Leaving the game Saturday, you would the Vol fans would have been heard talking about the blow opportunities, the mental mistakes their team made, how "lucky" we were or just sulking in silence. However, I heard almost none of that. What I did hear, both in conversations I had and overheard, was how dirty Gillaspia was and how they hated him and even some wished injury on him.

Looking the Vol boards the last two days, I see much of the same. Two days after their top 10 team lost one of the craziest and most exciting football games of the year and one of the biggest topics of conversation is white former walk on special teams player with goofy hair.

Dude forced a fumble, enticed a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty, had Butch at midfield screaming on two seperate occasions and on at least two kickoffs had multiple Vols abandon their blocking assignments to take shots at him.

Strong work Gilly, strong work

Their entire basis for him being "dirty" is that he blew a non-defenseless receiver the **** up. There's nothing else even potentially "dirty" that he did. What he DID do, by blowing that guy the **** up, is rustle them so bad that they decided to get dirty with HIM. That great decision resulted in
1. Them blowing their assignments to try to hit him
2. Two of them getting unsportsmanlike for throwing him out of bounds
3. An ejection on Warrior for targeting him.

All hail Cullen.

#VolTwitter is so mad. And ignorant. I've seen a ton of them livid at the refs for not calling targeting when their players kept having to be carted off the field to go through concussion protocol.

Know the rules, or STFU

Precisely. It's amazing.

One does not simply waltz into KYLE MOTHERfrickING FIELD and expect not to get his clock cleaned by the 12th Man

I love how they think FORD should have been flagged for targeting. LOLOLOLOLOL Show me one time that a running back has been flagged for "targeting" his would-be tackler. Tennessee fans are a bunch of wankers.

It is hard for me to even fathom how mad they are. VolTwitter is one of the worst out there anyway, but he has just poured a tanker worth of gasoline all over them...

Butch actually officially sent in a request for review on his hit. Nevermind the returner wasn't defenseless, and Gillaspia was still being engaged by a Vol blocker lololol.

They also seem to think their open season on him the rest of the game was only the right thing to do, but shouldn't have been illegal.

Just perfect.

He is a little shite for waving goodbye, but I love it and he has produced the best .gif in rustling history.

I guess he is just trying to get good PR with his fanbase. Otherwise, a head coach should damn well know that a return man who has taken possession of the ball is not a defenseless player, by rule.

Me too. Has anyone been successful in getting them to answer or even address the question: "Cite one example of a RB ever being flagged for targeting on his tackler"

I'm not saying it was targeting, that I've even watched the replay, or I've ever seen it called in such situations, but you guys arguing that it wasn't a defenseless player don't know the rule. There's 2 parts to targeting and only one involves a defenseless player. The other involves using the crown of the helmet, and doesn't matter if the player is defenseless or not.

quote:

Targeting and Making Forcible Contact With the Crown of the Helmet
ARTICLE 3. No player shall target and make forcible contact against an opponent with the crown (top) of his helmet. When in question, it is a foul.(Rule 9-6) (A.R. 9-1-3-I)

Targeting and Making Forcible Contact to Head or Neck Area of a Defenseless Player
ARTICLE 4. No player shall target and make forcible contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulder. When in question, it is a foul (Rules 2-27-14 and 9-6). (A.R. 9-1-
4-I-VI)

But they say nothing about their player blowing up the ref? I haven't seen so many refs knocked down in a game before. All by tennessee players or them pushing aggies into them.

It still requires intent.

Since he was still being engaged by a blocker and not in full control, it's impossible to make an argument that he was "targeting" berry's head. It's not like he was playing the wind with his 7 iron, and could anticipate and adjust based on where the blocker would push him. He wouldn't have time. It would be the equivalent of adjusting for the wind if it started on your back swing.

Also had Berry not crouched for the impact as well, Gillaspia wouldn't have hit his facemask at all. He would have gotten a facemask to his sternum and the ball and still fumbled most likely. Berry didn't do this intentionally either, but was surprised whenever CG was blocked into his immediate path.

You would have trouble convincing me CG was even being negligent, much less had intent.
