Texas is the home of Friday Night Lights and some of the top football prospects in the country. It has been one of the strongest hotbeds of football talent over the years, and remains a key area for college coaches across the country. The race is well under way for 2016 and 2017 prospects and we take a look at who is winning the race to capture the best collection of Texas talent.

Alabama just misses the top 10, which says a lot considering the Crimson Tide only have three commitments from the state of Texas. Rivals100 DT Kendell Jones is joined by Rivals250 QB Jalen Hurts and three-star OL Chris Owens adds some punch. Stanford is just behind Alabama, but they did move up with the addition of three-star RB Brandon Stephens. He is joined by Rivals100 TE Kaden Smith and three-star DT Michael Williams in the Cardinal class.

The 2015 football season is underway across America, as high school programs aim for early success. Top prospects are paramount in those efforts while working to validate widespread recruiting attention.

This senior class of standouts is suddenly just five months away from signing national letters of intent and several players will arrive at college campuses in January as early enrollees. We focus our attention on 10 uncommitted athletes who sit atop 247Sports composite rankings, gauging their development based on summer camp assessment and initial senior season progress.

Here's a look at this collection of elite recruits, including many who continue to provide glimpses at eventual collegiate stardom.

9. LB Ben Davis

Trending: Even

247Sports Crystal Ball Leader Alabama (100 percent)

The Latest

Ben Davis, the son of all-time Crimson Tide tackles leader Wayne Davis, is more physically evolved than many of his contemporaries at linebacker. Standing 6'3", 240 pounds, the playmaker actually blended in with defensive ends at The Opening, an annual summer prospect showcase held in Oregon.

Pass-rushing is an element of his game that stands to improve most and you can expect Davis to surpass his junior season sack total (four) this fall. More effectiveness in that department would make him a candidate to wreak havoc off the edge as a true freshman next year.

His senior season started with a well-rounded effort. Davis tallied eight tackles in a win for Gordo High School (Alabama), adding a touchdown reception in the process. Alabama is viewed as a heavy favorite to land the legacy target, but Auburn, LSU and Florida State are among other teams in the mix.

6. LB Lyndell Wilson

Trending: Even

247Sports Crystal Ball Leader: Alabama (92 percent)

The Latest

The young man they call "Mack" continues to make improvements. Now in his third year at linebacker, the 6'2", 220-pound athlete looks confident from sideline-to-sideline, developing plenty of good defensive habits.

Lyndell Wilson's role as a leader for Carver High School (Alabama) augments an impressive skill set that allows him to stifle offensive strategies on the ground and through the air. He has the physical and mental makeup to evolve into an eventual captain for his college squad, though that ultimate destination may mot be determined until national signing day.

"Schools saw I had the ability, and I improved my game. I put it in my head that I was going to try to have every offer in the United States. And now here I am with a lot of decisions," he told Ethan Bernal of the Montgomery Advertiser.

Long viewed as the front-runner for his signature, Alabama must contend with Auburn, Louisville, LSU and others.

2. OL Greg Little

Trending: Up

247Sports Crystal Ball Leader: Alabama (56 percent)

The Latest

Greg Little is the catalyst up front for three-time defending Texas state champion Allen High School following the departure of fellow tackle Bobby Evans, a 2015 Oklahoma signee. He's played tackle at both bookend positions, progressing from a raw, converted tight end to a shutdown blocker.

His ability to maneuver downhill and laterally with burst makes the 6'6", 305-pound prospect one of the premier recruits we've scouted a the position this decade. He was the only offensive lineman who consistently challenged top-rated defensive tackle Rashan Gary at The Opening and presents plug-and-play potential at the next level.

Little, who decommitted from Texas A&M this summer, is still likely to land in the SEC. LSU, Alabama, Georgia, Auburn and Ole Miss made the cut for his newly released top-five list.

"I like all of the programs. All five are contenders every year," he told B/R's Damon Sayles.

1. DL Rashan Gary

Trending: Up

247Sports Crystal Ball Leader: Michigan (46 percent)

The Latest

Rashan Gary, who landed his first offer in eighth grade and now holds more than 60 scholarships, never fails to rise up when the spotlight shines brightest. He earned defensive line MVP honors in July at The Opening and was probably the star-studded event's most impressive prospect, regardless of position.

