Former NFL RB Joe McKnight was murdered during a road rage shooting in New Orleans on Thursday afternoon. Per TMZ...

The incident occurred at 2:43 PM. Family members identified the 28-year-old at the scene.

A witness told NOLA.com ... she saw McKnight trying to apologize to another man after some sort of traffic incident.

The witness says the man then pulled out a gun and shot McKnight -- and while standing over him screamed, "I told you not to f*** with me" ... then fired another shot into his body.

Cops say they have detained a man they believe to be the shooter -- 54-year-old Ronald Gasser.
Cops say McKnight did NOT have a gun at the time of the shooting.

if they released him with no charges they believe it was self-defense, if McKnight chased him down and got out of his car and approached him in an aggressive manor, well, its hard to blame the guy in this day and age. Most states have the castle doctrine, which applies to your vehicle as well. You have the right to defense yourself as you should.. very tragic..

Also, I am not saying that the entire incident was motivated by race. People I spoke standing around the scene said what they "heard". I was there after the words and shooting happened, but no one gets anything out of adding context to the murder of another. I could go into more detail, but this would be a very long post.

This happened minutes from my home, the murderer didn't take race out of the equation when he spoke racial slurs over McKnight's body after shooting him 3 times. His thoughts and actions spoke very clearly.

That's tragic and sad to hear. It Seems this is way too common in New Orleans now. Just to add something, he was a great high school player and did well in college and got his shot in the pros. I remember being pissed that LSU missed on him and he went to USC. RIP.
