It's also April 2017...not December 2017, so there is plenty of time for many flipadelphia gifs as long as we play well in the 2017 season.

Yeah, the thing that I've heard repeated the most for this class is they want to see the results on the field. First year coach hype has worn down, lets see what he can do.

The man just landed us the highest class in our history and you think he'll catch heat this season. Too funny..

Salyer will be visiting this weekend, pretty big news.

Honest question, you don't think the fans will be screaming at Kirby is he strikes out in 2018? I look at this way, UGA fans are conditioned for let downs. He set the expectations extremely high with the 2017 class, so with optimism comes expectations. Is that a fair statement?

FTR, I have no idea what this class will look like come NSD. I'm not a doomsday fan, but if you believe the chatter on 247 and listen to the Dawgnation podcast, it will be disheartening to lose out on another GA prospect. Purely hypothetical at this point. Sentell over at Dawgnation thinks UGA only lands 5 of the top 20 in the state. I know I'll get more snowflake downvotes, but that is Richt territory.

IMO, UGA's issue is that there is an obvious depth chart logjam (that means we should have a good team), but we don't have results in hand to overcome that in recruits' minds.

I'm not sweating it over one recruit. And when I look at the top recruits in Ga this year three of them are qbs and weren't going to come probably, we have a good shot at the two top OL in the state, plus Cox. We'll be okay. If we whiff on the 19 class he'll have some heat.

Agreed. Virtually everyone agrees that the 2018 class in GA is not gold standard compared to what we normally produce (and by extension, bring lots into Athens). This is doubly so when you compare the talent loading up in state from 2019. If both of those sentiments are true, then I can't imagine that Kirby not taking the majority of the 2018 class from GA is a bad thing.

Especially if the '18 kids don't address the team's needs.

Land Salyer, Hill, and Cox in-state, bring in White and a 4-star QB from out-of-state (hopefully Mixon), and hang onto Anderson. That would address most of our needs and give us a lot of good top-end talent. Our previous two classes make up most of our talent on the current team which means there isn't a ton of PT available. Combine that with a slightly lower than expected finish last year and i think a lot of guys are waiting to see what Kirby can do this upcoming season. If we win 9+ games then I think Kirby and Co make the argument that they're improving and here to stay. Then the dominoes start to fall.

Good point Crow. I think a perfect example is QB and OL. If Kirby lands Hill and Salyer, that's damn right impressive with the talent coming in 2017.

Brenton Cox no longer committing this weekend, have to think that's good news for us.

Also, 2017 Alabama D-Tackle commit Akial Byers who was thought to be going the JUCO route, now says he's qualified and will be at G-Day.

I am thinking he needs to win 10 this year, along with the East, to quiet the doubters.

What are you thinking?

I criticized him a lot for the teams performance on the field last season. But I agree, that he did very well last year, recruiting. One down year could be a fluke. 2 down years you hear complaints. 3 down years and he could be feeling the heat, depending on how the team performs on the field.

Personally, it's nice to see highly ranked classes, but if he gets the job done on the field, I couldn't care less if we have the 50th ranked class. It's what he does on the field that matters most.

I still think he is the right person for the job. I just want to see improvement on the field this year.

I would think bad news. he was thought to be a heavy UGA lean, then went to OSU for a visit, now he is putting off his announcement. Sounds to me like OSU gave him something to think about.

Hope I am wrong and you are right, though.

He went from not having a timeline at all for his announcement to suddenly scheduling it after he gets off the plane from OSU. Him putting that off another week or two with a UGA visit fresh on his mind should set us up pretty well, and let some of the OSU momentum wear off.

They may be saying that, but it generally doesn't work that way. Usually, results on the field show up in the following year's recruiting class. Right now Kirby is reaping the results of last season, and by the time he has a chance to change that perception, a lot of these kids will have formed close relationships elsewhere. It's hard to change their minds late in the year, unless you play like Auburn. If we do well this season, maybe win the east, it'll probably have more impact on the 19 class than 18.

What Smart should be doing is turning up the heat on some plan B guys. Georgia is always loaded with under the radar players who turn out to be pretty good. If Smart lets that group get away too, he risks putting a big talent hole in his roster for the next three years.

Disagree. That's what got us the 2013 class. Keep pushing for plan A guys and search for more plan A guys, no matter where they're from.

Odds of success go way down at that point. OOS recruiting, especially for good players, is a lot tougher. Plus, it's harder for our coaches to evaluate guys from long distance. At this point, unless there's more real interest out there than we're hearing, he should start getting some Georgia kids on board. Get the ones who don't have NFL measurables but are good football players.

This ain't Alabama, and Kirby best get that through his head; top players from around the country won't be flocking to his door. He can survive a 20th ranked recruiting class while he tries to prove he's better than losing to Tech and Vanderbilt. But if he lets Tennessee and Auburn and South Carolina and Georgia Tech, etc, form relationships and ransack that second tier of in-state recruits, this will get ugly.

Where are you seeing this? I haven't seen it mentioned on any of the Alabama sites.

From UGA's Rivals site.

quote:

I'm told by Danny West of our Arkansas site that Akial Byers, a 2017 Alabama signee who was headed for the junior college route, will visit Georgia this weekend for G-Day following a Missouri visit last week.

West says he's been told that Byers is now eligible and has restarted his recruitment.
