Potential HCs always have to show a hypothetical staff to suitors, and I'm sure he had Kiffin penciled in as OC.
It's possible at the end of the day, but it doesn't make too much sense to make a lateral job. I doubt Kiffin would be there more than a year, taking it for a year as a favor to a friend.

Kiffin leaves it will be for a HC job somewhere. Houston I assume will have him on the short list but the team I would keep an eye is is Oregon. I believe their coach may be gone and Kiffin may be a great fit for them.
