If if comes down to money, I think Tech can offer 400k max?(talking out of my arse) Just know Smith & Kelly are extremely close.

Bull shite. Tech double mortgaged Bobby Dodd to pay of Paul Hewitts lifetime contract and is still paying him. They do not have that much money to pay a position coach

The jury is still out for me.

Coach O was arguably our most valuable coach in 2011 with Trees injury, coaching up Gilliard, and getting Tree prepared for his new position.

However, 2012 has been a dumpster fire. Gilliard fell offthe map. Robinson was supposed to be our starter in 2011, but when Gilliard needed to be benched, CRob never could get beyond role player. Herrera looked good at the Moe spot. But when he was moved over to the Mike spot, he was worse than gilliard.

And worst of all... no one can tell me that tree reached his full potential. He is the definition of raw. He is the definition of relying on his athleticism.

We went from one of Richt's best run defenses in 2011 to his absolute worst. And the question stands... was coach O riding the wake of Belin? Are we trending at the position?

Why does an nfl coach of 10 years come back to coach inside linebackers in college? He's not even responsible for linebackers. Just the inside.

Charles Kelly is kinda like GT's Dabo in my eyes.., he'd stay at Tech and sacrifice his own pay to have the right guy.. Behind the scenes, there's several scenarios going on right now, so who knows... CPJ and Co. will have some $ to throw around, but yeah... it's an issue.

I'm still on the fence with coach O. I think the first three games will tell the tale on this so far as what he's coaching and how these kids absorb it since we have so many new faces on the field. I'm in high hopes he steps up his game b/c to me in the 3/4 scheme the guys in the middle (nose and middle backer) are the two that have the hardest job on the d side. Only two hats in 0 gap potentially having to account for 4 hats being center 2 guards and in some cases a fullback and that's a lot of pressure. I think this is why our run D was so shaky. On a side note I think McClendon is an exceptional coach with a damn good dawg pedigree, I had a good time with his dad at the UGA football camps in the early 90's.

That's part of why it's so profitable. If you don't spend anything, it's easy to stay in the black.

Why stay in the far reaches of the black and lose when it counts when you could spend the dough and make more money by winning those games with better assistants or "consultants"? I personally have enough UGA garb to stock the shelves of a small fan store and I'm sure many others on here are the same way. The only thing I would like more than the stuff i added to my collection this year would be is a NC hat for my collection on top of the SI special issue hardback on the Dawgs first NC in over 20 years.

Didn't he leave the NFL when the there was a lot of serious speculation about the lockout? His daughter also has cancer(?) I think which would require a pretty stable medical insurance situation which a state school with a football program noted for its stability could provide, especially close to a top-ranked children's hospital. I would also imagine that college position coaches even with recruiting responsibilities may have more time to spend with the family, but unsure of that last point.

Exactly what level of NFL coach would leave to coach Dline at UGA? One that can been jettisoned along with a head coach/d coordinator.

That is what you are looking at.

Groh should have kept his mouth shut. When I interviewed a prospective employee that put down his current/prior employer the interview didn't last long.

I believe that came out after he got here so it wouldn't have been a factor in his decision.

And Olivadotti had been with the Redskins since 2000 and stayed with them until 2011, surviving quite a few head coaching changes - so NFL may actually provide more stability for a position coach than college.

I agree whole heartedly. I think the linebackers have been the best and most consistant performing unit the last couple of years.

Not in 2012. Absolutely every player on our roster at ILB underperformed.

2011: Christian Robinson was supposed to be a starter and wear the C on his jersey. By the end of 2012, he never got better than a role player who could hang in there on 3rd and longs at the Mike spot.

2012: Mike Gilliard. Mike who? He fell off the team this season. He played like most expected him to play going into the 2011 team. Invisible.

2012: Amarlo Herrera. I'll give him credit. He looked solid at the Moe linebacker position. However, he wasn't any better than Gilliard or Robinson at the Mike spot. And that's bad.

2012: Alec Ogletree. The kid is a stud. However during the combine and NFL draft, analysts will be calling him raw. They will be saying that he relied on his athleticism. He took poor angles and couldn't get off blocks (ie. coaching). But he had a motor, intensity, and mean streak that could make plays all over the field (ie. athletic ability).

It's called the Inside Linebacker Coach.
Coach em up!

We gave up more yards per carry EVER under the Richt era. And it wasn't on the perimeter. It was right at our ILBs. They didn't fit gaps. They didn't attack the line. They didn't get off blocks.
5 SEC teams gave up fewer passing yards than we gave up rushing yards. That should never happen.

I'll concede that Olivadatti was our best coach in 2011. But he was possibly the worst position coach during the Richt era in 2012. And it makes you wonder if Belin had something to do with our ability at the position a year after he left for the Panthers.
