quote:

If south/southeast of I-44 you are in Missour-UH... That is southern. Between I-44 and I-70 is kind of transitional. North of I-70 is no longer southern...

Although the Missouri river valley was the most "southern" part of the state in antebellum days. "Little Dixie".... Columbia was a Yankee town surrounded by southern sympathizers during the war. Thus the "Missouri Tigers" home guard.

Oklahoma is the same way I-44 south/southeast is southern. I-44 to I-35 north of that line is transitional. NW of I-35 and I-40 is plains. South of I-40 is southern and Texan southern. Southeast Oklahoma and south central Oklahoma are called "Little Dixie" as well.

There are cultural differences though. For example, Deep East Texas is similar to northern LA and most of MS. In other words if you placed someone there without them knowing, they wouldn't be able to distinguish the people or the customs and manners. Same goes for MS, AL and non metropolitan GA. Even the coastal plains of the Carolinas are culturally very similar.to rural Mississippi, when you exclude transplants. Rural southeast, and coastal North Carolina remind me of the coastal and Pinebelt regions of Mississippi.

There are pockets of SE Oklahoma, and most of eastern Oklahoma, where the dialect is more Tennessee than it is Texas or Oklahoma. I've spent half of my life there and have many friends (and family) there and it is simply the truth. There are historic links to Appalachia and Dixie in that region, just as the Cajun dialect bleeds over into deep east Texas and Houston area. Up and down the Sabine.

Let's face it, some of this stuff has to do with age and wisdom. The more time you have personally spent on the ground in these areas, the more you know.

This thread is ridiculous. Missouri - the best state in the South? Get real. I’ve been to Misery more times than I chose to remember ever since the SEC lost its mind and let this dreary place into the conference.
Misery is not a southern state. And any state that has been issued a travel warning for minorities to avoid due to safety reasons doesn’t qualify for anything except being recognized for their intolerance and stupidity.
It’s past time for the SEC to take a look at reorganizing the conference. Misery and ATM don’t belong and should be asked to move on and if Texas and Oklahoma choose to go with them I doubt many people will be begging them to stay.
