Even as a Galvestonian, I feel comfortable in saying that it's time for the San Mexicans to clean up their river.
It really is a "dirty little creek," like Charles Barkeley says.
And yet folks are still duped into spending all their hard-earned cash along it. Crazy

It can be fun. The spirit of Dick's Last Resort suits me well.
My negative attitude towards the area just comes from being stuck down there for conventions with no regular priced restaurants, drug stores or convenience stores anywhere close.

Go outside the tourist trap areas and SA is a great town. Fiesta Texas/Sea World are awesome kid venues. I will second La Margarita's greatness, I think it was the first restaurant to put fajitas on the menu. Love the whole Farmer's Market. The Riverwalk/downtown is nice but very touristy. Some crap and overpriced restaurants there if you aren't careful.
I love going to local places like El Chapparal in Leon Valley. Very authentic and family run. Great and HUGE margaritas. Amazing fajitas. They serve you a little bean soup appetizer before your meal that is fantastic. So many places like that. Another reliable favorite of mine is Alamo Cafe off Bitters and 281, they have the best tortillas I have ever eaten and it isn't close. Has a cool little fountain stream that runs though the restaurant and its got fast service and very reasonable prices.
Some really gorgeous hill country hotels out in the La Cantera area. Great golf courses as well and the outdoor shopping mall is nice.
It is also home of my favorite drunk food chain place of all time, Las Palapas. A Carne Guisada with Bean and Cheese Burrito is just heaven when you are loaded.
