LSU head coach Ed Orgeron said Thursday that junior college transfer defensive tackle Travonte Valentine has been moved to third-team behind junior Greg Gilmore and true freshman Ed Alexander. Per The Advocate:
quote:

Alexander, a highly touted rookie out of St. Thomas Aquinas, played several series in the win over Southern Miss while coaches purposely sat junior college transfer Travonte Valentine. Valentine did not practice well enough leading up to the win over the Golden Eagles, and he's still behind, Orgeron said.

“He’s a little bit behind in his technique," the coach said. "Ed Alexander is ahead of him. Right now, he’s on the third team. A lot of times, the third-team guys don’t get a lot of reps. If so, he may get some reps, but I see (starter) Greg Gilmore and Ed Alexander getting more reps than him.”

That is what happens when you talk back to your legendary DL coach.

How the hell did we see it so different than Jenkins? Old coaches said he was unblock able. I guess when you only went half arse at practice it wasn't noticed when we were there for 100 plays

Makes you wonder if TV was brought back solely by miles and O didn't necessarily sign off on that.

Gilmore was made to look like a bitch by Southern Miss, so Valentine must be a real PoS to be passed up by him. Hope Big Ed takes over the first team spot for good sooner rather than later.

I agree. He has been getting blown up all year. Don't know why he still gets the start, but I am guessing it's due to experienced depth issues. Big ed should have that spot by the Arkansas game. It would be sooner, but starting a TF against bama is not ideal

As bad as Gilmore looks out there I have trouble believing it's about anything other than bad practice habits.

What does he and Jenkins know about D linemen? The Rant already told me Valentine was a beast.

Yep. Then the same guys are surprised when we play teams that match our skill.

Valentine looked real solid game 1. So this is not about game play.

Valentine probably has some bad habits that he's having trouble shaking. He's been relying on pure strength so his technique isn't where the coaching staff wants it to be. That doesn't make him a PoS. They're just coaching him up. They may see how much of a force he can truly be with the proper technique. They just want Valentine to see it too.

Coach O is taking a completely different approach than Miles on handling player discipline and depth chart. He's made it clear to public that if you don't put in the work and give it all in practice, you ain't gonna play. That should serve as a smack to the butt for all the entitled starters. Love it!

Why does O feel the need to make this a public issue? He can discipline any way he feels is needed but I don't know if making this a situation that should be discussed outside the team.

Maybe the coach feels the internal discipline hasn't worked, so he's hoping a public statement will work with TV. Different players react differently.

he is doing the opposite of what the last coach did to right the ship and keep the job. More transparency within the program.

Who is the "he" you are referring to? Ed A obviously played. Valentine did NOT.
