Jack West got an offer from UCLA today. His recruitment is really blowing up lately, and he isn't even a sophomore yet.

I know he's a fan of Alabama, but we need to get in there before he falls in love with another school.

Agreed. What's the worst case scenario? If he plateaus then we have another backup QB. It's not like he'd be any worse than Ely or McLeod.

ETA: Sorry, Funky

I'm attempting to piece together some info from the TAMU board on Griffin. I'll copy anything they post on it and put it here.

Derrick Griffin podsibilitu building a little steam. Enough that Hamm reported on it. No news on the staff side of things yet, but it could end up being a quick deal like the Keith ford transfer.

Would make '13 look even better

He went to a prep school, and then to Texas state. He was never on the football team roster, or on scholarship. Provided his own way to school thru the help of financial aid etc. he's apparently completed the necessary hours (27) with the required gpa (>2.0) that he could be eligible this fall.

He has been working out with APEX, so he's apparently ready to rock and roll.

Supposed to touch base sometime this week after the holiday weekend is over.

He's a monster. He has insane upside, and great hands. He does a great job of high pointing the ball. He's a physical specimen who blocks violently as well.

We wouldn't let him sign because he wasn't going to qualify. After signing day, he ended up signing a LOI with Miami. He didn't qualify and went to prep school. After prep school, he still didn't qualify.

He enrolled at Texas Southern, a 4-year FCS, last year. He did not play either football or basketball unless I'm mistaken.

This was posted May 24 by Nguyening on the TAMU board:

quote:

Billy is at a wedding and I spoke to him on the rumors that have surfaced today regarding Derrick Griffin, who announced on Twitter earlier that he was eligible to transfer and play immediately. Griffin has shown interest in transferring to A&M, but our sources have told us there are still significant academic hurdles and it is highly, highly unlikely he'll be at Texas A&M, especially this fall. Billy will continue to monitor the situation and when he gets a chance, I'm sure he'll expand on this situation.

Apparently this info came from a different mod than the previous one:

quote:

We never said it was highly likely going to happen and it may not. We don't know yet. However, for any outlet to say it's highly unlikely is WAY off. In fact, I know 100-percent that A&M is very interested and will look into it more this week.

Also, Griffin hasn't even sent his transcripts to A&M yet, Sumlin is at the Indy 500, Spav is on vacation too and there's been no investigating by the A&M staff into this situation with any detail so how could that possibly be ruled out already?

Just be patient. There will be no better source than this site for info on this situation.

Also posted on May 24:

quote:

With Sumlin's history of favoring secrecy, it wouldn't surprise me if TA was suppressing the story on purpose. Maybe to keep other suitors away?

I'm sure hamm is getting most of his info through Griffin, which would explain the more optimistic view point.

We should know quite a bit more in a week or so.

If anyone can take him, he'll be ours. He's indicated since declaring he's eligible that we would be his first choice still. I feel like he'll end up getting in, but not being eligible till '16...

May 25th post:

quote:

Reports made that Derrick Griffin's chances of transferring to Texas A&M are "highly unlikely" were made prematurely.

In fact, things continue to steadily progress between the Griffin party and the Aggie coaching staff.

According to a source close to the the former Rosenberg Terry dual-sport athlete,
Derrick sent his transcripts to the A&M coaches today and spoke to wide receivers coach Aaron Moorehead on the phone this morning.

The next step is for the A&M compliance department to look over Griffin's transcripts on Tuesday. As long as there are no major hold ups after reviewing his progress over the past year at TSU, the plan is for Griffin to come up to College Station and visit with the coaching staff later this week.

Wednesday was a date discussed between Griffin and the Aggie coaching staff earlier today but we will know for sure tomorrow.

By no means is this potential transfer for certain, but the notion that A&M is not interested in adding Griffin to their roster is false. Sources close to the situation have shared with GigEm247 that Kevin Sumlin's staff would love to add the 6-7 wide receiver if possible.

Again, Griffin has been in contact with A&M today and once his transcripts have been vetted through the compliance department his status will become more clear.

I tried to delete the mod wars portion of this post

quote:

What you want to hear about is Derrick Griffin and the chances that he's catching passes at Texas A&M this fall, or ever, for that matter. Through two sources that have been close to the former five-star receiver/basketball standout since he was in junior high, I followed his recruitment very closely, which is why I was the first to say that he was unlikely to make it to A&M. It's also why I was never convinced despite tweets to the contrary that he would end up at Miami out of high school.

Something else I learned while following Griffin's development, high school career and recruitment is that he's an incredibly kind and thoughtful young man. By all accounts, a great kid and, obviously, a tremendous athlete. As do all of you, I also know how badly he wanted to (and still wants to) play football at Texas A&M.

Yesterday, we called the chances of him playing at A&M highly unlikely and even more unlikely that it would be able to happen this fall. I'm still in the camp that believes we're talking about a significant longshot here but it's obviously something that the Aggies and every other major program will take a close look at to see if there's a shot to get him in.

There is positive buzz coming from the Griffin side of things but that's happened more than once through social media channels. I hope to hear that the wheels are in motion and that Derrick is likely to end up at A&M but I'd be lying if I said, based on what I've been gathering yesterday and today, that wouldn't qualify as quite the pleasant surprise.

personally, I hope our initial reports on this one turn out to have missed the mark because I know too many people close to Griffin that would love nothing more in life than to see him succeed and do so in Aggieland. If that's the case and we begin to hear differently, we'll report it as such without a moment's hesitation. More on Griffin as we hear it or if it appears anything is changing...

As far as Griffin goes, I checked with two more plugged-in sources who reinforced what I was told on Sunday evening. I know we'd all love to see it happen but, despite the fact that Derrick would love to play for TAMU (which was the case throughout high school all the way up until he signed with Miami and probably even since that time) it still looks like a tremendous longshot that it could ever happen. I don't expect the Aggies to simply throw this one away without at least digging in to see what's there but there is currently no real confidence that anything will materialize from those I'm talking to on multiple sides of this thing.