The 6'4", 311-pound prospect collected 55 tackles and 14 sacks last season for New Jersey powerhouse Paramus Catholic. He blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown during a live Bleacher Report game assessment, sacking Tennessee quarterback commit Jarrett Guarantano six times in that contest despite blocking schemes secifically geared toward stopping him.

Gary originally planned to announce his top five favorites before the season but pushed things back. Georgia, Michigan, Auburn, LSU, USC, Ohio State and Notre Dame are among teams still battling for official visits.

All five schools are looking at Little to ultimately play the left tackle position. Little said Alabama will start him at right tackle until Cam Robinson declares for the NFL draft. He's expected to be a top draft pick when that time comes.

In addition to his top five, Little, who measured in at 6'6" and 318 pounds at The Opening in July, added that he has a "secret top three" that he will release at a later date. Nov. 4 is his birthday, and that's the date he's expecting to announce his verbal commitment.

From the same article:

Sept. 23 is a big day for 4-star cornerback Nigel Knott, as he will not only announce his college plans, but will also receive his Under Armour All-America Game jersey. Two days later, the nation's No. 5 cornerback and top-ranked player from the state of Mississippi is expecting to make a return to the field after having knee surgery over the summer. Before he officially begins his senior season, Knott said he wanted to solidify his college plans, which is why he'll choose from of seven schools.

Knott said Alabama, USC, Oregon, Florida State, Tennessee and in-state schools Mississippi State and Ole Miss are finalists when he makes his decision. He said he's going to use the last couple of weeks to do his own research and make an educated decision overall. "I know I'm going to be there for four years, so I want to be comfortable wherever I go," Knott said. "Wherever I'm comfortable is where I'm going to ball out. I want to be at a place where I know the coaches will do right for the players, and the players will do right for the program."

Knott is expected to be successful at the next level, as he has an athletic pedigree. His father, David Knott, spent time in the NFL, CFL and arena leagues after playing in the secondary at Ole Miss. His older brother, Chris Givens, is a wide receiver for the St. Louis Rams. Another brother, Nick Knott, played running back at Wake Forest, and his sister, Deja Givens, is a high jumper for the Mississippi State track and field team.

Knott recorded 112 tackles and 16 pass breakups as a junior. However, his athleticism has been his calling card. Knott ran the 40-yard dash in 4.3 seconds at The Opening in July. He also completed the 20-yard shuttle in 3.94 seconds, vertical jumped 46.5 inches and threw the power ball 39.5 feet.

I guess he's not going to miss the entire season after all.

From a guy on the LSURb regarding Greg Little:

quote:

i was at the Allen game Friday night(i live in Allen) and rumor was that Saban was in the pressbox(they were in DFW for Wisky game obviously).

3-4 bama players were on the sidelines and he was giving them black guy hugs and whats ups before and after the game

Not quite sure what a "black guy hug" is though.

Free Rashan Gary Article

It's kind of long but I found this part extremely interesting:

quote:

What also remains to be seen is where Gregory Little, a 5-star offensive tackle from Texas, ends up committing. Little, the No. 2 player in the country, and Gary have grown very close throughout their respective recruitments.

Coney didn’t mince her words when asked about the possibility of the two best players in the nation coming together.

“Wouldn’t that be great?,” Coney said laughing. “Greg and Rashan have become friends. They’ve been to camps together. I don’t know what Greg and Rashan talk about. They do speak often.”

JUCO RB Mark Thompson, who is committed to Florida, had this to say when asked what it would mean if Alabama were to extend him a committable offer:

quote:

“It’s another big SEC program like Florida,” Thompson said. “(They’re) ranked in the top five, it would only be my second SEC offer. Also, it’s a very good place for me being a JUCO guy. They could lose both backs (after this year).”

Would an offer from the Crimson Tide put pressure on Thompson’s UF commitment?

“All I will say is it’s a good spot for a running back to step into,” Thompson said.

He says he talks to Napier every week. He's scheduled to take an OV to Alabama on December 12th.

I really hope we offer/land this kid. He's a stud.

The Mind Of Mike is a scary place and often there is so much in that crammed space that the stream of consciousness can be nearly endless. So this year we decided to slow down that mind a bit and created the Three-Point Stance, Rivals.com National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell's thoughts three at a time.

Here's today's edition, led by a heated battle over his recent Farrell 50, plus a huge commitment for Auburn, a team doing historic work at defensive end.
