Murphy must tell his hitters not to swing at the first pitch. The hitters are just looking at perfect right down the middle first pitches.
Then they swing at pitches in the dirt.

So dumb to fall behind 0-1 most of the time by watching easy to hit balls go by.

Murphy's teams have been doing that for years. I can count on one hand the times I've seen them swing at a first pitch. And like you said, it's DUMB! Especially when SEC opponents have figured it out and throw strike one right down broadway.

The good news is that Bama has a 7-2 home SEC record so far this year.

However, the 2nd home run doesn't count because the player didn't touch home plate.

I got a rule interpretation on this, because I was curious and I'm a softball umpire. I talked to a B12 umpire and this is a summary of what he said. He had to ask as well because he hadn't come across a situation that was exactly like that one.

As the play was called the batter should have been safe. The ball had not been put back into play yet, therefore no appeal could be made. Also, the batter did not make it back to the dugout before turning around to touch home plate. The game is still in a dead ball state until the next play begins. ie. with the pitcher toeing the rubber.

It may not have mattered anyway. However, hopefully it will keep them from celebrating too much rather than touching home plate in the future.

So the run should have counted. Bama lost that game by a run, the umpires might have cost them the game.

Still, it is the players job to touch home plate. The teamates celebrating with the batter should not crowd home plate. They need to keep a few feet away from it.

Those technicalities suck regardless, such as a dropped strike out, and this situation among others... That batter struck out and should be out.. She hit it over the wall, hr counts whether she tags all the bases or none.

They might have. We'll never know with the way we've been hitting lately. I asked this B12 ump as soon as it happened and he agreed with the SEC ump, that the out was applied correctly. He was curious too so he checked an interpretation with one of their schedulers/rules experts and she said that it was applied wrongly.

I have played/officiated for 30+ years and I have never seen that on a HR. Now I will watch for it every time a homerun is hit. Sometimes it takes something bizarre like that to happen to get the future calls right. We prepare for so many bizarre situations that never happen, then something like this happens and it makes us look like we don't prepare at all.

We, as Bama fans are pissed that this happened. But as an ump myself, I feel bad for the guy. They try to cover everything, but it's impossible. I guarantee the next HR she hits, she'll make sure to touch 'em all and the next time this guy umps a game, he'll make sure that all of the appeals are applied properly and not let that happen again.
