Well, do we lose Heyward for sure in a few years?

Depends how he does. If he goes off these next two years, I doubt we have the money to keep him even with the new stadium and Uggla coming off the books.

They keep surprising me though. I would have though Heyward would have been a bigger priority than Kimbrel

Me too, but has Heyward really proven he is a superstar? Because he is going to ask for superstar, face of our franchise type money. Ideally would love to keep him but wouldn't be surprised if he ends up in LA, NY or Boston.

When 100% healthy, yes. That has been his problem though. This year is huge for him to determine his worth.

Doubt it. I feel like they signed him short term until Uggla comes off the bonks and will sign him long term then. That's just my guess, though.

Would be ideal. Uggla hasn't shown any indication he can become what he was.

And...

Seems like an awful lot for a player who only played 68 innings last year. That is $132k/inning if he makes 9million for that year.

Do you understand today's baseball?

Mariano Rivera, who retired last year to great fanfare and acclamation and a sure first ballot HOFer, averaged 58 games and 50 saves a season while striking out an average of 1 hitter per inning over his 19 year ML career. During that 19 years, literally all he did was pitch the ninth.

Kimbrell's stats over the last 3 years are Rivera like - 70 games and 46 saves per season while striking out 1.7 hitters per inning. And last season was his best. I don't know if Kimbrell will go 19, that is rare for any pitcher of any ilk, but he should go the next 4.

So, next time he takes the mound, wake up, put down the beer and watch what could be a HOFer at his business.

I keep thinking the same thing...that a closer isn't worth this much money...but then I remember that 5 or 6 year stretch when we rotated awful closers and nobody could get the job done. I wouldn't even expect us to win with a 3 run lead going into the 8th.

It's been so nice to know we have a 95% chance of winning in the 9th when we have a lead.

Yeah, i don't know how long you have been a fan, but I clearly recall (really will never forget) Cox bringing in Leibrandt in relief vs the Twins and Jays in back to back World Series. Two appearances, two Ls.

Let's not go back to that.

Relief is important.

Wow. That's almost as big as signing Freeman long term.

My guess is he has a down year this year. Seems to always happen right after they sign a fat contract.

4 years is forever for a closer. they usually have arm trouble or flat out lose their velocity.

I love Kimbrel. But this is a risk because of the nature of the position.

Recent memories of Kolb, Reitsma, and Wickman are what make me love this.

Soriano - blew his arm
Gonzalez - blew his arm

When is the last time that we had a player hold down the closer spot for 4 years?

We kill guys back there (oflaherty, moylan).
The Billy Wagners and Mariano Riveras are literally 1 in a billion ballplayers.
You are more often going to find a Gagne who brings you 3 years and then flames out on his velocity.
(We've already got 2+ years from Kimbrell).

No question you'd rather sign a two year deal if you're the Braves, but his agent gets paid to get those extra years on there. If they get two more league leading years out of this, it will have been well worth it.

I understand what you are saying... but ultimately, it only works if he gets us to a world championship.

I'd take 1 title and 3 dead years on the contract and call it a success.

If he gives us 4 years of 40+ saves and chokes in a big game (no world series), we can call it a success but deep down we would know that we were fooling ourselves.

I've basically thrown in the towel on another WS. This team should have played in around 9 or 10 WS, winning about 4 or 5 of those just in the last 24 years.

We blow games/series in the weirdest ways.

It's frustrating as hell.

It's baseball.

It is so easy to get the fever.

A kid like simmons or gattis steps in, and it's addicting.
A month like Justin Upton started with, and it's hard not to check in for every at bat.

And if i didn't watch the game but catch kimbrel on the mound, i wake my 9 year old up and we watch to see if there is only 1 k or if he strikes out the side.

Crazy game the way it sucks us in with any bit of hope.
