The trolling is intense. But they'd be trolling just as hard, unless we hired Phil Jackson. If Marshall came, they'd say he isn't proven at a p5, and is a bad recruiter.

Avery is no doubt a gamble. But the rewards could be huge. But we are talking about a guy who won NBA coach of the year, and led the mavericks to a 67 win season. The guy knows basketball. And with him having full roster control and less egos than the NBA, it seems like he's better suited for college.

I basically have up on Bama basketball once they didn't fire Grant last season. It's hard to watch your favorite team play, when you kinda want them to lose. But my passion had been reignited with this hire. We could have went with a up and coming mid major coach, but that's really just as big of gamble. Avery will bring more attention and excitement to the Bama program than any coach we've had since I've been a basketball fan.

That should be enough for the transition and Bama connection. Hopefully AJ is allowed and will go out and get guys he knows and trust to fill out his staff.

Been out of pocket for most of the weekend so I haven't commented but I really like the hire.

No, it isn't a slam dunk hire but its out of the box. That's something Alabama Basketball hasn't done since I can remember.

Round it out with Philip Pearson, T.R. Dunn and call it a day.

I don't think there really was a slam dunk available to us this year. We tried everything with Marshall, and were willing to overpay for someone with his resume, compared to other elite coaches. To give him more than Izzo or Donovan is crazy, but made sense in the situation.

It's unconventional. But I can't think of anyone realistic that would've have been a more desirable hire. Not all coaches want to risk lowering their stock by taking a rebuilding job at a school with huge resources and dedication, but average prestige.

That would be an awesome coaching staff. That would give us great recruiting connections in Texas, Alabama, and Georgia/ATL.

I'm hoping we're as open to opening up the check book for the basketball staff, as we're the football staff. Does anyone know how many basketball coaches we're allowed to have?

They should also go get Felix. He can teach them how to throw full-court passes like a pro.

I'll pass on Dunn this go around. Prefer more college experience given the circumstances.

He hasn't coaches in a couple if years, but it wouldn't surprise me to see a guy like Mario Elie hired onto the staff.

He's another Don Nelson guy, and coached under Avery in Brooklyn. I haven't seen anything since he left the Nets. Though he's wife a news anchor in Houston, so maybe she's bringing home the bacon now.

They also have triplets. I could see taking some time off for your rich and have kids.

Thanks. I'm glad to know we can have someone dedicated to recruiting. With his connections, I'm sure AJ will hire someone legit.

Knowing that, I'd be glad to get someone known for great defensive coaching. It seems like AJ could us a bench spot on a nba defensive specialist. As long as Battle is truly putting Kentucky level resources at the basketball program.

Avery just went thru the recruiting process with his son. Sure its on the other side of the process, but he's not new to it.

I say we don't tell him about college having a longer shot clock. Let him think it stays at 24 seconds. We'll never have a shot clock violation again.

I just cant wait to see us actually have an inbounds play with a chance to score off of it.

I love this hire. As others have said, of course it is when I stop watching TD 24/7 that this happens. Reading the article about his coaching philosophy from the other thread, I like his "attack" philosophy. I don't want a coach who is just going to react and is going to coach players to "react". I feel like this is an aggressive hire and CAJ will get in there and be aggressive in recruiting and coaching.
