Makers is good for mixing. Not much for sipping when you consider your other options. And honestly for the price range, I like Jim Beam Black Label better.

Woodford is good as is Four Roses. Basil Hayden is light and spicy (a good spring/summer bourbon).

Obviously Blantons and Pappy Van Winkle are top notch but you're going to pay for the quality.

If you like bourbon you might want to try some of the ryes that are out right now too.

Woodford Reserve all day, every day. Eagle Rare single barrel is pretty good too. Blanton's is tGOAT though. You might end up dishing out $60 for a fifth of that, however.

If he got Elmer T Lee it wouldn't be a contest. But Buffalo Trace will win, agreed.

I'd say all three are good. McCallan and Glenlivet are pretty good too, but you say you don't like Scotch.

Honestly, if you are mixing your whiskey with something, you might as well get Evan Williams Green label. It isn't bad and is certainly cheap. Mixing with coke kills all of the flavors that distinguish them for me.

Just afraid it went from sipping whiskey to guzzling it after last nights game and he won't remember which one he liked the best.

Haha it almost went to that. I think I made my gf lose a few friends last night... I was in rare form and some of her snobbier "I'm in law school" friends didn't appreciate it.. Oh well frick it... Anyway an update: just for drinking on the rocks I liked the woodford and buffalo more (buffalo winning).. Knob creek had just a little too much bite for me (Maybe I'm a pussy).. I appreciate the advice and I'm trying Elmer T next don't worry

ETA: i went to two different liquor stores and couldn't find eagle rare or pappy... One of the guys told me you can't buy eagle rare in MS anymore

If you like lighter, try Basil Hayden the next time around. Doesn't quite have the bite but has a good spice too it.

ETA: Pappy is probably at the height of it's popularity right now and as a result is a little harder to find.
