His last 2 stops, he's taken over bad offenses and made then good immediately. However good looks to be the ceiling. 2013 was his only borderline elite offense. After he left ASU Mike Norvell took his offense and made it even better. Norvell is now HC at Memphis.

It is flat out ridiculous how quickly Meacham & Co took TCU's O from pedestrian to elite. But looking at his job at UH, it was nothing special. I'm not sure about the personal at the time maybe that had something to do with it. The issue I have with Meacham is that he hasn't done it against good defenses consistently & only has 3 years of being an OC. Is he a product of Boykin like McKinney was a product of Manziel?

There really aren't any proven OCs out there in the wind right now so I hope what we wished for doesn't come back to bite us.

This. There just isn't an OC with proven SEC success available. And I don't think a Power 5 head coach is going to take an assistant job.
There could be a FCS head coach out there who would. But people would be saying he's worse than Mazzone, a nobody, etc.
So who is left? At best, a man with OC experience coming out of the Big12, Pac12 or ACC.
We don't know if Mazzone or Meacham is the answer. But its not like there is some obvious choice, either.

Compare it to the DC search. We didn't frick around. We IDed the top guys (Durkin, Foster, Boom, & Chavis) and went out and hired one of them. We should expect to take a solid OC from a "lesser" or equal program. We shouldn't settle for anyone in the FCS or someone without a job.

It won't. Trust me, we might get someone better or about the same, but it would be next to impossible to get someone worse than spavital. There may not be a whole lot of "big" names available but even giving an unproven up and comer is better than watching our offense littered with 4 and 5 star talent score two offensive touchdowns in 4 or 5 sec games, whatever the stat was

Those are awesome visual aids, thanks Farmer

Nice charts.
But at this point, I would take any coordinator whose playbook is bigger than a 5x7 notecard and has play formations that include a QB under center...it's been a long time since we've attempted to muscle the ball into the endzone with an i-formation.

Since the "poach a coach from a big name school" crowd haven't offered any specific names for OC that I'm aware of, I'll get the ball rolling.
There's Rhett Lashley at Auburn. Auburn is certainly creative on offense. He has SEC experience. But Auburn isn't exactly setting the woods on fire in the QB development department. That's something that might be pretty important for our new OC given where we are at QB.
But the bigger hurdle is he and Malzahn seem joined at the hip like Siamese twins. Where Gus has been, Rhett has shadowed him. It is hard to tell how much of Auburn's creativity is due to him, as opposed to Gus, anyway.
I doubt he would make a lateral move from one tenuous situation to another.

We did go under center a few times last year in that so called rhino formation. I don't think we ever got a first down from it and seemed to throw it out of the playbook (note cards) this year.

according to this, why isn't McKinney our OC?

Valid question. I remember when Sumlin announced Spavital was going to call plays for the Chick Fil A Bowl in '13, I was happy because I was upset with McKinney during the year. But his stats on paper look really good (of course, as previously mentioned, he did have the GOAT at QB)

Because he took a loaded offense and made it worse. If the season plays out the same with that terrible defense and Kliff is the OC, I would bet we average 50 PPG.

And by golly Hyman was forced out because Sumlin didn't like him
So today is Meachams day to step forward right? Or Stitt or Mazzone, but probably Meacham

Before that he killed it at the Div II level.
Eddie Gram - Cincy
