If we get Jamaree Salyer and Trey Hill with Max Wray committed and the 2019 class over the horizon, UGA's line could start a....................DYNASTY

It would be about time. We haven't had a formidable OL in literally 10 years. Wasn't Sturdivant the last of the stud OL guys from back in the day?

Yup.
Boss Andrews was pretty danged good. But Glenn was elite at the college level for a good part of his career.

Wonder if Holyfield gets a RS. Probably not, which means a wasted season for him. Unless, of course, he's destined to be eternally 4th or 5th string and then it doesn't really matter.

It wasn't a wasted season for Holyfield. 1) Can't remember the last good UGA or SEC running back to stay for 5 years. 2)He didn't get many carries but he got a lot of reps as a blocker and I believe played some special teams.

Some of the comments in the OP link allude to NCAA redshirt rules changing, and that's why Kindley was able to get his, but I'm not knowledgeable enough about the old nor the new rules to know what this would mean for Holyfield.

The AFCA proposed changes were if they play less than 4 games, then can keep the redshirt. Uncertain how much time Holyfield played though? Also, haven't seen that the proposed rules were accepted yet.

Holyfield appeared in 3 games and had 6 carries.

It does seem like a waste of a year of his eligibility. He probably won't stay at UGA for 5 years, but if things don't work out (I hope they do, like his running) he'd want that year to help make his mark somewhere else.

The 5th year is so overblown. Especially for tailbacks. Who was the last tailback to leave his mark in the 5th year?
Who was the last non-QB to leave his mark in the 5th year (I have 1 in mind... but it goes a way back)?

I think you're discounting veteran leadership, but at the RB position, if you go till the fifth year it's almost certain that you had medical issues or you're just unlikely to get drafted, so the point remains.

3rd and 4th year players are veterans, too.
Heck... a sophophomore with 16 starts under his belt is a veteran. This is college.

So Holyfield's extra year of eligibility doesn't seem important to you. That's fine, but he might eventually feel differently and wish he had it. If his goal is to play in the NFL, that extra year, either at UGA or somewhere else, might be when he finally gains some notice, especially if he loses a year to transfer. Throw in an injury or two, possibly relearning a scheme, and four years of eligibility can get used up pretty fast.

People forget that the NFL has a practice squad. You get paid about 6 figures to workout with the team, learn the playbook, use the nutritionist and facilities.
I promise you that Holyfield won't need a 5th year (even with an injury).

Since you replied, I will ask again. Who was the last tailback to contribute in his 5th year?
Who was the last player to make a huge impact outside of Qb in a 5th year (non-medical redshirt).

I'm not sure why you keep asking me that. I don't care who the last one was. I'm sure there have been more than a few 5th year tailbacks who played well for their college team and went on to play in the NFL. Or who just got to enjoy playing a bigger role for their team before they went on to do something else with their lives. I don't plan to research it though, because the relative frequency of that happening doesn't impact my opinion.
Some players, including running backs, find that they like having that 5th year of eligibility, because it gives them a bit more time to achieve their goals. In fact, people in all walks of life like having extra time to achieve their goals, even if their goals will be difficult to attain. At least they can say they gave it their best shot. If you think Elijah Holyfield (or another RB) couldn't possibly gain benefit from redshirting, under any future set of circumstances, we'll have to disagree.
