left). If Cornwell wins the job this year instead of coker. even then barnett might wait it out on the hopes that cornwell would only play 2 and leave early (which if hes good enough to win the job this year would be plausible). If coker wins this year and cornwell wins next year, barnett will go. I kinda hope its cornwell myself, that guy has the best natural arm ive ever seen, but hes been plagued by injuries. we really need to get another good qb in the next recruiting cycle, because with the way these numbers look, we are probably going to get thin at qb in a hurry .
