Of course you wouldn't recruit an athlete who runs a 6.8 40; however, a 4.7 isn't a determinant that a receiver is slow or can't get open.

The more determinant factors are revealed when you turn on the tape and see if the athlete is quick in short space, how well he uses his hands to break jams, how well he uses his feet on his releases. Perhaps the most important thing that separates one receiver from the next is how they get out of their breaks and how efficient their rounds are. 40 time is hardly a factor when you look at all of the variables that go into making a good receiver.

To be fair, most kids who are "clocked" now-days at at 4.2, 4.3, 4.4 are all done so by hand and it's wildly inaccurate. The same kids when timed with a laser end up in the 4.6-4.7 range, which is still considered NFL-type speed. Remember when everyone was going nuts years ago because Vance Cuff was timed at 4.2 and Cornelius Washington was 270 lbs and timed at 4.35? Yeah, hand timed. Washington was clocked around 4.6 at the combine (still freakishly fast for a dude that size).

I knew there was fudging when I played....didn't know (But I should have) that it still went on as prevelantly as it apprently does. Good to know. Years ago we used to add 2 tenths of a second to most times. Apprently we still should!

Crispy nailed it. 4.5 40 time is still insanely fast. A lot of ppl over hype 40 times hence why ppl these days think that every kid runs a sub 4.4. Truth is there are probably only a dozen to two dozen kids in college that can run sub 4.4. Take Gurley for instance, guy is probably in that 4.44-4.52 range. But that is still fast, especially for a 230 lb guy. Shuttle times really matter more in football imo.

Certainly, if the kid has all the other factors, speed can be somewhat overlooked. I guess I am a bit spoiled by having a a kid blow past a CB or S for a long TD.

However, if the kid is average or below average in speed, he BETTER have all the other intangibles. Hands and speed are two of the more important aspects of receiving. And I will give a kid a few extra points if he can actually block.

I agree if we are talking about front 7 on defense or OL...not sure about defensive backs and WRs, though.

I don't think they intentionally fudge it. Hand time is just really inconsistent and the laser is maybe 2 tenths slower.

When hand timing they usually have two people timing each run and they go with the faster time of the two. Why would camps not give a kid who runs a consistent 4.6 a 4.5 and make them feel good. They want more clientele too.

Camps may not...but coaches do. They fudge on times and weight....size.

Let's get back on track....

Looks like D'andre Walker is down between being a VFL or a Dawg.

Yes! DEFINITELY running backs. I always felt that coaches that discourage their kids from wrestling were making a HUGE mistake. Wrestling keeps kids in tip top shape, helps with strength and quickness. The two sports fit well together, but I have seen some coaches discourage their kdis from wrestlig. Crazy, IMO.

ETA

CRAP! I took us off rcruiting again. We should be talking about individuals. My bad.

Is he a NSD decision? We need this dude on board. He's a future first rounder IMO

Potentially the Army game.

Both UGA and UT staffs think they're the top 2. He's planning to OV at UGA in January. He already used his UT OV. None of the HCs have used their in-home, which indicates that they don't think it'll be over even if he commits at the Army game.

Does anyone have any news about Jefferson other than Bobo was the last to visit him?

Speaking of..just saw where he said it's too close to call between UGA and OM. Smh kids these days. I'm going to assume that's where our interest in Cager has come from. Contingency in case Van flakes out to OM.

BS put out by Rivals, IMO. This is the time of year when paysites put out all this "it's really close, guys!!!!" BS about a number of recruits to gin up excitement for NSD which means more subscriptions. Dead period always signals the beginning of this shitshow. Start taking what the pay guys put out with a grain of salt.

Cager

I read where Cager and Jefferson are really good friends and it was Jefferson recruiting Cager to UGA. That doesn't sound like a guy that will flip..

Or maybe he is flipping and knows there will be an open spot for Cager?
