If it comes out that we missed out on foster because of chavis, if he doesn't come, or because of assistants I think that will end up being a big mistake.

I'v been busy. Have we talking about this yet?

A source close to Chavis maintains Chavis wants to be paid as much or more than Muschamp next season, and Chavis may be getting a significant raise and a new contract from LSU soon.

Didn't LSU offer 4 million over 3 years?

For what it's worth, Liucci claims that's completely made up re: Pruitt

I believe that 100%. But it does show we lost control of the narrative. Now people can make up stories that we targeted X big name DC and its believable to the mob.

I have to admit I am a little jelly of Mizzou getting a great mid-major DC quickly, with little drama or fanfare. If we strike out on every big name they certainly will have made a better hire than us.

everyone wanted a big name or it was sumlin's arse. the guy can literally do nothing right

I'm confused as to why he hasn't utilized the media and the 9.95 reporters like he normally does in situations like this, but then again I'm not on the inside and I trust that he has a reason for doing so

maybe he knew all along that Malik was never going to commit to us? Why rush the DC hire for a kid that will look for any reason not to commit to the Ags? I have no clue and trust his judgment in recruiting matters as well as coaching hires

Billy has had great info over the years and I enjoy this site....but, this time, I just don't think he knows. A few days ago he posted something about "Sumlin making this a one man operation". Sumlin knows how important this hire is to his own career, why would he leak even a morsel that could endanger it?

I think for once, Billy is just sitting here with the rest of us, waiting and wondering.

Not quite. Not close, really. I've been on plenty of aspects of this search from the start. However, you are correct in that I don't know who the candidate other than Durkin is. That much is correct. I know where the contact has been but to say I know exactly who Sumlin has zeroed in on as his #1 would be untrue.

For what it's worth, this is what ESPN posted about our DC opening today.

Texas A&M defensive coordinator The names that have surfaced in the past month or so were Florida’s D.J. Durkin and Virginia Tech veteran Bud Foster. Unfortunately for A&M, Foster signed a 5-year extension. At different points, Will Muschamp, Brent Venables, John Chavis and even Bo Pelini were considered by Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin, I’ve been told by those familiar with the search. But all signs point to Durkin. If the 36-year-old weren’t serving as Florida’s interim head coach, this deal might already be done. Sumlin made a reference to “the timing of the person” in a news conference last week. The good news is the new DC will inherit budding star Myles Garrett. The bad news is the collective unit finished the past two seasons 103rd in the country in yards per play (6.13). There’s talent, but also work to be done. Those close to the A&M program recognize this very well could be the make-or-break hire for Sumlin.

People wanted Boom. He kinda created this "go big or go home" environment.

I am not going to criticize Sumlin's process. So many fans love the "make him say no" attitude in theory, it seems hypocritical to not be able to take the results of that theory when the rubber meets the road. We don't know what is actually happening.

Facts are that a result of this search is that our hunt is high profile (as in a lot of people are paying attention) but there is VERY little concrete information which is creating a vacuum for the paysites to make up what they want. The only real criticism so far has nothing to do with recruiting or who the hire will be. The criticism is that for once Sumlin didn't get out in front and shape the message, which allows others to do it for him.

Why does the fact that he's interim HC matter? DeRuyter had a contract at Fresno when he coached in our bowl.

I have to wonder if Sumlin isn't letting a whole bunch of smoke pile up up because he just wants to hire Durkin (maybe he killed the interview) but knows the optics will be bad after losing out on his former boss and losing out on Jefferson/Mack.

Honestly, I think we have Durkin lined up to come here in some capacity either way. Either he's coaching a defensive unit or as a co-DC.

I think the stall is for a bigger name that might be interested or might come available and has expressed interest.

I don't buy that Durkin would come here as a position coach. Someone will give him a DC job, whether its UNC or another school.

Liucci update tonight:

- he says it will be either Durkin or Chavis
- he says we will have our man before the bowl game, but may not have an announcement until after

Which coincidentally enough is also after Harbaugh will be officially hired at Michigan and will have either retained Mattison, hired Durkin, or neither. I suspect Chavis rumors are just sunshine pumping and this is the real domino.
