When I pitched the idea of the Farrell50, my top 50 college prospects in order with a look back at their ranking and recruitment, I knew there would be a few serious debates and some moaning about guys who didn't make the list. However, I didn't expect the blowback regarding having Vols defensive end Derek Barnett (above) being ranked No. 40 and Aggies defensive end Myles Garrett at No. 7. Of course, the blowback was from Tennessee fans, but it was strong.
Yes, Barnett had a better statistical freshman year than Garrett, but by putting Garrett so high I was talking about his ceiling. Barnett is much closer to being as good as he can be while Garrett has No. 1 overall NFL pick potential as he showed Saturday against Arizona State with eight tackles, two sacks, three tackles for a loss and a forced fumble in a dominating performance. With the amount of outrage from the Vols fans over this disparity in ranking, this will be an interesting duo to follow. I feel very confident that Garrett is going to have the better season, was the better prospect coming out of high school and will be the higher NFL pick and better pro. That's not a slight on Barnett, who could also be a high draft pick and very good NFL player and is having a great college career. It's just that Garrett has more of the freak factor.
And I'm beginning to kick myself for not listening to guys like Mid-South Recruiting Analyst Jason Howell, who wanted Garrett No. 1 (he finished No. 2) over Da'Shawn Hand. Hand has great upside as well and is fighting more for playing time at 'Bama, but right now he can't even come close to comparing with what Garrett has done and isn't as physically gifted (length, athleticism, etc.).

DB Minkah Fitzpatrick, Alabama, No. 24 overall in 2015 Rivals100
Fitzpatrick did a bit of everything for the Crimson Tide at A&T Stadium in Dallas, compiling four tackles, including a sack, and a pass breakup in an easy win against Wisconsin.

Free Bleacher Report Article on Ben Davis
It's long so here are some of the parts I found interesting:
It's long so here are some of the parts I found interesting:
quote:
Auburn secured a significant recruiting victory Sept. 4 when top-ranked in-state defensive end Marlon Davidson committed to the Tigers, catching attention from a fellow 5-star Alabama standout.
"Knowing that he's going to play down there definitely bumps Auburn up for me," linebacker Ben Davis told Bleacher Report. "Marlon and me are best friends. We're like brothers. Auburn was already one of my top schools, but that's a big deal."
quote:
Davidson, a 6'4", 260-pound prospect from Greenville High School, is already putting in recruiting work with his buddy.
"We've been talking and texting back and forth since Marlon committed. He definitely wants me there too, but I'm not picking a school anytime soon. I'm focused on setting up visits," Davis said.
quote:
Despite his status as a decorated program legacy, Davis maintains he doesn't feel immense pressure to attend college in Tuscaloosa.
"My parents tell me all the time, wherever I choose they're going to be behind me 100 percent," he said. "The most important thing is to find the best fit where I feel comfortable."
quote:
The same can be said for Lyndell "Mack" Wilson, another 5-star Alabama linebacker who holds offers from Auburn and the Crimson Tide. Davis explained he wants to be a "package deal" with Wilson on national signing day.

National Signing Day is a long way off, but recruiting classes are slowly -- or in Miami's case, not so slowly -- filling up. Plenty of highly-rated prospects are yet to commit, so with roughly six months to go, here are the top 10 uncommitted prospects in the country, per the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Rashan Gary
The first school the 6'4, 290-pounder (who can run a 4.74 40) mentioned when I interviewed him in 2014 was Alabama, and the Tide have been on this Garden State prospect for a long time. Other SEC schools like Georgia and Auburn, as well as ACC school Clemson are trying to get in the mix.
But my pick for the country's No. 1 overall recruit is Michigan. Gary's former coach Chris Partridge is the new director of recruiting operations, and two former teammates of Gary's, Jabrill Peppers and Juwann Bushell-Beatty, are also in Ann Arbor.

Little, who isn't so little at 6'6, 305, was committed to Texas A&M for more than a year, but re-opened his recruitment in July. The new favorite is Alabama, because Nick Saban's recruiting territory knows no bounds.

Dexter Lawrence
No idea. The 6'4.5, 335-pounder is just beginning his recruitment and told me in early May that he was favoring 17 schools. He claims offers from Florida, Florida State, Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, and many others. The visits are coming, and we'll learn more as he begins to see campuses.

Lyndell Wilson
Alabama. The country's top linebacker spoke glowingly of Alabama when I interviewed him this spring. Auburn is in the mix, but the Tide have done a great job recruiting him. Like with Brown and Georgia, the state of Alabama's top player going anywhere but Bama would be a shock.
Wilson is an extremely athletic player at 6'2 and 220 pounds. He strikes down running backs and also shows some ability as a pass rusher and in coverage playing for powerhouse Carver.

Let's refer to the standard LSU-Louisiana test:
Has LSU showed long-term interest in a Louisiana prospect? Yes. Has the prospect made repeated visits to Baton Rouge? Yes. Then the prospect is a good bet to play at LSU.
Alabama is interested, but doesn't seem to have the same traction with Lawrence that it has with previous Monroe-area prospects like Cameron Robinson.

This makes it sound like it was a huge surprise for him to commit to AU. just not buying it unless he was really torn between UA and AU and the quotes when he committed really had merit that he wants UA to still recruit him hard and the process really just begun for him. But I am not buying that.

One thing I got out of that is we going to get RLawrence. Sounds like a good deal.

A couple of dudes on BOL made predictions on who we finish with. They aren't VIP posts so I'll share:
This one was made by Crimson Ghost. He puts out his predictions quite regularly.
quote:
with 18 commits(19 w/ grayshirt Christian Bell), I would love to see us close with the following.
due to the fact that we play more nickel (4 man fronts) than not I'll start there.
20. DE-J.Simmons, MS
21. DE-J.Robinson, FL (FSU)
22. LB-B.Davis, AL
23. LB-L.Wilson, AL
add in a pair of quality DT's to the group above & you have a nasty future nickel front.
24. CB-N.Knott, MS
25. S-N.Warrior, GA
26. OT-G.Little, TX
27. Ath-D.White, LA (HB /RB/ monster LB)
factor in that one or two of the current verbal's at this juncture usually doesn't stick...
28. WR-K.Gavin, FL
29. WR-M.Jones, LA

This one is from Roll Tide Rich:
quote:
YES --- 20. DE-J.Simmons, MS
MAYBE --- 21. DE-J.Robinson, FL (or Rashard Lawrence or Dexter Lawrence or Michail Carter)
YES --- 22. LB-B.Davis, AL
YES --- 23. LB-L.Wilson, AL
YES --- 24. CB-N.Knott, MS
MAYBE --- 25. S-N.Warrior, GA (think they like him, but numbers keep him off the commit list for now)
YES --- 26. OT-G.Little, TX
MAYBE --- 27. Ath-D.White, LA
YES --- 28. WR-K.Gavin, FL
NO --- 29. WR-M.Jones, LA (replaced by Cavin Ridley)
and add Terrell Hall and AJ Brown
2-3 current guys probably won't make it to February, either on their own or by being told to look elsewhere
