Just asked God to give you the strength and wisdom to know the right thing to do in this situation and do it.

Sorry to hear, man. That’s a very difficult situation.

Hang in there bud. Just know if that’s the step you need to take, it’s for the right reasons. Independence is a hard thing to give up, and that conversation is even harder. I saw my parents go through it with their parents the last decade or so.

I had a friend go through this recently. I guess the one good thing about my parent’s dying early is I didn’t have to deal with this. There comes a time that you have to make the right decision for your parents

Amigo, that is terrible.

With no more info than you have provided, don't count on having him declared non compos mentis. Sounds like he is in poor shape physically, but you don't say anything about his control of mental faculties. Refusing to go to assisted living is not enough (alone) to have someone declared NCM.

If you pull that trigger and lose, the relationship may be damaged beyond repair. Be deliberate.

STDs run rampant in nursing homes. Some of those geezers are slaying it.

Said a prayer for you and your dad

Hank is offering good counsel, if you swing and miss on taking away his right to make decisions about his life, it could do very serious damage to your relationship or end it

My wife was faced with this when her dad fell and broke a hip. He never recovered the ability to walk. She chose a very nice assisted living facility. She got pushback and was the bad guy and unfortunately or fortunately was an only child so she made the decision. In the end he could not have taken care of himself, by himself. And finally, just about two years into it at 90, he was diagnosed with late onset moderate Alzheimers. And within two years had lost most of his memory and certainly his short term memory. But he gave my wife hell for a few months because he wanted "to go home". My son's in-laws are going through the same thing with an elderly mom and dad.

well, my dad seems to have taken a turn for the better

It looks like we will at the very minimum get someone for in home care, but I'd still feel better if he were at an independent living facility that could offer assisted living if need be. But steps in the positive direction are always welcome.
