"Salt of the Earth"

Movie is not great but the back story and how it came to be is fascinating. This movie is widely heralded as the only movie in American film history to be black listed. A group of black listed film industry types tell the story of a New Mexico mine strike and when they can only find three professional actors to star in the film they use actual miners and their families as the stars of the film.

Another one that I saw about a year ago and haven't found many people who have seen or heard of is "Savannah The Movie" about market gunners in Savannah. Good tale, good production values, not great acting. Supposedly the maker's father loved the book and the movie was made for him. It was never meant to be released to a general audience and was made knowing it was a losing venture but was a labor of love. Not a great movie by any stretch but great story and good enough movie given the way/reasons it was made....

1. Dredd. Recent remake of the old Stallone Judge Dredd movie. Shoot 'em up that surprised the heck out of me with how good it was.

2. 84 Charlie Mopic. Indie film from '89 about the Vietnam War. Highly worth watching if you can find it. My brother turned me on to it when he was serving with the Green Berets in S. Korea.

have to list latest reboot of Robocop w/ Joel Kinnamin (The Killing) in keeping with original post subject I'm pretty sure most here and everywhere didn't realize this remake was even there. :)

Other than the logistics of the movie no. It is a piece of American history, both film and generally speaking. The subject matter is so far from reality that it is laughable (even at the time). Straight up propaganda and not even remotely entertaining (at least "The Green Berets" had some entertainment value).

you referencing war films

While we are discussing ones being left out one has to mention A Bridge Too Far. Easily my top 5. I am fascinated by the failure of Operation Market Garden and hating Monty though.

But who the frick doesn't like a good war movie with Sean Connery?

I did too. I didn't want to see it which surprised some of my friends cause that's my genre. I just thought Shia LeBouf or w/e his name was gonna suck and that the main character was gonna remind me too much of that pussy in saving private ryan. The kid was a poonanny but it ended up being a good movie.

I wanna see that movie with Benedict Cumberbatch about the Enigma

odd bit of trivia imo. Cumberbatch is the voice of Smaug in the Hobbit

The imitation game was probably in my top three movies last year

I can't wait to see it. Also, this movie isn't totally unheard of but I feel like not enough people have seen it. Cinderella Man. Without a doubt one of my favorite movies of all time. Got it going on right now. His fight with Art Lasky might be my favorite scene in any movie.

Beyond The Gates/Shooting Dogs

(US Title, International title)
About the Rwandan Genocide - filmed at the location of one of the biggest massacres.

Talvisota
Finnish movie about The Winter War with the Soviets

Tae Guk Gi

Korean movie about the Korean War

Stalingrad
(German version) and Stalingrad (Russian version)
Two different looks at the same battle. The German one is more of a think piece, the Russian one is a bit more John Woo/Quentin Tarantino-ish in its battle scenes.

Crime movies:
Suicide Kings
King of New York
State of Grace

Ride With The Devil is a dang good WBTS era film as well.

Just wish someone other than Ang Lee had directed it - it feels a bit flowery to me. But yeah, good movie.

Trying to use England to portray South Vietnam was a bad decision, though. The two look *nothing* alike.
