The same kids when timed with a laser end up in the 4.6-4.7 range, which is still considered NFL-type speed. Remember when everyone was going nuts years ago because Vance Cuff was timed at 4.2 and Cornelius Washington was 270 lbs and timed at 4.35? Yeah, hand timed. Washington was clocked around 4.6 at the combine (still freakishly fast for a dude that size).

The more determinant factors are revealed when you turn on the tape and see if the athlete is quick in short space, how well he uses his hands to break jams, how well he uses his feet on his releases. Perhaps the most important thing that separates one receiver from the next is how they get out of their breaks and how efficient their rounds are. 40 time is hardly a factor when you look at all of the variables that go into making a good receiver.

I don't think they intentionally fudge it. Hand time is just really inconsistent and the laser is maybe 2 tenths slower.

When hand timing they usually have two people timing each run and they go with the faster time of the two. Why would camps not give a kid who runs a consistent 4.6 a 4.5 and make them feel good. They want more clientele too.
