That job is a freakin mess for anyone who takes it but I'm sure the Underarmour folks will throw some money at
'em.

When Kirby was asked why he didnt take a "smaller job" prior to being our coach, he said if you take the wrong first job it will be your last job. Maryland would be a tough place to win at imo. If I am Mel, i would hold out for something better like USC, Auburn or FSU.

I love Mel Tucker, but as long as it's Mel and not Dell, I'm good. I think McGhee and Pittman are the two on staff we absolutely cannot afford to lose.
Kirby runs that defense and he'll find his guy at D.C. if need be.

Obviously much better jobs but I'm not sure Mel would be the choice for those places. He should take a hard look @ UNC if they can Fedora...not a bad job at all IMO.

I'm guessing it will be Glenn Schumann if Tucker leaves.

Damon Evans trying to poach us eh?

Tuck has grown on me as well. It will come a day when he leaves. I just wonder will Kirby go young hotshot or an established guy like Bud Foster.

Foster has had many, many chances to leave Va Tech and never has. I think Richt offered him a job the year Pruitt was hired and he said no. Foster even stayed on as VT DC after the coaching change. He isn't leaving.

This... There is a near zero percent chance that Foster ever goes anywhere... It would take something colossally bad happening at VaTech OR he would have to do something to get himself taken out of the role... at which point he'd be persona non grata anyways for any coaching opening we might have.

Additionally, defensive minded head coaches aren't interested in guys that have their own system.
D.C. Under Kirby will always be a highly paid position coach/recruiter

Game has passed Foster by, college version of Dick Labuea.

Agreed. Now that Schumann has gotten a few years under his belt, he would seem most likely for the gig if Tucker were to leave, though I'd like one more year if possible with Tucker personally... I think Maryland is a *horrible* landing spot if you're Tucker.
As someone else mentioned, UNC... good spot. VERY winnable division. Fanbase that *wants* to be relevant. Decent in-state recruiting and good footprint with access into south carolina, north georgia, eastern tennessee, and Virginia.

Yeah. I will say though, despite all the Maryland troubles, they are making a lot of investment.
I just left their campus today after a few meetings, and they are doing some major football facility upgrades that we got a sneak peak of. The whole university, from my limited perspective, seems to be willing to invest in football.
Under Armor also provides a lot (when not dealing with strip club expense report drama).

Dick LeBeau's Pittsburgh defenses were nasty every year, including the final season before he retired.

Interesting to know... Just a terrible division to be in... Between Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Penn State, there is a better than average chance that at least 2 of those teams will be pretty good each year... at a minimum. I think the division is a little overhyped sometimes, but I'm not sure I see Maryland consistently competing with those programs? They barely competed in the ACC before they moved.

Maryland has always had a bit of a sleeping giant feel to me. It's a Big Ten school in the DC/Baltimore area (which produces good HS talent). It is also close to Philadelphia/New Jersey and Virginia Beach, two other areas with very good HS talent. I've never understood why it is so hard to recruit there, despite the close proximity of talent.
The Nike stuff used to work for Oregon in recruiting. You'd think Maryland could use Under Armour to the same advantage.

To me, the best mid level power 5 jobs are ones that have above average resources and recruiting potential coupled with below average expectations.
If Maryland had a coach that didn't kill children and consistently got them to 8-4, I bet they would let him cash million dollar checks undisturbed for a while.

No doubt a very underrated area.Bama grabs some blue chippers from there occasionally.

Not quite the same ballpark as Nike and Knight as far as $$ but Kevin Plank has pumped in $25 million plus into the program.
Always heard their stadium was in really bad shape...are they working on doing upgrades/improvements?
