If south/southeast of I-44 you are in Missour-UH... That is southern. Between I-44 and I-70 is kind of transitional. North of I-70 is no longer southern...

Although the Missouri river valley was the most "southern" part of the state in antebellum days. "Little Dixie".... Columbia was a Yankee town surrounded by southern sympathizers during the war. Thus the "Missouri Tigers" home guard.

Oklahoma is the same way I-44 south/southeast is southern. I-44 to I-35 north of that line is transitional. NW of I-35 and I-40 is plains. South of I-40 is southern and Texan southern. Southeast Oklahoma and south central Oklahoma are called "Little Dixie" as well.

There are cultural differences though. For example, Deep East Texas is similar to northern LA and most of MS. In other words if you placed someone there without them knowing, they wouldn't be able to distinguish the people or the customs and manners. Same goes for MS, AL and non metropolitan GA. Even the coastal plains of the Carolinas are culturally very similar.to rural Mississippi, when you exclude transplants. Rural southeast, and coastal North Carolina remind me of the coastal and Pinebelt regions of Mississippi.
