I don't think Friend is the best OL coach we could land, but he is a clear step up from Searels. We've recruited better the last couple of classes than under Stacy, but we've still got a ways to go. I don't worry too much about stars on OL, but I want 4 or 5 in every single class unless is just a bad year and we can afford to just take 3.
This class this year is the one that really sets the tone for Friend for me. I really like the last class and if can follow it up with another strong one, then I think the OL is on it's way. Allen is the key to this class, if we can add someone even better than him in addition to him, then I'll love this class.
As for his coaching ability, I'm not really down on that, both Cordy Glenn and Gates played a pretty good LT and both of those guys are Guards. If can consistently get solid play out of Guards lined up at tackle like Glenn, Gates and Houston, then I would really like to see what kind of play he could get out of an actual Tackle like Theus or a "true LT" like Tunsil if we could ever get one.
That brings up one last point. If Benedict Tunsil doesn't get bought and he goes to UGA like he should have, we all have a very different outlook on Friend.

I understand your confusion on what makes a true LT since, as an UGA fan, you keep watching guards play the position.
say what?

99% of your posts are ignorant and ignorant.
I think you've got a point here.
What I think you are forgetting is that ending the 2012 season we had what most people would call a pretty damn good OL and all the starters would return for 2013, then Richt lost control of Austin, so 4/5 return, then Houston got cleared by NCAA, so it sort of made up for Long's departure.
Will Friend was gonna coachemup and we would finally have a Bama caliber line for 2013... with our running backs and the Dark Lord, and Murray, blah blah blah.
Will Friend is the reason our offensive line underdelivered in 2013.
Tunsil's benediction would have nothing to do with that part of it.
I will respectfully await your counterpoint.

He did not word that well at all, but watch Kenarious Gates on this play, this is what he means. Our players do this sort of thing intentionally too often when they are getting beat.

He is fine. Got beat some towards the end of last year, but he was true freshman, so I'm not gonna come down too hard. I would expect him to be one of our starting OGs this season. Hopefully LG, but RG would be fine.
Also keep eye out for Greg Pyke at the other Guard spot. Huge guy and very athletic, was an elite lacrosse player and had multiple offers for college.

Ehhh, I don't know about that
Pyke will start at RG this year barring a setback though

We have had issues on the OL for a long time and yes, recruiting has been a significant part of the issue. Someone on Dawgrun compiled OL recruiting data like over the last 10 years from that point (granted that was a couple of years ago) and the average recruiting ranking on the OL was a little less than 3 stars. Theus was the first 5 star OL that I can remember. I did a quick tally using Rivals ratings. Since 2010, UGA has recruited the following OL:
1 five star, Theus
3 four stars
12 three stars
1 two star
Even without doing a weighted average it is easy to see that most of the OL we recruit are 3 stars. Haven't done the same comparison for the top SEC teams, Alabama, Auburn and LSU but I'm willing to bet they have recruited significantly better on the OL than we have.

He was ranked by InsideLacrosse as the #8 player in the nation. How good he was at lacrosse really got downplayed in his recruitment.

Having watched him play lacrosse a lot (5 or 6 games) in person, he didn't strike me as a guy who could contribute at a high D1 level. He's not fast enough, but he's fast for an OL.
Maybe they were trying to generate hype for their rankings by including a player from football or basketball (not uncommon for Inside Lacrosse), but he wasn't elite player. He was a matchup problem with his size, but not enough of one that he should have been ranked that highly.
ETA: He was the subject of this play-by-play for the ages LINK

Ra'd for recruiting stickie seeing how we don't have any open thread topics for fluff<
Posted on 7/6/14 at 6:11 pm to deeprig9
This thread is basically jumbling 2 separate issues.
1) the performance of our offensive line
2) our recruiting on the line the past 3 seasons and what that means for our team in 2014 and 2015.
Too many people are down on Theus. He's ahead of schedule, as a tackle. Look at Cordy Glenn after his sophomore season and realize that he was a 2nd round draft pick and starting left tackle in the NFL the last 2 seasons.
This is where Theus starts paying dividends for the team (as an upper-classman).

teach me more... are you saying that our lineman slip on their plant foot more than other players?

Let's wait to judge Friend after we see Theus perform at LT.

I think Friend got the nob thanks to Neil Callaway. Friend was Callaway's OLC at UAB. I thought it was a good hire due to that fact alone. (I was a Callaway fan.) I was hoping he would bring back some of Callaway's style.
Callaway is a terrible head coach but the guy can flat out coach the Oline.
He was hired away from a doomed job at UAB by none other than Bobby Petrino when he was coaching at Western Kentucky. He turned Petrino down when offered the same job at Louisville.
So if Friend doesn't work out we could prolly pick up Callaway for a bargain?

quote:
Callaway knows a thing or two about having success at the collegiate level, as he has been a part of 10 Southeastern Conference titles during his career as a player and as a coach. Callaway won three conference championships during his playing days with Alabama, then four as an assistant at Auburn, one as an assistant at Alabama and two during his time as offensive coordinator at Georgia.
Callaway served on the Georgia staff for six seasons (2001-06) before going to UAB, helping the Bulldogs to 61 wins over that six-year span, which included a pair of SEC titles, three SEC East titles, four bowl wins and four top-10 finishes in the national polls. In 2002, the Bulldogs finished as the SEC's top scoring (32.14 ppg) and pass efficiency (138.91) offense and were second in scoring offense in 2005.
In addition, Callaway helped develop numerous outstanding offensive linemen for the Bulldogs. While under Callaway's tutelage, six different Georgia offensive linemen earned All-Southeastern Conference honors on 10 occasions. One of them -- Max Jean-Gilles -- received All-America accolades in 2005.

USC signed 5 4* OL in the previous 3 cycles, per Rivals and 247....

So even though I specifically called out the metrics by which I was making my calculations, in the very first sentence of the OP no less, you still felt it necessary to chime in with a Rivals stat to give yourself a 5th player on the list, even though the discussion at hand has nothing to do with whether or not the cocks have 4 or 5, and changes absolutely nothing in the conversation, and adds absolutely nothing to the discussion.
Why?
Why?
