We are less than a month away from opening night. New jerseys and helmets have made appearances on social media and do not appear to break any NCAA regulations. Karl Dorrell is a New York Jet. Stephen Rivers has joined a commune where chest passing is not just acceptable but praised. The 2014-15 season is thankfully behind us, and we have things to look forward too.

Derek Mason has taken control of the defense personally and promised a simpler but much more effective unit. We saw evidence of this against UT last year. Andy Ludwig is prepared to let the offense focus on Ralph Webb, but he is still working to develop our QBs and determine who the best option under center is. Both sides of the ball are being helped by James Dobson's work to add muscle, cut fat, and whip the players into shape.

The best part is that the improvements were allowed to show this weekend when Mason opened both Saturday and Sunday sessions to the public. Since I had nothing better to do, I went down for both sessions. After making some comments about the Saturday session, it was suggested I do a full write-up for Sunday if I so desired. So here are my full Observations from Open Practice.

Now let's look at the shiny new gear!

Hope they dedicate the season to the memory of Frank Mordica, rip.

Enjoyed reading your practice observations.

Hoping Vandy & State play this year, as that will mean an SEC Championship for one.

This was tweeted out by Mason with the caption "We aren't done yet...08.16.15 #AnchorDown". I'm not sure where they are going with the 4th design, but a video was also released for it. Eight. Sixteen. Fifteen. Apparently, the "Take them to deep waters" mantra is back, and it will be significant for this uniform. I expect it to be something involving "battleship grey", but I hope they avoid basketball's folly of using neon yellow.

The northern burbs

FWIW, they are good this year. Think they are picked to win and MTSU finish third in their conference.

I'm actually happy with the progress they're making. If McCrary weren't shitting the bed so much they could have won both games.
