Awesome stuff. The flag at the time only had 48 stars as Alaska and Hawaii weren't states yet.

I thought that the blue field of stars was supposed to face forward.

The blue field of stars, if displaying a flag this way, should always be to the observers left. The flag is worn on the combat uniform "backwards" to give the appearance of moving forward. They should have put it on this uniform like worn by Soldiers.
