ESPN's Mid-Season All-American Team

quote:

Quarterback

Trevone Boykin, TCU
Seth Russell and Baylor have been more prolific, but TCU's first-half schedule has had a little more meat on it. Do I sound like the playoff selection committee?

Running back

Leonard Fournette, LSU
An NFL scout said Fournette could start for "all but six or seven NFL teams."

Dalvin Cook, Florida State
Imagine how good he'd be with two hamstrings.

Tackle

Spencer Drango, Baylor
Smart (Campbell Trophy semifinalist), durable (41 starts and counting) and, by the way, he can block, too.

Taylor Decker, Ohio State
Another durable veteran and leader, no matter who the quarterback is.

Guard

Josh Garnett, Stanford
Big, athletic senior; get out of his way when he pulls to make room for McCaffrey.

Dan Feeney, Indiana
Linchpin of the most efficient, effective offense in the Big Ten.

Center

Ethan Pocic, LSU
Locker-room nickname is "Mensa" because of his intelligence. Unusually big (6-foot-7, 301 pounds) for a center.

Wide receiver

Josh Doctson, TCU
Like Fournette, has a season's worth of stats at the halfway point.

Corey Coleman, Baylor
Already has 16 touchdown catches, and averages more than 21 yards per catch.

Will Fuller, Notre Dame
Nearly 22 yards per catch. Stretches the field for tailback C.J. Prosise (922 yards).

Defensive line

Robert Nkemdiche, Ole Miss
Memphis game changed when No. 5 went out with a concussion. Two-way star got hurt carrying the ball.

Shaq Lawson, Clemson
Has been nearly unblockable for one of the best defenses in the nation.

Myles Garrett, Texas A&M
So big, so fast. Gave young Alabama star left tackle Cam Robinson all he could handle.

Carl Nassib, Penn State
Leads FBS in sacks (11.5) and tackles for loss (16.5)

Linebacker

Joe Schobert, Wisconsin
Judging by his tackles and sacks, he spends a lot of time behind the line of scrimmage.

Blake Martinez, Stanford
Latest in a long line of Cardinal disrupters. Uncanny instinct for where the play is going.

Reggie Ragland, Alabama
Don't watch the ball, watch him. You'll find out where the ball is soon enough.

Cornerback

Vernon Hargreaves III, Florida
He must get bored. No one ever throws on his side of the field.

Jourdan Lewis, Michigan
Lockdown corner on a suffocating defense.

Safety

Vonn Bell, Ohio St.
Defensive backfield sheriff who scored a TD (fumble) in the Hawaii game, which is more than you can say for Hawaii.

Jeremy Cash, Duke
Leads the ACC with 11.5 tackles behind the line -- as a defensive back.

Kicker

Ross Martin, Duke
A big reason the Blue Devils have been winning tight games -- he's 12-of-12 on field goals.

Punter

Michael Carrizosa, San Jose State
Leads the FBS with an average of 50.2 yards per punt, and the Spartans are second in net punting (45.0 YPP).

All-purpose

Christian McCaffrey, Stanford
There have been six 300-yard all-purpose games in the FBS this season. McCaffrey has two of them.

10 Crucial 2nd Half Games for the CFP

quote:

Meet me halfway?

Good. We're here. Welcome to the midpoint of the season, where the best is yet to come. The College Football Playoff selection committee will reveal its first of six weekly rankings Nov. 3, and the final Top 25 will be revealed on ESPN on Dec. 6. There are plenty of crucial games remaining that will shape the committee's thoughts, but this narrows it down to 10 of the most important, listed in chronological order:

quote:

LSU at Alabama, Nov. 7

LSU is the only undefeated team remaining in the SEC and has a one-game lead in the conference standings, but ESPN's Football Power Index projects the Tigers to have the toughest remaining schedule, with games at Alabama and Ole Miss. Alabama has looked the part of a playoff contender since its loss to Ole Miss, making this game one that is likely to determine the SEC West division.

CBS Sports Week 8 Odds/Picks

quote:

Tennessee at Alabama (-15.5): Let's get something out of the way before my pick. I love what Alabama is doing right now. Road wins against Georgia and Texas A&M have the Crimson Tide, even with a loss already, looking like one of the strongest teams in the SEC West once again. As long as Derrick Henry is running the ball and that ferocious defense is eating, there is no one in the country I'd take against the Tide ... on a neutral field.

Alabama has not covered a single spread in Bryant-Denny Stadium this season and Joshua Dobbs is coming off a career-best performance with a bye week to prepare for the Tide. Alabama looks great, but trends point to the double-digit road dog, especially when it's Butch Jones' young and feisty bunch looking to build on a big win. Pick: Vols +15.5

CBS Sports SEC Power Rankings

quote:

2. Alabama Crimson Tide (1): Far be it from me to criticize my CBS Sports colleagues' selections, and certainly no disrespect to the other outstanding linebackers on our Midseason All-America team, but not having Reggie Ragland on said Midseason All-America team feels like finding out the bluegrass festival you've bought tickets to has decided to prohibit the use of banjos. Something just kinda feels ... missing.

As for the Tide's drop out of the top spot after blowing out a previously undefeated top-10 team on the road, that they have a loss and LSU doesn't matters a bit more when that loss came at home to a team that failed to give Memphis as many problems as USF or Bowling Green did.
