And here comes the exodus. If you didn’t, go back and watch some of the FSU vs Oklahoma series for the natty. All of those girls on the field looked the same to me: solid, athletic looking ladies who still looked feminine but looked muscular and developed and well sculpted. Not a fattie in the bunch.

And it showed at the plate; good cuts with a lot of good contact and some balls driven out of the park. None of this slap hitting bullshite, and trying to artificially manufacture runs. They swung the bat to get on base and they swung the bat to advance them. Of course there was the occasional strategic bunt attempt to advance a runner but it was NOT a given when someone got on board the bases. Totally different approach to softball that was confident and aggressive, not tentative.

Both coaches knew they were facing the best pitchers in the country. Did it alter their approach? Not much, because the hitting was just as high quality as the pitching. They swung away. We all know Oklahoma is a machine but I would rate Kat Sandercock of FSU as the #2 pitcher in the country this year right behind Montana. She was mowing down OU batters in game 2 when the BOTTOM half of the order came up for OU and they rocked Sandercock for back to back homers that put the game away.

That is the difference between Alabama softball and the elite teams now; Alabama has one or two girls that can hit and a bunch of girls that Murphy tries to steal a hit with by slapping or bunting the ball. And if any of our girls has seen an S&C program or a dietary program, it doesn’t show. Murphy is treating Alabama softball as a high level club sport similar to the hockey club. His tenure needs to end and the sooner the better.

My first call would be to Jennifer Rocha, assistant head coach for OU and my second would be to JT Gasso, Pattie Gasso’s son and assistant coach (and hitting coach!) for the Sooners. Maybe one of them wants to have their own program to challenge OU. Pattie isn’t going anywhere anytime soon so why not build your resume with your own squad? Regardless, Murphy’s gotta go, if for no other reason than for fresh blood and a jolt to the program.

AJ Daugherty for me. It's only a matter of time before he's the best coach in the state of Alabama by a wide margin.

He better make some changes to his entire coaching philosophy.

HIRE A HITTING COACH IMMEDIATELY.

As much as we fans want a change there is no way in Hades Greg will make a change at HC after making the world series. And Murph has already said he was going to hire a hitting coach. So unless he surprises the world that will be it for the SB changes.

Montana Fouts Wins 2023 Honda Sport Award for Softball

Fouts is the first Alabama softball player to win the prestigious award

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – For the first time in program history, an Alabama softball player has won the Honda Sport Award as Montana Fouts was named this year's softball recipient from the Collegiate Women's Sports Awards.

The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 47 years to the top women athletes across 12 NCAA-sanctioned sports, signifying "the best of the best" in college athletics. The winners of this year's sport awards become finalists for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2023 Honda Cup, which will be presented live on CBS Sports Network on June 26 at 4:30 p.m. CT.

"I am so honored to be the recipient of this year's Honda Sport Award," Fouts said. "I want to thank the committee who chose me to represent the sport of softball and express how grateful I am to be chosen. I certainly wouldn't be where I am today without my amazing support system. I want to thank Coach Murphy and the rest of our coaching and support staff for allowing me to live out my dream and creating this family for me the past five years that will have a piece of my heart forever. I would like to thank my family for all of the sacrifices they have made along the way to allow me to play the sport I love while being my rock. To my teammates who have my back on and off the field and made me fall in love with softball all over again, they are the real rockstars. I am so grateful for this platform softball has given me and I am honored to represent my home, The University of Alabama. Giving God all of the glory, Roll Tide."

Fouts is the ninth of 12 nominees announced so far this year, joining Rose Zhang (Golf, Stanford) Trinity Thomas (Gymnastics, Florida), Caitlin Clark (Basketball, Iowa), Kate Douglass (Swimming and Diving, Virginia), Logan Eggleston (Texas, Volleyball), Erin Matson (Field Hockey, North Carolina), Lilly Reale (Soccer, UCLA) and Katelyn Tuohy (Cross Country, NC State). Honorees have yet to be announced for lacrosse, tennis and track and field. The 12 nominees will be narrowed to a top three, with the eventual Honda Cup winner coming from that group of three.

The Honda Sport Award is the 12th for Alabama, but its first for softball. Previous Crimson Tide Honda Sport Award winners include cross country runner Mercy Chelangat (2021), gymnasts Penney Hauschild (1985-86), Dee Foster (1993), Andree Pickens (2002), Jeana Rice (2004), Ashley Miles (2006), Kayla Hoffman (2011) and Kim Jacob (2014) along with golfers Brooke Pancake (2012) and Emma Talley (2015). Jacob would go on and earn Alabama's first Honda Cup in 2014.

Rule change proposals (ncaa.org):

Softball pitchers may be able to disengage from the playing surface while delivering a pitch

Rules committee also recommends simplifying obstruction rule

Kinda like they do now

They could literally call it a 100 times a game . The WCWS kind of brought it back in the spotlight with a few issues this year

Murph is really gonna try to replace Fouts with a few transfers and do nothing to address the black hole that is our offense.

Sophomore Pitcher Alea Johnson to Join Alabama Softball

The Fairhope, Ala., native went 7-1 with a 1.41 ERA in 2023 as a freshman at LSU

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama softball added another key piece to its bullpen, welcoming sophomore pitcher Alea Johnson to the Crimson Tide roster.

Johnson made 12 appearances in her 2023 freshman season at LSU, including seven starts, posting a 7-1 record and 1.41 ERA. She threw the final 2.0 innings in the Tigers' matchup against national champion Oklahoma, retiring each of the six Sooners she faced.

A native of Fairhope, Ala., she was a two-time 7A Pitcher of the Year at Fairhope High School and played club softball with the Birmingham Thunderbolts, winning the 2022 PGF 18U Championship alongside current Tide teammates Kenleigh Cahalan, Marlie Giles and Larissa Preuitt. Johnson was ranked No. 23 in her signing class by Softball America and was tied for seventh in the Extra Inning Softball rankings.

Johnson is the fifth newcomer on the current 2024 Crimson Tide roster, alongside fifth-year transfer pitcher Kayla Beaver, junior college transfer infielder Kendal Clark, freshman pitcher Jocelyn Briski and freshman outfielder Lauren Johnson.

From Alea Johnson
"I am so grateful to have the opportunity to play for Alabama with this talented team. I can't wait to grow on and off the field with such an amazing program. I am so excited to start my journey with the Crimson Tide!"

From Alabama Head Coach Patrick Murphy
"We are very excited to welcome Alea to our Alabama softball family. Our visit with her and her parents was terrific. With three senior pitchers this upcoming season, we really needed a sophomore in the circle as well. I believe she has the potential to follow in the footsteps of the many dominant pitchers in our program's history."
