Fortunately, in A&M & Koda's case, the response was described as

"Thanks for the prayers! Koda is coming home! Monday he had a heat stroke at practice. The trainers took his temp. It was 106. They immediately got him into an ice tub to reduce his temp and called an ambulance. They likely saved his life. His organs had begun to shut down. His vitals weren’t good. Once in the ambulance he received a cold IV which helped reduce his temperature."

And not:

"Despite exhibiting multiple symptoms consistent with heatstroke, it would be an hour and seven minutes before Maryland training staff called 911 and an additional half hour before McNair was admitted into a local hospital."

I think that the response is part of the difference. But more important is the overlying culture.

I was talking with others today who played in the 80s, at A&M and elsewhere. Im pretty sure our now "Icon" (particularly HS) coaches would be fired. Something like Junction would result in jail time.

Accidents happen, just like on work jobsites. but what ends up meaning something is the culture. Does this feel like a one-off from a kid working hard like Martin, or does it feel like 1980's 3 a days in Tx with a snow cone cup of ice chips if you worked hard enough to earn it?

From what I read, Durkin feels like the latter. But that is FROM WHAT I READ.

I surely dont have enough info to play jury. Jimbo gets paid a pile of cash. He can do that.

I'm sure Nuno, Buchanan and Xin Pubes will spin it tomorrow that there's nothing wrong with Durkin.

There’s nothing wrong with Durkin. You’re the one spinning.

Unless this board is gonna turn into a miserable hate fest, we’re going to have to agree to disagree and move on.

If it was a done deal, it almost certainly would have been announced by now

42nd in S&P+ up from 80th last year. They'll probably move higher after the factor in the Sugar Bowl.

Don't understand the Durkin hate. I think some of us are more worried about what the media is going to say about us than how culpable the man was for a horrible tragedy. If he's vetted by Texas A&M and Jimbo wants him - get him. Everyone deserves a second chance. Grow thicker skin.

The stuff that came out of the investigation painted him as a real piece of shite. Maybe he's grown up, maybe he hasn't, from the outside it's really hard to know.

Some people, including myself, think we can do better than bringing in a guy like that. And just because Jimbo signs off on it doesn't make it ok, he's not an infallible judge of character. He's going to do what he feels is best for the program and what he feels is necessary to meet the expectations placed upon him, but thay doesn't make every decision of his the right one, or one we have to support.

So I’m guessing

Durkin - Co-DC/LBs
Price - DE
Robinson - DL
Santucci - Co-DC/Safeties
Rushing - CB

My guess:

Santucci - Co-DC/LBs
Price - DE
Robinson - DL
Rushing - DBs
Durkin - C0-DC, no position specified

I don't mean this as part of an argument. I simply offer this as data for your consideration.

This is a post from a Maryland fan on reddit:

quote:

There's a reason he wasn't fired with cause.

LINK

"After Dr. Walters provided his preliminary report in late July, suggesting that the training staff bore some responsibility for the tragedy, Mr. Durkin urged Mr. Evans to retain a new training staff before August practices began, to ensure the safety of the players."

"[Mr. Durkin] states that he repeatedly requested that a physician be assigned to cover every football practice, and Mr. Anderson has confirmed that Mr. Durkin made this request"

"In interviews with the Commission, Mr. Durkin expressed frustration with the level of support, and the lack of communication, he received from Athletics. He was particularly upset when UMD reorganized the doctors providing care to the football players. Mr. Durkin felt that one physician, who had treated football players for several years, was trusted by the players. This physician was removed from her position without prior notice to, let alone input from, Mr. Durkin."

These do not seem like the actions of a raving lunatic. He is not an old-school no water football guy. He spoke at Jordan's funeral.

But what about the players walking out?

quote:

There was a big split in the players that were holdovers from the previous staff and the ones he recruited. Same reason Tyrell Pigrome and Chance Campbell transferred to Ole Miss. Antoine Brooks family and Wade Lees defended Durkin. JC Jackson literally said "just being around Coach Durkin, he just taught me to be a man".

There was an extremely nasty war of public opinion waged by the lawyer because of the horrible communication to the parents of Jordan McNair from the school and the ****ed up Athletic department about the reasons why Jordan died. Durkin was the most recognizable person in the incident and that's who they went after. The corresponding story in ESPN had zero to do with Wes Robinson and Nordwall's inability to treat heatstroke after a standard conditioning drill.
