Can't remember the details of that season, but I never thought of them as SEC champion caliber. They backed into that game. The worst part was the Fulmer extension that followed which lead to Hamilton wanting to go cheap on the next two hires.

2007 UT beat Vandy by 1 point. beat Kentucky by 2 points in 4 OT.

I'm not "loving" on them, but I think it's ridiculous to say that they were incredibly bad.

Great pro, but we are talking college, no? I understand he has the Vols rushing record, I think. But my understanding of Vol football leads me to believe he took it from Gerald Riggs Jr. and they both only held it because the studs from UT-k left early.
Foster has more yards than everyone probably because he has more carries than anyone.
Again, I will defer to the vol fans if this is completely off base.
You aren't wrong. He just didn't do much in college because of his supporting cast and coaching.

I agree. Good thing I didn't say that.

I don't think the extension had much effect on anything, to be honest.

The best player, and I guess there could be some debate here, was Britton Colquitt.
Jerod Mayo and Eric Berry were the best two players on that team by a wide margin. Both top 7 picks in the draft.
The offensive line was probably the best in the nation, too, production wise.

Beat South Carolina in overtime and were lucky to even get there. He very well may have been fired that season if not for a couple things here and there.

and 5 losses UT had over a 4 year period (95-98) have never been repeated in the SEC.
I know who was responsible for 3 of those.

Good call on Berry. Probably in terms of respect at their positions, I'd go Berry, Mayo, and Colquitt.

You said they were "incredibly bad, by SEC East standards." Certainly no worse than 2010 SC.

If you are going to quote it, you should get it right.
For honesty's sake:

That team was incredibly bad, by SEC East winning standards, but the coaching job that year was tremendous in my opinion.
In terms of teams that won the East, I would take virtually any of them over the 2007 Vols. Lattimore and non-fat Alshon Jeffrey? Yes, please.

There were 4 players off that defense drafted in the 1st round at some point.
Mayo was the best LB in the SEC in 2007 and Berry was the best DB.
Defensively they were plenty talented enough.
They had 2 NFL running backs, a solid college QB, and a very good OL.
Certainly better than 2010 SC imo.

We wouldn't have the Fulmer Cup without him either. That's hof worthy by itself.

All fair points. I'd take every other East winning UT team over them. Every UF team over them. Every UGA team over them, except maybe this past years because the schedule makes it hard to tell how good they were.
I'd say 2010 USCe 2007 UT-k and 2011 UGA are the bottom three, which is no big deal, because, hey, they still won the East.
