I don't see how jalen can improve accuracy that much.

I don't think there is a reason to assume he won't improve. Countless examples of QBs improving particularly when they are only 18. Most of the time you don't get to see the rawness that most true freshmen QBs have because they don't have to play. Jalen did so we saw it front and center.

Why can't he improve though? Why wouldn't he get better at reading defense with age and experience? Reading defenses is a big part of accuracy. Late throws and throws with lack of confidence that you are seeing things correctly is a huge part of accuracy problems. Sure he also has some mechanical issues to correct and often those get so locked in they are hard to change without negatively impacting the QB's natural game. He may not ever become a a guy who can stand in the pocket and throw darts all over the field, but I think it is more likely than not that he will improve substantially as a passer.

I've given my observations about the situation for half the season or thereabout, so all I'll say right now is that I surely do miss having a balanced offense to make the opponents defend the entire field, run and pass.

The SEC was bad this year so we won in spite of it, but the lack of an efficient passing game was nearly bound to catch up to us against better teams. No, the pass defense didn't play well, but the fact the offense couldn't sustain drives left the defense on the field way too long, which wore on them, and gave Clemson way too many opportunities.

I hope it's better next year. I think it will be but I realize it could be not.

We finished the second half of the season with a true freshman qb that played against top defense including Auburn, LSU, and then 3 championship games in Florida, Washington, and Clemson. How many qb's play that many top defense by the end of their JR year?

I'll use Dak as an example since they are similar build and size out of HS. Take a look at his Sophmore stats compared to Hurts FRESHMAN stats. I know he did not have the same tools around him but he also didn't play in an SEC champ game, semi, and NC game.

CFPstats Dak

CFPStats Jalen

I think the doubting of Hurts is getting stale. He has had one of the better season for a TF QB.

We need to improve passing. I don't know if I would say it's a bad situation. I'd expect a young QB to improve in this area. Sark needs to figure out how to make use of maybe the best all-around group of WRs this program has had at one time. I don't think you need a great QB to do that, but you need one who has a better grasp of things than we had this year. I have confidence in Jalen to put in the work and Sark to help bring him along.

I'm not counting on Tua to do much. It's just not realistic to expect a freshman QB to come in an light the world on fire. He's going to have growing pains, just like Jalen. Maybe he'll surprise, but I wouldn't count on it happening.

No. Hurts will be better next year. I mean the guy win SEC offensive poy as a true freshman and he's got an arm. Why are we surprised he struggled reading defenses as a true freshman?

Jalen regressed this year

Jalen was a freshman. The DC's he went up against were shooting at a target they did not yet understand. As the year moved on the good DC's we faced the last several games (starting with LSU) had film and began to copy the success moments other had experienced. Just like a new pitcher in MLB, the first time thur the batting order they are all world, Deeper in the season you have a map of their tools and their weaknesses. Clemson used the map. Slant the D-line shutting down cutback lanes -Bo was the answer with power to break thru the slants - Bo went out. Crowd the line at the edges - shuts down the Harris bounce. Bring the DB's up to crowd the short passing lanes - Clemson had the talent to do this and Jalen does not yet have the seasoning to calmly go to the 3rd WR dragging behind the tight coverage. Our WR's did not adjust route well largely because - what's the use - Jalen does not adjust well after his first (and maybe second) option is shut down. So Jalen tucks to run but the edge was crowded. The one time he broke it for a TD he went up the middle rather than running to the crowded edge.

All of this can be fixed with a little more seasoning at QB.Off-season film-room time with Sark and then application in the spring and summer.

Jalen/Tua discussion aside, I'm ready for stability at that position. I feel like that has been a problem. It's silly to say because we've had so much success but it's hard to form an offensive identity when the QB is experiencing things for the first time or is fighting for the job. We had a nice little groove with JPW-GMac-AJ, then we sort of ran out of heir apparents at that position due to a number of factors.

Not saying I want the boring game manager back or that I think the backup should always replace the starter once the starter leaves. I'm just ready for some consistency at the position.

Coker was much maligned but that was crap....he had a lot of experience at this level in the position and a year in Bama's system and it paid a dividend. Inexperienced guys like Sims and Hurts cost us against OSU and Clemson.
