I’m in a UGA windbreaker with a douche-tastic no mustache, chin beard.

Catch 22 Gastropub in Athens has a location in Helen also. I really like the food there.

Nacoochee Grill has good food. It’s a stretch to call it the best food in Helen. It’s not as good as it was 5-10 years ago, and a lot of the other newer places in Helen have upped their game. 10 years ago, you could put Nacoochee Grill up there and have no fear of being wrong.

It is all about personal preference, after all...but tourist like Nacoochee more than the locals. Except the older crowd, anyway.

I haven't eaten there in 3 or 4 years...probably should have mentioned that.

But, I've never had a better meal within 1 mile of downtown Helen.

Edit: my parents live off Duncan Bridge road. But now that I have kids I don't go out when I visit them.

Small world. I live a stones throw from Drunken Binge Road, myself.

Kids make simply going out to eat a difficulty. Don’t worry, they will be old enough to be presentable in public before you know it, lol.

Are you from this area or did your parents just retire here?

I grew up in Woodstock. My parents moved there about 12 years ago.

I just saw this post. I go to Helen every summer. Great suggestions, I used to like Yonah Burger. The deck behind Paul’s had decent wings.

a sandwich called the Camel Rider

Just curious if this "camel rider" is the same sandwich I am familiar with from my days stationed in Mayport, Fl. Out on Jax Beach was a small shop that specialized in "camel riders". Is it like a sub with the meat, etc. inside the pocket of a piece of flat bread?

That sounds very similar to what was served at Jax Beach in the mid to late 80's. Pita bread (I called it flat bread) is the key, however, I always passed on the oil and vinegar and preferred mayo and mustard.

Do they still do the jeep weekend thing in Helen? Bozerfest or some such name?

When I was in high school it was served in a pita pocket. They now serve between two pieces of flatbread...little more difficult to eat now, and you should never switch out from the sweet vinaigrette that it comes with...you lose the essence of the sandwich by substituting mayo and mustard.
