Kind of ridiculous to even compare the two. Waltz was one of the finest acting jobs I've ever seen. Pitt totally phoned it in. It's fine because of who his character was, mostly comic relief, but he wasn't even trying. There are even times when you can totally tell he's reading from a cue card

Wu Tang Clan: 100% Asian got me loling when I first saw that. Their asian culture obsession is weird when you think about it!
On the subject of Wu Tang, I was jamming their stuff the other day for the first time in forever and DAMN they were good. What happened to rap?! Nobody popular in the rap game has real skill anymore. I shouldn't say this on a board so heavily trafficked by people from Louisiana, but Lil Wayne and guys like him and Drake with no flow suck and are just embarrassing compared to Biggie and Wu Tang from back in the day.

All I meant was that I enjoyed Waltz in Basterds more than any other actor, including Pitt. Not trying to compare the two or anything

Oh I did that thing where I responded to you talking about someone else. My bad

It's all good
And to be quite honest, I really enjoyed Pitt's hammed up role in the film.
Waltz just grabbed my attention (and everyone else's, apparently) with a sparkling performance that the general public wasn't expecting.

Yeah to Pitt it was all a joke. He had a bit part anyway - Diane Kruger had a more important role than he did even if hers didn't add up to as much screen-time (it may have, I don't know).
Waltz's performance rocked the faces off of people who aren't even into film and don't give it a shite about acting. He was that good. He transcended the medium. He clearly took it serious as a heart attack. And if you have to categorize it, it was actually a comedic role, which is frickING CRAZY.

Exactly!

And I don't know if he was aiming for this, but the really SCARY thing about that role was how perfectly it portrayed the banality of evil. That's the most disturbing thing about the Nazis, really. Not only did they systematically execute millions, force millions into slave labor, and attempt to conquer the world, but aside from Goring, who was flamboyant, and Goebbels, who looked like a Satanic rat and had a history of obsessive, violent anti-semitism, they did all that while looking and acting totally "meh". Hitler was a vegetarian watercolor painter with a soft-spot for dogs. Had Germany won WWI or had he been accepted as an art student, he'd have been a complete nobody. Waltz's character isn't just educated, he's erudite and refined. He'd be welcome anywhere as a handsome fellow, fine conversationalist and mannerly, composed gentleman. But actually he's a state-sponsored serial killer.

That's the things that's unnerving, really. Just goes to show how simple it is for otherwise upstanding normal citizens to be pushed in a dangerous line of thinking. I hope the world never forgets the evil that can come of that thanks to the horrible Nazianz example. Not saying they were the first and definitely not the last capable of such atrocities, but certainly the most infamous.
And of course, Waltz portrayed that to a T. That's just terrific acting. Not many can pull that off, IMO.

I'm half black (father is white, mother is black) and all I can tell you is that QT is far more intellectual than he's given credit for

I'm half Oklahoma and half Louisiana. I work in an office and have to fight random compulsions to run out, de-shirt, hop on an ATV and ride off to the country to grow a mullet and hunt nutria.
