His IMG Academy ties alone would be worth the hire IMO.

Anybody know anything about his QB teaching skills? I know he did that for a while and then obviously was in LA with the Rams.
While the recruiting angle is great (and a nice replacement for what we all assume will be less knowledge and responsibility in it from DeBoll), I really hope he's a good QB teacher.

He won the hiesman and was an NFL QB coach so he's gotta be better than average at sculpting QBs.

Doesn't mean shite when it comes to coaching QBs.

He was a NFL QB for 6 season. He was a private QB tutor at IMG for NFL QBs. And has two years as a NFL QB coach with the Rams.

Yea - the private QB tutor stuff was what I remembered the most about him outside of the most recent Rams stuff.
Sounds like a great fit and exactly what we all were hoping for (a legitimate QB coach who could teach the fundamentals of the position).
My assumption is he is the new on field coach in waiting when they pass the new legislation, correct?

Best I remember, Weinke, a high school AA qb, initially committed to Alabama, but then signed with FSU because they would allow him to play football and baseball, but then was drafted to play baseball though he never made the major leagues.
So it took a while, but he winds up at Alabama after all.

Former Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke joining Alabama staff | AL.com

Former Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke is joining Alabama's staff as an offensive analyst, he confirmed to 247Sports' Josh Newberg.
The 44-year old was the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams' quarterbacks coach the last two years after five years as the head coach at IMG Academy in Florida, where he coached Crimson Tide star running back Bo Scarbrough.
Weinke is the oldest player to ever win the Heisman, winning it as a 28-year old senior at Florida State in 2000.
A 2001 fourth-round pick of the Carolina Panthers, Weinke played seven years in the NFL, six for the Panthers (2001-06) and one for the San Francisco 49ers (2007).
Coincidentally, Weinke's first game as a member of the Alabama staff is against Florida State.

Report: Alabama hires former Heisman QB Chris Weinke as offensive analyst | SEC Country
quote:
According to a report from John Brice, which was later confirmed by Aaron Suttles of TideSports.com, the Crimson Tide has added former Florida State QB Chris Weinke to its coaching staff.
The former Heisman Trophy winner will reportedly serve as an offensive analyst under new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.
Weinke last served as a quarterbacks coach for the NFL’s Rams, and has coached at powerhouse high school football factory IMG Academy in the past.
The Crimson Tide had previously tabbed another former Florida State QB, Clint Trickett, as an offensive analyst. But he ultimately chose to take a spot on Lane Kiffin’s new coaching staff at Florida Atlantic.

I think you're correct. I was thinking Dan Werner was probably going to be hired for that. Instead, it looks like Weinke will become the QB "whisper" coach, which makes more sense. Weinke has solid credentials for the job. Werner does too, but is more of an an OC-level coach. I like this hire.

Weinke can't actually coach Hurts, can he? I didn't think Analysts could do that.
Posted on 3/1/17 at 6:06 pm to alabamabuckeye
They are probably waiting on the 10th assistant coach to be approved and will promote him then.

Right. They can't. It would be nice if Weinke could coach the QBs during spring practice, but he won't be able to directly coach players until the 10th coach spot is approved by the NCAA. Hopefully, that'll happen in April, instead of being delayed.

One of the greatest uses of these "analysts" are that unlike onfield coaches, they can and do work with the kids during voluntary summer workouts. It's huge.

I did not know that. It's very huge!
