Got the opportunity to go to the scrimmage on Saturday and thought I'd share some notes I jotted down this morning.

Please excuse the mostly unorganized formatting and NB4 "holy wall of text" comments

Offense

1) Ahkil Crumpton and John Fitzpatrick were your offensive MVP’s
- Crumpton caught a swing pass and juked two starting db’s (Reed and somebody at corner/star) that made the entire crowd go “whoaaaaaa” then nearly scored from 75 yards away
- Fitzpatrick had a td and a couple other long receptions and ran over Speed at the end of one of them
- Fitz’s one td was form third string qb

2) James Cook is going to be electric in space, but definitely looks too small to be a between the tackles guy. Just a natural catching the ball.

3) Neither qb did anything particularly special, but there was no attempt to establish a ground game (foundation of the offense) and I assume we were extremely vanilla with the amount of fans present, so they weren’t exactly in an advantageous situation
- Fields definitely tried to make a few big plays at times when not needed. For example, he scrambled around for a while and heaved a 60 yard bomb to Holloman in triple coverage, though it landed safely out of bounds. He sure does throw a pretty ball though
- Fields had two batted balls intercepted, with a couple other batted balls that fell to the ground
- He did have a great td to Mecole in redzone work, rolled out to his right with Mecole streaking across the back of the endzone
- Fromm didn’t do much either, but he had a great play where he escaped pressure, rolled right, and found Fitzpatrick wide open over a lb that turned into a big gain

4) Jayson Stanley got more deep ball attempts than Mecole, Ridley, and DRob combined, which was pretty lame
- DRob didn’t get much action other than a couple of hitch routes that I saw, but he did have one catch that turned some heads

5) Lots of shuffling across the O line, but saw Trey Hill get a lot of reps at first string LG. Granted, Baker moved over the LT at that point, like we’ve seen in recent practice reports
- Salyer got mostly center work from what I saw

6) Really sucks about Zeus. We were all commenting about how you couldn’t even tell the guy was 8-9 months removed from an ACL early in practice. Didn’t even notice him get hurt either

Defense
1) Stokes played almost every single snap (maybe even all of them) with the 1’s at corner opposite Baker
- Campbell seemed to be working with Baker the whole time, so it looked like they were either getting him personal coaching with Baker, or training him to be Baker’s backup

2) Star:
- Saw a lot of W. Grant at star early on, even when the offense was in 3 WR sets, so it wasn’t just meant to be a run stuffing defense
- Gibbs played a lot
- Poole wasn’t out there with the 1’s as much as I expected

3) Quay Walker is a physical freak. He threw somebody down to the ground pretty hard chasing down the sideline
- ILB in general was a revolving door. Taylor, Natrez, Rice, Crowder, Walker, Tindall all worked with the 1’s and 2’s in various rotations. Didn’t see Hunter or McBride get above the 3rd team

4) RLIII cut the dreads, but he was flying around out there. He and Reed are going to be quite the safety duo. Really need both of those guys to stay healthy all year
- Otis Reese is also a freak
- Chris Smith made a few plays

5) On one of Fields’ batted balls, Malik Herring made a diving one handed grab to pick it off. Dude is quite the athlete

Special Teams
Quite the up and down day here

1) Backup kicker (Buce) nailed a 50 yarder. Hot Rod missed one I think, there were lots of made field goals though

2) Camarda boomed his first punt 55 yards, returned 9 yards; boomed his second one 50 with no return. He then proceeded to shank the next two. He's gotta be the guy though, just needs to figure out some consistency.
- Other punters were not impressive

3) Jayson Stanley got reps as second team PR and KR. Thought I was watching Reggie Davis

Thanks for the report. Very excited about our secondary this year. Really athletic guys back there.

This is better than every single practice report combined.

Thanks very much for taking the time. If Stokes could turn into a good cover corner, that might be the best news of the entire offseason. Losing Nadab Joseph to JUCO, Divaad Wilson to injury, McGhee out for a while, we need some good news in the secondary.

Not sure what to think about Walter Grant at star. He wouldn't have been one of my guesses until way down the list.

Can Stanley catch the friggen ball under pressure yet?

Another report from scrimmage. This one maybe isn’t that insightful though.

Grant is a flex guy at star that allows us to be multiple on D without having to swap personnel. He will be used similarly to LCarter last year when he was played at star.

Stout enough to play the run and long enough to cover. Really important role for the games in which teams try to HUNH us into bad personnel matchups.

I didn't see any mention of Mark Webb. Did he play? I thought he was back from the meniscus injury and practicing again.

Wasn't it Webb who was destined to be the other #1 CB rather than Stokes? (assuming McGhee is surpassed or still not playing due to the foot injury)

Did White get carries before the injury and how did he look?

Stanley has had a really good camp and is in fact catching the football.

There's a ton of competition at that other CB spot.
There's also a ton of competition at ILB.

Interesting that Stokes has developed. I think the McGhee news is bad but maybe he'll be back by like week 4 or something just like Malkom Parrish did and help us.....

Malkom Parrish....Malkom Parrish....*sigh*...he could really tackle well at his position.

Webb has been limited with an injury, but he is battling for the other corner spot. It’s nice to finally have some quality depth on the team.

Think about it like Leonard Floyd, who played a good bit of STAR in his day. Grant is built and plays a lot like Floyd. Long and rangy but also capable of filling against the run or rushing off the edge.

Webb was out there the whole scrimmage, he was just running with the 2’s opposite of Campbell.

That competition at corner was what intrigued me the most. And I almost got to ask Kirby about it after practice when he addressed everyone, but he only took a few questions and was probably irritated that Zeus was the first one.

For Zeus, I only saw a couple of touches and there wasn’t any room for him to do much, so you couldn’t really tell what he brought to the table.

And agreed on the Grant - Zo - Floyd comparisons. I think he’s just an athletic, rangy guy that needs experience at Star for some offenses we play. Not gonna be there when we’re playing Mizzou.

Other note, the new sound system is loud. That stadium shakes when the bass is up now.

Geeze, I really wanted to see McBride start one day but it doesn’t seem to be in the cards.

I thought McBride might be the rare white Linebacker that starts in the SEC but he always seemed to be battling some nagging injury
