For 1964, while Alabama was declared the AP Poll Champion (poll taken BEFORE the bowl game which the Tide lost), Arkansas was declared the UPI Poll Champion (poll also taken before the bowl game which Arkansas won).
Arkansas' lone week at #1 in the AP Poll was on October 18, 1965. They defeated previously #1 Texas, 27-24, but fell to #2 the following week despite winning the following week, 55-20, over North Texas. Strange voting by the pollsters there, for sure.
Arkansas (UPI) and Alabama (AP) share the 1964 national title along with Notre Dame and Michigan (ranked #1 by other polls/rating services).
Arkansas was not UPI champion. Alabama was also UPI champion. Arkansas was Football Writer's Champion... which was the only poll that was taken after the bowl games at the time.

22 consecutive wins and a national championship, but only one week at #1 in the fricky AP.

Bama fan thinks it’s somehow about him. Seek help. You have the entireSEC office, referees, local police force, ncaa office, review officials, media etc all paving the way for Bama. You have the best player from every state while the rest of us use our own state. Your rankings are tainted. But anyway, yeah back to the subject of my post Western teams > East.
Melt score….10/10

Dumb me.....you're correct. Arkansas was the FWAA champion and Alabama was both the AP & UPI champs. Arkansas finished #2 in both of those final polls. I knew this and I can't believe myself for messing this up. Thanks for your correction.

Does it bother you that Arkansas historically has a better program than Gay&M?

Dumb you. That's only one example among so very many about which you are wrong. Sometimes you just hrow feces against the wall to see what sticks.

The thing about accumulating weeks in AP #1 is that you have to be great with that bullseye on your back. Some teams get to number 1 and just can't handle the heat. BAMA has had to perform with all the expectations in the world every time they stepped on the field. That was a big part of Coach Saban's genius.

And lucky us....we have you to be the one sniffing for the feces that's sticking on wall!

This stat is a little bit flawed, but I don't really know how to fix it.
For example, 2005 USC & 2005 Texas
USC was #1 all year (14 weeks at #1)
Texas was #2 all year (1 week at #1 (after Rose Bowl)
So for purposes of this stat, USC would appear as way superior to Texas if you just looked at that one year by itself. 14-1
But in this case.. Texas beat them.
A similar thing happened in 2009
Florida was #1 almost the whole season (12 weeks)
Alabama was #1 for a random week mid-year then beat Florida in the SEC game (3 weeks total)
Texas sat at #2 or #3 all year without losing a game. Had they beaten Alabama, it would have been the same as 2005. (0 weeks)
So those 2 years combined..
USC 14
Florida 12
Alabama 3
Texas 1
Combined, Texas was by far the best team over those 2 years.. but they are the worst team (of the 4 teams listed) using this stat.
It's a cool stat either way, but it doesn't paint the whole picture.

It isn't counting national championships or win percentage.
It is counting a human poll which is 97% perception and 3% tv ratings.
You are smart enough to know this and to accept the stat for what it is and isnt.
