So how many kids do we have in the portal now?

Also, serious question, do we have the most to leave via portal ever or are there other schools that have had it worse?

I believe these numbers are pretty close off the top of my head. 25 in portal, 3 leaving early for draft, 13 seniors out of eligibility = 41 and counting from 22 roster.

I forgive Jimbo for the early draft losses. But how can this loss of players be explained away? Sure you lose some but which program in the nation wins the prize for the most numbers of players lost to the portal? Seems like something is wrong. No?

A lot of the players ran afoul of the law. That’s a piece for some notables but we’ve certainly lost depth. This may wind up being nothing but we have to attract people in from the portal and I’m not hearing a lot on that.

Well it's best to discuss that in a couple of weeks. Did Saban achieve what he set out to do last year? Which team is lined up with the #1 recruiting class this year?

Freshman CB Marquis Groves Killebrew in the portal

Defense depth is getting decimated by the portal.

The big problem w/losing the depth is the issue of Jimbo offense being difficult to pick up. Unless we get an OC who can quickly streamline things to the point that first year guys can be relied on to run it we are already looking at another season that can fall apart very quickly w/just a few injuries to our starters.

Simplification is going to be the biggest deal. With early draft losses and the portal, you need a system that guys can pick up quickly. Let good athletes do what they do. That was Leach's genius. And Phi Slamma Jamma. It is part of why Kliff had quick success (having JM didn't hurt).

It's also why Kliff isn't special in the NFL. Having more time with more talent negates the benefit of simplicity.

But take OL as an example. If a guy isn't big enough until he is a sophomore and leaves when he's a senior, you only get a max of 26 games from him (ok, max max of 30). Better not waste any on complication.

So Haynes, Chase Lane, and Andre White all supposedly going to Georgia Tech. PJ Williams supposedly almost a lock to SMU.

Interesting so far, I’m sure we will have a few guys like Denver Harris end up at good schools, but it will be telling if a bunch of our guys end up at low P5 schools or worse. Still isn’t good to be losing the depth, but at least it means we likely aren’t losing too much talent.

Side note, Tyree Wilson transferred from us to Tech a few years ago and after having a really good season is projected to be a first or second round pick. I think he got buried on the chart/tired of waiting behind other guys so I get it but would’ve been nice to still have on the roster in our admittedly deep, d-line rotation.

Re: Tyree Wilson. One of the few instances when the transfer portal works out for a decent athlete. He was one in a crowd with many more coming behind him while at A&M. At Tech, he got the spotlight and made the most of it. That's great. It also helps to match the position with the playcalling/scheme. In Big 12 with more passing attacks, a D with aggressive pass rushing that hopes to get home to disrupt the passer is a feast/famine scheme and lucky for Wilson, he looks to have feasted. Wilson was too light in Elko's heavy D where even Leal was lining on the outside.

One can only hope that A&M can end up with a decent transfer or two at some need positions (LB? CB? OT? WR?).

Don't know much about White, but Haynes and Chase both seem like great kids. I wish them nothing but the best.

Personally I’ll be rooting for Georgia Tech this season as kind of a 2nd team. I wanna see those guys succeed

Will Haynes King be the next Nick Starkel?

I'm curious as to what kind of offense Brent Key is going to run. If Haynes is the QB, it needs to be read option and no more than 3 reads on passing plays. He has a tendency to seemingly go through his progressions twice before taking a sack. And maybe he can coach that horrible wind-up out of him. Baseball pitchers have a quicker release than King.

Haynes as a read option QB would be a disaster. He'd need a much better regimen of PEDs to be able to withstand the beating he would take

They could probably bulk him up a little without the 'roids. He only needs about 15 lbs.
