Yesterday Chuck Oliver said that UGA seemed to be using its NIL money primarily to induce recruited players to stay, as opposed to using it to pay incoming transfers. It's like "here's what our WR's get" or "here's what our RB's get" and the player decides to come or not.

I have no idea how accurate this is but it makes a lot of sense to me. I've never understood how players that come in and get a certain amount and bust their arse are ok with some transfer coming in because they were promised a pile of cash. I also don't really understand who actually makes those decisions.

So what does the Rant think: spend your money on the players you have so they don't leave, or use it to fill gaps when a stud goes into the portal? I know you can theoretically do both, but you have to decide which is more important FWIW, I have no idea how Bama does it.

Depends on your needs. If you recruit 22 4 and 5 stars, then you're probably more inclined to focus on getting that group to stay as opposed to if you recruit 20 three stars and the only way to get top end talent is to catch disenfranchised former 4, 5 star recruits from other programs.

I'd say it depends on the school. Bama. UGA, and a few others are the schools that are recruiting mostly 4 and 5 star players out of HS. It would stand to reason that they are wanting to hold on to 5 star players as opposed to some lower tier schools trying to hold on to 2 and 3 star guys so we'll go to greater lengths to keep a 5 star player in the fold. If he leaves, its harder to find a player of his caliber to replace him. If a school loses a 3 star guy, its alot easier to find another 3 star guy to come in and take his place.

Players being offered before being on campus should be an easy violation. Especially if the school and coaches are involved.

Maybe you can't limit the kids, but you can sure as hell limit the schools.

No team can set the market rate for each player.

So a lot of schools have a competitive NIL and then focus a good portion of the resources on retention.

There are a few advantages to this.
1) winning a recruit as a highest bid could be a future portal transfer when another school is willing to bid higher.
2) resources aren't capped out on developing talent (freshmen and underclassmen). The resources are directed to the actual players who will be responsible for actual wins.

If a player doesn't develop, they don't get the future raise.
If a player is a cancer, let them cancer elsewhere.
If a player does not have a suitable backup, expect to open up the wallet.

Kirby has been all about retention over attraction via NIL from the jump. His belief is that the development and opportunity should be the thing that gets them in the door and if they need more than a year or 2, then NIL is there to help keep them in place. Big reason why we could’ve used a guy like Walter Nolen but weren’t about to get into a bidding war and instead used the funds to keep Christen Miller, Mykel Williams, etc

That's nice to say but all of these schools are offering NIL deals to recruits, high school and transfer portal alike. Ideally, your roster is in a position like UGA's is, you're recruiting high school players at a great rate and you want to retain those guys, but let's not pretend they aren't being offered NIL deals on the front end.

if you are recruiting at a high level then your first priority should be retention and using NIL for those players

It's better than LSU not paying players.

you need to listen to more of the interview. Brian Kelly is doing it just that, he is not going to spend money on buying mercenaries and upsetting the locker room. He’s spending the money LSU gets on LSU players.

Think of college football as a big corporation (in essence, it is now).

As president, what's better for the entity's long-term success ........spend your big bucks on some unknown squirt fresh outta school with high grades with no experience or on your KNOWN big gorillas who have a proven track record of success to the entity and bottom-line and potential to be even better?

There's a reason Kirby's last name is Smart -- he is!

Once the stallion is in the stall, better to keep him there with sugar in your hand than trying to chase and rope him in from the wild.

That’s the company line. But reality is buy portal guys and highschool recruits like everyone else does.

You recruit, develop & pay to keep elite talent in the trenches, especially DT, C, edge, OT’s & man to man skills. You also pay the QB room. Those positions give you a consistent core to build on.

Skill positions must be absolute game wreckers (Bowers, Julio in his prime, etc). If you have limited resources, overspending here creates a bottleneck for other positions of need. Plenty of serviceable backs, safety/zone DB’s & WR’s in portal.

They’re getting something but it’s typically far from the leading bid. KJ Bolden is the only guy who has actually pulled down a sizable bag from us out of HS (despite what he says publicly). We were also prepared to go deep for Caleb Downs out of the portal but Ohio State went deeper at the last possible second and we weren’t going to play chase (Day is so, so fricked if he doesn’t win a title this season).

Chuck Oliver is an Auburn fan and hates Georgia, when he says something good about Georgia, it's typically on good authority.

For those who don't know, Chuck Oliver was the reporter who made Mark Richt throw a coke can in the post game presser after the 2012 SEC CG loss to Bama with the question "Why can't Aaron Murray win the big games?"
