At what point do you change your mind? What gets you back on board? If we beat MSU and Auburn, are you back on board? (I think we're more likely to lose both of those games than win both of them...I'm just asking.)

He needs to win out for me. SEC is pretty bad this year, but the defensive improvement is great to see. He also needs to put a LOT more effort into recruiting star defensive players. Tired of hearing about the next 5* WR, when the 5* LB is one of the main reasons the defense has begun to turn around.

Losing out on CB's, LB's, and DE's simply has to stop. I still think Auburn is going to abuse our secondary because the CB's just aren't all that great. LB is improving, but depth is terrible.

Who would dare take a job here if we did that?

If he goes 9-3 with a loss to either LSU or Auburn, he should get 1 more year.

State is a must win. Ole Miss is a must win. Auburn and LSU is a must split or win both.

Losing to the Sand Aggies would be pretty bad. ETA: Nvm we play the Lobos, not the Sand Aggies.

I'm sorry, what does back on board mean? I didnt mean fire him, i just said it still wouldnt magically restore my faith in his ability to coach year in and year out in the SECW.

ETA: The players didnt lose the UCLA game, Coaches did.

Yeah I wasn't reading this as a fire/extend post.

Back on board? probably can't do it this year, even at 10-2 I will have major doubts about him going forward.

Keep and hollow extension: 9-3, so long as the loss is to auburn.

9-3 and loss to miss st or LSU, 50-50.

9-3 and loss to ole miss, New Mexico, or 8-4: I want to make a move.

No matter the outcome you should never trust a player or coach that only exceeds expectations in "contract" years.

My bad then. I interpreted bye Felicia as fire him.

He'd need 3 straight 10+ win regular seasons for me.

He won't convince me this year. 9 or more wins this year and then 10 or more next year would have me reconsidering though.

I don't want to defend Sumlin but that is a problem bigger than Sumlin. 5* defensive players are the glue that holds together the caste system of college football. I wouldn't expect any A&M coach to do better unless they came to the campus with a huge reputation already (like if we got a Chip Kelly or someone at that level).

What I do blame Sumlin for is mismanaging QBs, having an overall soft team that falls apart at the end of the season, and the fact he can't win any major home games. Beating Auburn, not fricking up Mond, and beating LSU would do a lot to get me back onboard.

I think he's a mediocre coach. He has the potential to trend better, but has frittered away his post-manziel opportunities to take the next step, often spectacularly.

What I want from him this season (since my wishes that he'd get fired after last season or after the UCLA game didn't come true) is that the team get markedly better down the stretch instead of crumbling like they typically do under his watch. If he successfully runs the State/Auburn/LSU gauntlet, you keep him around to see if he can build on it next year. There's not a clear cut homerun hire out there IMO.

Les Miles (2010-2012)
Urban Meyer (2012-present)
Craig Bohl (2011-2013)
Chip Kelly (2009-2012)
Brian Kelly (2001-2003, 2007-2009)
Chris Petersen (2006-2012)
Dabo Swinney (2011-2013, 2015-present)
Gary Patterson (2009-2011)
Bill Snyder (1997-2000)
Paul Johnson (1997-2001)

Kevin Sumlin would literally have to put together three or more 10+ win regular seasons in a row to overcome my perception of him.

You should also add not getting upset by inferior teams (MSU and Ole Miss).

What about 9 wins this year, 9 or 10 next year, and an SEC West Division title in 2019?

I'd say that's the bar he needs to set for himself. That or find a new job.

No. 9 wins would have been ok without the epic choke job to a UCLA team that may lose out the rest of the season and go 4-8.

UCLA is 4-3 now. They have at least 3 more losses (at Washington, at Utah, at USC) and could lose to Arizona State and Cal as well.

I was at that game. I had to walk through Pasadena getting heckled. I had to spend my entire Labor Day traveling home. If I can forgive that game and move on (so long as it NEVER happens again) then you can too.
