Will pose the question and give my opinion later.
Who wins in a hypothetical game between the '98 squad and the 2012 squad?

Depends on if it's early Johnny or late season Johnny
Florida and LSU do not beat johnny late in the year in 2012

2012, by the end of the year they were the best team in the country.

I fully agree with this.

We would have throttled ND in the title game had we won either the Florida or LSU games.

This. No question.

I think Hill is still running.

You forget a few things about the 1998 team:
1. How putrid the offense was.
2. Russell Bynum couldn't hit anything from beyond 40 yards.
3. The fact that we needed complete brain farts from the other team to beat Kansas (ball bouncing off a player's head on a punt), Missouri (another muffed punt deep in their territory), and Kansas State (epic 4th quarter collapse and a nickel badly out of position on the Parker TD)
4. Mike Hankwitz PREVENT defense late in games.

I think the 2012 team would win as well. But it would be very close. The 98 team was built to run. Featuring Dante Hall and Jamar Toombs. Behind a decent offensive line. That was the weakness for the 2012 team. The 98 defense would have done pretty well against the 2012 offense. Defensive line of Bernard Edwards and Fleming would have plugged up the line pretty well. Linebackers Anthony, Holdman, Bradley and Nguyen are very good. That team also had a never die mentality and put themselves into position to make the most of the other team's mistakes.
Of course Johnny was other worldly and the 2012 defense was definitely good enough to stall the 98 offense. I think it would be an outstanding game. Probably along the lines of the 2012 LSU game with the 2012 Ags coming out on top.
ETA as far as kickers go, The place kickers is a wash at best for 2012. I mean that was the year of Bert derps. The punter was definitely a win for 98. That was still Shane Lechler.

2012
1998 was a plucky squad with luck. 2012 was a juggernaut from midesason on with a transcendent QB and a team mojo/chemistry that was off the charts. They embarrassed OU so badly that they had a hangover for a couple of years.
