When do you plan on getting to columbia? Any questions about things to do, places to eat?

I think 3andOut is the only one that swings that way and I'm pretty sure it's repressed.

ETA: sorry just read the subject and not all of the post.

My family and I will be getting there just in time for Midnight Yell. On top of the game, it is my younger brother's unnofficial (I'm only non-mormon in family) bachelor party. We plan on staying 4-ish days.

I'd greatly appreciate advice on: Golf, food, and PG (lame) entertainment lol.

First week of classes, so I have to stick around in order to distribute tree-killing syllabi (for the dummies who didn't print it before coming to my class) and answer 20 ridiculous questions re: how many absences they can have without their grades being affected.

Important higher-ed tasks, ya know?

Alas, I'll be taking advantage of the DirecTV option on Thursday.

I haven't had a chance to play golf here since college. There are a couple of good courses around though, I'm sure some other folks can chime in.

PG entertainment...well are we talking young kids, teenagers? Little kids would like edventure at the state museum off huger street. Riverbanks zoo is always fun.

Tin roof usually has live music off of senate street in the vista at night. Good crowds lots of coed talent

Food;

A good local Italian place is called villa tronco down off of Main Street

BBQ: downtown you can do palmetto pig or docs. Whole hog buffet with sauce choices of mustard or vinegar

Burgers: pawleys front porch in 5 points.

Blue marlin, oyster bar and pearls for decent seafood.
Motor supply in the vista is a nice place for a sit down meal. They change their menu daily and post it online.

Henry's on Devine is a cool spot for drinks and burgers as well.

Flying saucer and world of beer have lots of good crafts on draft. River rat brewery is a local place that brews their own stuff

Salty nut is a good hangout spot and always has a good crowd.

Nightcaps and bar none if you're out past 2am and you're looking for a place where the road goes on forever and the party never ends

EtA: if you are out in 5 points real late stay in groups. There have been some issues with violent crime. Hopefully the cops will make their presence felt since it will be a big crowd that night. Columbia is a metro area and is not a small college town.

The old fart contingent will be arriving Wednesday. Me Wednesday night, SafetySam and his father I think early Wednesday, maybe Tuesday night. We're bringing along a much younger '80 guy out of sympathy for the young folks.

Recommendations are certainly welcome. SafetySam managed to get BBQ recommendations earlier, but we're open to suggestion. Looking forward to the trip!

ETA: Kudos to you for being a good host and offering.

The state museum and the statehouse grounds are pretty cool if you're into history and whatnot.

Here is a picture of the monument to the palmetto regiment of the Mexican War. Their regimental flag was the first to fly over Mexico City during the war

You can also tour inside the statehouse and see some original art depicting revolutionary battles, civil war battles etc.

Flying into Charlotte tomorrow afternoon, In Asheville on Tues night then on to Columbia. Staying at the Courtyard Mariott. Taking niece (Soph at SC) to dinner on Wed night so I assume she knows where to go. Just in case, how about a few suggestions for seafood or BBQ?

Really interested in where to go during the afternoon on Thursday. Odd day of the week but a cool place to catch some ESPN and have a few drinks would be nice. Heard the people and the fans are great. Really Looking forward to the trip.

What would you

Thanks much! SafetySam was a History major (plus German - don't ask me, didn't make sense to me, either) so he'll eat that shite up. I'm glad we have most of the day to do this sort of thing. Really looking forward to it. My only experience with Columbia after 57 years is driving through it. This will be a damn good trip.

Btw I'm a Carolina grad. My dad is an Arkansas grad. I was born in little rock and still laugh because my dad has this poster hanging in his den.

Salty nut and thirsty fellow are good spots for day drinking. World of beers too. I you're going to the game though I would suggest getting down there no later than 3 to avoid traffic. There is a decent bar near the stadium called the loose cockaboose where you can drink but you can probably fin dolls to shoot the shite with at tailgate

Youngest will be the groom lol. However I'm the only one that drinks and I don't plan on taking in the bar scene without them .

Thanks for the suggestions!

If you're out late do not drink and drive. Operation back to school is in effect and law enforcement will bust your arse. If you are with underage drinkers downtown, SLED (South Carolina law enforcement division) will have plain clothes cops in and around bars

Parking meters do not run on Sundays and bars don't care if the car stays till Sunday

Also, check out the horseshoe. It's the original campus and was one of the only spots that didn't get burned during Sherman's march.

Good info. Heard about Thirsty Fellow from someone that used to live there. They said it was great place to go at night and catch a game on TV.

Appreciate the heads up on the traffic. Surely it can't be as bad as Arkansas after the game can it?? That was a nightmare last year.
